JEAN GARDNER, Editor. Qreal Responsibililies For The Schools Of Todaq At no time in our history h a v e s o many important de- manids been made upon our schools as are being made to- day. i The abandonment of child labor and the great army of unemployed have caused hundreds of thousands of pupils between the ages of fourteen and twenty to return to the schools. The chaotic condition of our time, the problems of crime, unemployment, and many other perplexing social and civic problems of today have thrown upon the schools a great challenge in adult education. Through educational forums the schools may bring to the adults a more intelligent and sympathetic understanding of these problems. If our democracy is to continue we must have an en- lightened, serviceable, and aggressive citizenry. It is one of the main functions of our schools to bring this about. Are you laying the foundations for such a citizenship today? Do you read discriininately, withholding judgments until all the facts are gathered? Are you assuming your responsibilities in the affairs of today? Furthermore, are you practicing good citizenship in your home, in the class room, in the home room, in the associated student body meetings, and on the athletic field? EARILE E. CRAWFORD l I III IIIEITIORIAIH To Robert Stoll, distinguished member of the Class of '36 we dedicate this page. His bright smile, his sturdy charac- ter, and his gentleness of spirit endeared him to all. FACIILTIJ SEIIIORS W. Aldrich B. Bentley M. Bray 0. Brunner L. Cereda E. Algeo E. Bentley E. Brewster F. Ray Holmes Four short years have passed like magic, and inexperienc-- ed youngsters who entered Napa High in '31 are leaving,- f our years older, four years larger, and many years wiser. In a few short weeks, the Class of '35 will be, instead, a group of separate individuals, each with his own life to carve. Important ofiicers of this class have been Dave York and William Aldrich, who wielded the gavel of the student body for a semester each, Barbara Bentley and Margaret Green, both presidents of Girls' League: and Attilio Musante and Neil Haeckl, who steered the Senior craft through the shoals. In the field of athletics, Frank "Cleets" Petrillo, Ed Algeo, Ronald Green, and Miles Butler have been outstanding foot- ball players. Butler captained the varsity, and Green, the B's. Gilbert Yates, James Tierney, and Frank Watson have made their marks in basketball. At a dance given by the Seniors on April fifteenth, Mel Hein's nine-piece orchestra contributed excellent music. The decorations of woolly lambs and furry-legged satyrs lent a springtime atmosphere. With expenses ranging at nineteen dollars, about fifty dollars was added to the Senior treasury. The J uuior-Senior Prom was, of course, the major formal event of the year. Senior activities began in earnest with the selling of tickets for "Growing Pains", the planning for Sneak Day fand was it kept secret this yearljg the training for the regattag and the organizing for Class Night. Then followed the more serious arrangements for Baccalaureate, graduation dresses and speakers, and the nervous struggle amidst all of the ac- tivity to keep the sheepskin safely within reach. After our experiences together, it is with mixed feelings of eagerness and regret that the Class of '35 become members of the large and confused world outside. Eagerness to find what lies around the corner struggles with regret that we cannot stay longer beneath the sheltering arm of Napa High. SEIIIOR PLAIJ George McIntyre .. ,..,...... Robert Jones "Growing Pains" was the play given by the Class of 1935 on April 12. Mrs. McIntyre and the abstracted Professor, Mr. McIn- tyre, are worried over the "growing pains" of their two children. George, the son, is suffering from adolescence. His sister, Terry, who has not yet awakened to her budding womanhood, still clings determinedly to her status of tomboy. Suddenly, however, Terry blossoms out with a pair of French heels and her first formal, anld George swaps a gun for an old fender- less, hoodless car. On the day before Terry and George's party, Prudence Darling, a bewitching flirt, joins the neighborhood gang. George and Brian, Terry's flame, fall for her silly line. Miserable over Brian's change of heart, Terry experiments, using Prudence's tactics, but fails. During the party, George, going after more ice cream, is followed by a traflic oflicer, who insults Prudence. George knocks him down and is forthwith taken to jail. The last act shows George desolate because Prudence acknowl- edges that she is engaged to an "old man" of twenty-six. Terry re- covers her equilibrium and deserts her high4heeled slippers for the beloved skates. When a new girl appears upon the scene, George, realizing that after all, his heart may be broken a second time, ex- claims, "Hot Diggity Dog!" JIIHIOR CLASS JUHIOR CLASS R STOLL C. Our class has produced some outstanding athletes, among them Joe Casulo, Ralph Dellarnadalena, Bob Kinder, and Arnold "Babe" Martini. Dellamadalena was A Basketball captain this year. Each year the rivalry between the Juniors and Seniors in the Regatta increases. 