THE CLASS OF 1941 MYNDERSE ACADEMY SENECA FALLS, N. Y. 'pSieA ntl VOLUME SIXTEEN of the MYNDERSIAN

Page 8 text:

FOREWORD According to the legend, when the (Ire.at Spirit blessed the Iroquois, he left the imprint of his hand and long tapering fingers in the soil from which the six lakes sprang, and thus gave us our Finger Lakes. Hut the lakes took their names from the Indians who thus have left the indelible impress of their people on central New York. In fact counties, towns, and rivers with their musical names remind us that not a foot of our community lacks a story connected with those earlier residents of this locality. Sites of thirteen Indian villages dot the shores of our own Lake Cayuga, while only forty miles away we find the headquarters of the Six Nations south of Syracuse. This is truly a land rich in the color and romance of Indian lore. For instance, as we look around us at our beautiful lake country, it is difficult to realize that in 1779, only one hundred and sixty-two years ago, this section between what is known as Cayuga Lake State Park and the Inlet at Geneva was the site of the important military encampment of one-third of the American army of that day. You know the story of the Sullivan-Indian expedition of that time, perhaps. If you do, you realize that by a series of treaties this land was acquired from the Indians though they reserved for a time territory a mile square around what is now Canoga. There today on a wooded slope up from the Cayuga Lake Boulevard we see the monument pictured on the opposite page, which marks the approximate birthplace of Red Jacket, wily orator and chieftain of the Senecas. This Canoga land the Indians also lost, but it is known to students of Indian history that they dearly loved Seneca County and have never given up the hope of buying land here, where they may settle and live on soil their forefathers once owned. All of this may seem a far cry from the story of the year in a modern high school, but is it? In an environment such as this, we find the new order. The Indians had their tribes, activities, sports; we have our classes, activities, and sports. Sometimes as the shouts of our cheering section go up to shake the autumn sky, perhaps the spirits of those earlier braves listen in silent awe to this newer version of war cry. as our warriors go out for the scalps of their football foes. Yes, ours is a story book land, and we must not forget to pay tribute to those earlier Central New Yorkers who loved and lost this land.
