NAPA UNION H15 H ScHooL gg Q EE E egg -ri" -'- Ac-' 'JE Illlil ISIIHD IH Illl, Sll Dlx 22'- VVS UF N-XIWX lllllll SCIIUHI. 1951 3 ,f XY --Y,,,,, , . , N MW 1'-"+"'54 1f'?-Q1 xwx. fi - 2'iQl. vf- g ffg f-f"",!--JK , v'-gif?" f , A ' 1' ' ' Q ' 'ki' Llf -:gf 'x,,fkiiif:,w1kfkvgQ A f 2 " 4 M71-X Y Y 4-vPx -" "" " K' 'tk' 2','Q4lV V . i W i i- " ,xfe in Yigriiw N 7- Y ziih 115, X Qi. ,, 1 Q' '5-'MRA HISTORY OF NAPA HIGH Napa I-hgh School as presently located on the 1ntersect1on of Lmcoln and Jefferson avenues, began back m the year 1921 as a recommenda t1on by a cornm1t oi school planmng experts du-ected by Frank W Hart In that study il.: recommended that a plant be planned to house as many as 500 st its as Napa was growlng ln enrollment totalhng at that t1me 389 sfuaflbiifis in the hrgh school, grades 9 through 12 As a result Napa I-hgh School was bu1lt and set up as a four year htgh school grades 9 12 thus replacmg the old h1gh school bu1ld1ng m use unt11 that tzme, the now famous lntermed1ate School Thus when th1s f1rst term In the year 1935 a f1re occurred durmg wh1ch the aud1tor1um and the north wmg of the butldxng were destroyed Vxlladsen Brothers of Oak land general contractors subsequently rebuxlt the h1gh school replac 1ng the burned out sect1ons and at the same t1me relnforcmg the plant completely for earthquake protecuon It was recommended 1n the year 1941 by F W Hart and L H Peterson natwnally known schoolhouse planmng experts that Napa Ifhgh School be organxzed as a four year school servmng grades, 7 8 9 a d 10 and that a new bulldmg be bullt adjacent to lt for housmg grades ll 12 and 13 14 Jumor college years Th1s then 1S consxdered the brrth date of our present 6 4 4 plan of educat1on Such a reorgamzed Junlor h1gh school was meant to accommodate an enrollment of as many as 1200 students The actual number of students 1n these grades at that t1me was 950 Because of the great xnflux of students due pr1rnar1ly to act1v1t1es connected to the second world war It was necessary to begm a double sess1on and to postpone bulldlng the proposed new college bu1ld1ng Dur1ng these years Napa I-hgh School acted as both h1gh school and col lege Th1s double sess1on lasted untll the year 1949 when Napa College opened 1ts new bu1ld1ng Rellef 1U Napa I-hgh was temporary however as famxhes contlnued to come to Napa Valley and tracts of new homes dotted the landscape As a result enrollments 1n all grades began to soar and Napa H1gh once agaln returned to the double sess1on 1n 1951 a cond1t1on whlch st1ll CX1StS The enrollment 1n the year 1953 now totalled 1904 and the end was not ln s1ght Temporary re11ef of thls cond1t1on 1S expected 1n the fall of 1954 when a new high school on the corner of Old Sonoma Road and the Free way w1ll be completed At that t1me the enrollmentwlll be sphtbetween the two schools, thus f1111ng each to xts capacity but at least endmg the double sess1on. Handicapped by lack of competitive experience other than that gained by many of the boys in sandlot ball and as graduates of the city Peanut League the starting nine was determined by hustle and drive No returning veterans were avail able as they had graduated to the varsity team The team members were restricted to ninth graders who were placed in their various positions as a result of daily practice and early season prac tice games with the neighboring towns Battling for the permanent assignment as receiver of the slants of the pitchers were Wheeler and Smith Hustling to obtain coach s permission to deliver the pitches were candidates for the chore of pitcher, Charlesworth Batchelder and Amundson. First base position was a personal struggle between Marshall and Bantz each very anxious to gain this berth on the squad Barbeau a capable key stone sacker enjoyed himself as he discovered little competition for his work at that p0SlIl0l'1. This was not true at the hot corner however, as two capable men Lloyd and Davidson, competed for the nod of Mr Hansen s head when the games were ordered begun. However, some of the newcomers are makrng excellent showrngs rn the early season meets Among the top spnnters rn the squad were two veterans Jerry Clpressr and Tom McCorm1ck New sprrnters who the coaches were relyrng heavrly on as pomt gatherers were Stanley Domezro Jerry Alarmo Mrke Blesstng Ray Gasser Bob No velly Drck Mltchell Darryl Carbone and Ron Wong Two promrstng hurdlers appeared to be Dale Parker and Ed Scalley Drck De Weese was sure to be a strong contender to retarn his crown as the l2 pound shot put champron. Dick set a new league record last season wrth a heave of 42 feet and 2 mches Ray Smrth and Bob Grrnsel were among the top contestants rn the hrgh Jump Bob Novelly appeared to be the Kntghts best hope of captunng the pole vault champronshrp Bob has already estabhshed a new class B record of 9 feet 9 rnches Other probable record breakers were Mrke Blessing Stanley Domezro and Ron Pearson Mrke seemed capable of betterrng the school s broad Jump record of 17 feet 8 rnches for the C s Stanley should be able to lower the '75 yard dash record of 8 5 seconds and Ron Pearson seemed ltkely to do great things rn the 1320 yard drstance run.