'This time the Junior class is deter- mined to take the honors, and the crew is practicing hard for the event. Several Junior girls have done excellent art work for the Napanee, these being Dorothy Glos, Helen Dusenberry, and Emily George. Another girl to win laurels for her class was Iva Mae Luhman, who carried off the Rotary Club prize for an essay on the history and accomplishments of the club. The first Junior play, "The Hardwick Murder Mystery", directed by Miss Margaret Norton, was Well received by the students and a net profit of fifty dollars was realized. The cast included Billie Ezettie, Edgar Imrie, Jean Malone, Wilbur Blodgett, Bill Remington, James Wetmore, Donald Ferguson, and Jane Wakefield. The two other plays planned for, at the time the Napanee went to press, had not been given. Plans for the annual Junior-Senior prom are in progress, and we hope to make it a larger affair than ever before. Com- mittees are working out a Spanish theme, decorating the walls with gay senoritas, and handsome cavaliers, and the setting promises to be unusual and romantic. The Class of '36 looks forward to assuming the responsi- bilities of its Senior year, and hopes to make it as successful and as interesting as the present Seniors have done. Regular meetings and council meetings are held on alternate second and fourth Thursdays of the month. The Welfare Committee, one of the three standing com- mittees of the League, gave valuable assistance to the Napa Chapter of the Red Cross by supervising preparation of twenty Thanksgiving baskets, later given to deserving families. Other projects undertaken by the Welfare group included the distri- bution of clothes, and care extended to the needy. Social activities and functions, made possible by the Enter- tainment Committee, included the traditional Big and Little Sisters' Tea, Hare and Hound Chase, a picnic, the Girls' League card party, and the series of regular faculty teas. The organi- zation of an orchestra was another feature of the year. With ritual ceremonies, the fall term oiiicers will be in- stalled this spring, preparing for the history of the Napa Union High School another account of a still more successful year for the Girls' League. Much progress has been made by the club in the-boys' voices and in the ability to read music. The club is an important and appreciated unit in the school's activities. c,mLs' GLEE ll Miss Bl.lFf1Qld,S Advanced Glee Club is composed of girls having one or more years of vocal training. These girls aim to become acquainted with and sing the best of music. As well as in local projects, they participate in all of the activities put forth by the F. F. A. of America, both state and nationa. One former member of our chapter, Lowell Eidington, was the first American Farmer from California, the highest degree possible in F. F. A. work. He was the first State President of California, and also held the office of President of the Napa Union High School student body for two semesters. Eighty per cent of the students who have graduated and have taken Vocational Agriculture, are now working in some line of farm work. From all indications, the chapter will take a very active part in the State Fair contests. Each year the members of the chapter look forward to the annual trip to the Garcia River in Mendocino County, where they have established a cooperative camp. Here each boy has his duties to perform. The regular routine of camp life is broken by fishing, swimming, and many other summer sports. The annual banquet will be held in June, at which time interest- ing speakers will entertain the usual large gathering of guests. The awards will be given for the best projects in agriculture and agricultural mechanics. The six cups donated by the three Napa banks will also be awarded. IDELFARE ORCQAIIIZATIOII Functioning over a year, the Boys' Welfare Organization has for its objective the promotion of better character, leader- ship, citizenship, and school loyalty. Governed by their own constitution and by-laws, with every member on a Working committee, they are realizing their aim to serve. HE ITIEII Only senior boys may belong to the He Men, a group organized seven years ago to give boys the "man's side" of family relations, the home, and its management. Cooking in- structions are also given by Miss Parker. Two big annual events are the trip to San Francisco and an alumni banquet. LE. CERCLE FRAIICAIS French Words tear through the air at the ten regular meetings per year of Le Cercle Francais. With Craig Friel and George Ihorn as presidents, the meetings have been very lively. The usual spring formal dance was successfully given, and the climax to the activities was the trip to San Francisco. LES BEBES "The Babies", or Les Bebes, is a junior club for French I students. The meetings are carried on entirely in the language, and help members develop a "Frenchier" accent, as well as a more definite idea of the exact meaning