VARSITY PUUTB LL Some people would say that the 1949 football sea- son was a flop. Other people would say that it was the worst season Hale ever had. These people would be wrong. The 1949 season brings up the old discussion of what makes a sucs cessful season. If one counts success by totaling Hale'5 victories, the season looks badg but if one judges the season by courage, scrappiness, and determination to win, Hale will stand out as a champion. The 1949 gridiron team was handicapped from the start by lack of size, depth, and experience. Even this did not stop the Huskies, and powerful Tosa will long remember how the Huskies led for three periods only to be beaten by their own injuries. Injuries the ghost that haunts a short-handed team came as they were bound to Almost from the first day of practice they appeared to hinder the team Then Hale met Cudahy and played them to a dead lock Altogether Hale won four ties That is a record to be proud of Bad season no Rather it was a good season a season that saw the Huskies live up to their name Coaches William Cullen and Edward Sacharski plan strategy Equipment manager Mr Woodward Kerr and stu dent managers Paul Harmueller Martin Krebs and Warren Adamson are shown checking 1949 equipment ard stocking it for the 1950 season SCORES For B sco auwato a 16 9 C dakv 13 13 eti h 12 26 Waukesha 13 41 S o ewood 2 S utn Mi waukee Milwaukee 2 SUBURBAN STANDINGS Team Whitefish B Cudahy Shorewood Wauwatosa Waukesha West Milwaukee South Milwaukee Central Hale Central Cudahy West Ivhlwaukee They knew what the score was' B Martm Krebs Charles Page Don Engel Lloyd RICE Rudy Mavroff Lyle Laufenberg Clyde Angelos Tom Cordre Dxck Boyle Verner Falk Herbert LeWCI1'1dOWSk1 11m Bloedom 49 Waukesha , .Vs,,..,,,.. 9 A A,.A,....,..,. 7 The 194950 basketball team started out hke a ball of hre wrnmng erght out of thexr txrst eleven games and weathered a late season slump to t1e tor flfth place rn the Suburban Conference standmgs The Huskxes won some heart pleasmg games and lost a Iew heart breakmg ones Among the thrxllers was the vrctory over our clty nval Central In the hrst of these two encounters the Huskres came from behrnd rn the last two mmutes to wm and knock Central out of a t1e for hrst place However the Huskxes lost a heart breaker to delendxng ChGmp1On Wauwatosa alter a turrous battle wh1ch saw the Huskres ahead by ten pomts at halt Another hard game to lose was the second encounter w1th Central The squad played therr hearts out and al though they lost they won the prarse of many spectators One of the hrghlxghts of the season was the trrp to Marrnette Wxsconsrn and Menommee M1ch1gan durmg the Chrrstrnas vacatlon The Huskres showed how pleased they were by defeatrng both schools rn thrrllmg close and sprrrted games Coach Sacharskt who served hrs second year as head coach d1d a note worthy Job and Hale students apprecxate thxs fact 50 VARSITY Elf ratlnq 15 Frank Galhna George Obradovtch Howre Thompson Gordre Hennum Gerry Gole Bob Barnes ""'S B SHETBALL hnoper 1 Bruce Letter Chooch Krayac Don Froehhch Butch Iorgenson Iohn Cookson Al Hemowsk1 Grandstand Lxneup Suburban Standmgs Washmgton Racme Park Wauwatosa Wauke ha Cudahy South Mxlwaukee Marmette 41 46 30 27 41 51 37 30 51 36 46 26 56 50 Team Wauwatosa West Mllwaukee West A1115 Central Whttehsh Bay Nathan Hale Waukesha Menommee Mxch 51 60 52 Shorewood South Mxlwaukee Cudahy Don Froehlxch Alex Grocholskx Bob Tewes Clyde Angelos Mr Cullen Pat Lange Dxck Koch Edward Fleldstadt Pat Levenhagen Wayne Hamxlton Pete Adams B TEAM BASKETBALL Ready for the hug tlme The Nathan Hale 1949 50 B Basketball Team got off to a slow start but as the team gamed confrdence rts percentage 1mproved stead1ly The fmal stand1ngs showed the team wxth a 500 average and the record of be1ng the only team to beat Tosa tw1ce The outstand1ng tea tures of Coach Cullens B squad were 1lS hne balance and h1gh sconng punch In the last e1ght games the team averaged 45 po1nts a game Coach Cullen should have a powerful squad return mg next year 11 those boys are selected for Vars1ty berths 52 l l I , , , A . . - I , . . , . . 1 . . . . . i EHUSS EUUNTHY They owe you a run for your money Duane Bluemke Ioe Cannestra Frank Pauc Eugene Tewes Ionn Balogh Mxke Carney Mxke Carney Mr Wrench Paul Oberneder I1m Otter Bob Barnes Terry Sweek Dan Steele Ioe Dobner Paul Kra1ac Davld Kohler Nell Thompson Dlck Wallschlaeger Wayne Mundrgler Howard Thomp son Frank Pauc Iack Love Don Bush Ioe Cannestra Don Dulane IIIH Bloedorn Drck Murdock Bob Iungck Vernon Iohnsorr Art Lebahn Mr Murdaugh 53 TENNIS Don Froehhch Just swinging along Rxchard Koch Alex Luewskr Robert Unke Gary Burton Ierome Kasza Bert CNe1ll Robert Bowman Bob Grohall Terry Allen Ralph Brosowsk1 'fs K ..q1i'7ff 54 .......-1, rig 2 I .. . , .