of French words. Dorothy Glos was the president for last semester. DER GOETHE UEREIH After being rather inactive during the first semester, the German Club, under the leadership of Charles Niccolls, made up for former inactivity with enthusiastic meetings and social affairs. At these bi-monthly assemblies, German customs and problems were discussed. SODALITAS LATIIIA The Sodalitas Latina aims to promote scholarship and a sense of responsibility. B and C teams have been formed, for membership in which, five points are given. Members making fifty-five points are presented with a small pennant. This affords more girls an opportunity to win recognition. The requirements for a Block N are seventy points, gained from participating in sports, making honor teams, taking five five- mile hikes, and passing decathalon tests with a high rating. The banquet, which will bring to a climax the year's activities, will be held in Napa. A FOOTBALL GO GET 'EM INDIANS! The sprightly A team was full of pep and fight, and regardless of Whether they Won or lost a game, gave the spectators an exhibition of real playing. Each game found the men as full of vim and enthusiasm as the last one. We regret losing ten men with such morale. B FOOTBALL SIGNALS! The B's -displayed remarkable teamwork, and rushed heart and soul into the fray. Every game lost was by an errceedingly small margin, and a creditable number of victories were scored by this courageous team, not the least of which was the slcalping of Vallejo by the fighting Papooses. A BASKETBALL SWISH l The A hoopsters swished balls into the baskets until they literally wore out the nets. Field goals, free throws, and more field goals, ran up the score to an overwhelming victory in many of the games. Gil Yates won the trophy for free throws by making the highest percentage of the season. B BASKETBALL ANOTHER GOAL! The light-weight casaba-tossers were fleet of foot and sure oi' eye in taking the ball down the floor and finding the basket. Many oi' their victories were won at great odds, against taller and heavier opponents. But it was all in the day's work to the Babes! C'BASKETBALL PEP! Spirit and iight combined to make the championship C team. They played a minimum of losing games, and piled up victories against formidable opponents, giving a fine display of perfect teamwork. Turlock, a strong team, was swept off its feet in an intersectional game by the C's. TERHB SERVICE! They can't come too fast and furious for Napa's net men. Clever serves, powerful drives, and tricky returns in backhand may be witnessed whenever these fellows are on the court. Most of the boys have several more years at Napa High, and watch their records grow! TRACK THEY'RE OFF! Tinelzer topping, pole vaulting, sprinting, distance running, discus hurling, high jumping, shot putting, and broad jumping! All out for the ribbons and bringing them in! More spirit was displayed in track than has been shown for several years. Hats oil' to the lxoys and coaches! BASEBALL IT'S A HIT! Many of these bingles shot out into the field from the hefty swings of the Napa batters. Excellent fielding and few errors were shown by the team as a whole and their whole-hearted playing was matched in no less degree by the enthusiastic fans of the great game. SPORTS A FOOTBALL Under the leadership of Coach Bob La Rue and Captain Miles Butler, the A team kept fighting at any cost. The team was defeated by Vallejo, chiefly through the efforts of "Fast-Mail Johnson". ln the League game with San Rafael, Napa, with a score of 13-0 against them in the fourth quarter, staged a brilliant come-back, winning 14-13. The A's will lose ten seniors, but the outlook is still bright for next year. B FOOTBALL Although the B team, under Coach John Colledge, won two league games, and lost three, the losses were all by small scores. Captain Ronny Green was a noteworthy player. The traditional Vallejo game was won by the sensa- tional playing of every man, to a score of 6-0. This was the first victory by Napa over Vallejo in Class B competition. The touchdown was made by Linzie Kramer. George Peterson starred as linesman, and Captain Green, Ed Algeo, and Jim Tierney played fine defensive ball in the backfield. A BASKETBALL Coach Bob La Rue whipped an inexper- ienced squad into a team that took third place in the League, winning ten out of eighteen games. Captain Ralph Dellamada- lena played his usual brilliant defensive game. Gil Yates, on the team for a half year only, treated fans to some exciting basketball. Thormalen was a find of the season, and Watson, Thomas, and Munro turned in fine ball. B BASKETBALL Although handicapped by size, the B team, composed of entirely new material, under Coach Loren Critser, also took third place in the League. Captain Ed Algeo led the team in scoring, with 94 points. Charlie Niccolls, center, per- formed some flashy defensive work. Mel Linder was the kind of player who kept the rest of the team on their toes. Bottarini, Guthrie, Holmes, Pescio, and Brunner all played ex- ceptional basketball. C BASKETBALL Under Coach Critser, and led by Captain Guthrie, the small, but hard-fighting C team won many victor- ies, with their fast-breaking offense and an air-tight defense. After defeating Tamalpais to a score of 24-18, they were nosecl out of the League championship by Santa Rosa by a s-core of 18-15. Vallejo, however, was defeated in two games with scores of 33-11, and 26-13. TRACK With about fifty boys out for track, this sport is staging a come-back under Coaches Hemmerling, Critser, and La Rue. In the A's, Musante, ace hurdler and pole-vaulter, competes in his last year. Deserving mention are Haeckl, in the 2205 Sanders, in the high jump, and Thormalen, in the 440. Among the B's, Holderman looks promising in the high jump and shot, Tierney, in the 880 and broad jump, Tonascia, in the dashes g and Ohland, in the 220 hurdles. TENNIS Tennis teams, coached by Mr. Youtz, were en- tirely new material this year. J ack Wilcox, however, won two straight first singles matches in the League play. Jack Price, Bob Carter, and Charles Henry are adding their talents to the spring teams. BASEBALL Although at the time of this writing, no games have been played, and Napa is not in the League this year, she should be represented by a good team. Added to the veterans, Martini, Dellamadalena, Guthrie, and Casulo, the rookies, Ray Nasuti, Jim Tonascia, Joie Tonascia, and Pete Bennett, will undoubtedly break into the line-up. Y W I ,Q- 1 . Yesterday, Annabelle, while I was going through a strange little town with crooked streets, I missed my bus connection and decided to wander about a bit. Before I knew it, I was in the thick of adventure. I saw a large building off by itself and entered it to inquire my way. Imagine my fright, when hardly within, doors on all sides burst open and a horde like Napoleon's army descended upon me! Down long runways they came, each battling to get somewhere fast. When that rush was over, I felt like a scrambled egg. As I was looking around for someone to question, a short, stocky individual came rushing at me, asking in a deep basso profundo, "D'ya wanna buy a News?" I left him standing there. Lost and worried, I peeked into a room and found a sleek, sophisticated brunette discussing art with a generously-proportioned, spit-curled blonde, while a fashion-plate with auburn hair applied Max Factor carefully. I withdrew my head in a hurry and almost bumped into a dignified man with a Durante nose. I was greatly surprised a little later to see this same im- pressive personage actually joking with a large Irishman whose hair had taken leave of absence. I heard some weird discord coming from a row of glass doors. Well, I might as well brave it, I thought, and boldly opened one of the doors, ready for anything. Imagine my disappointment to find only a group of musici- ans, each busy on his own favorite song! The whistle-tooting Toscanini who was directing them seemed distracted by a closely-cropped cornet player. This auditorium seemed to be the center of activity, for later in the afternoon, I found a play in practice. There, a curvacious blonde was deeply engaged in conversation with a barrel-cheste-d small Tarzan, and a brunette upset everyone with her "Goot Morning!" Determined to find my location at any risk, I approached what looked like an office, but found it locked and a pane broken in one of the doors. Within, excited red-faced men were taking the Durante's fingerprints. I overhearid one remark: "Just an annual February event." At this moment, a slim brown-eyed woman, bustled up the hall with a hotwater bottle under one arm and the worries of the world across her brow. I felt sure that this kindly person would help me, but she had al- ready whisked out of sight. Despairingly, I followed a group up at runway and into what turned out to be a meeting. The president was a regular Stepanovich Vladivosky with black curls and fuzz all over his face. I think they were Reds, Annabelle, one stub-nosed fellow with popping blue eyes, and a freckled-faced Stepin Fechit constantly contradicted all of the mem- bers, the president, and finally each other. Afraid of this radical group, I slipped quietly through the door, but bumped into two blackbirds, one a blue, and one in a yellow sweater. The latter flashed white teeth villain- ously at me from beneath a black moustache. Believe me, Annabelle, I would hate to meet those two in the dark! Concluding that I had better escape, I rushed down the runway and toward the end of a long hall. Love-in Bloom, and plenty of it, flowered about me. One tall, demure miss and a collar-ad boy had completely for-- gotten the world over a cold radiator just inside the entrance. Out in the sunshine, an athletic blonde couple discussed rather vociferously on the lawn, and a long-haired siren promenaded holding hands with a darkly handsome boy. It must be spring, Annabelle. I think I'll buy a new hat. Uiclim Algeo, E. ......,..,.... . Aldrich, W. ...... ., Anderson, E. Andrade, R. ...... . Archer, M. .....,.... . Azevedo, E. ....... .
