-' pr' i l K ROW Flynn, Kinney, Romamclr W, Vogel, Romaniclr J., O'Grady, Romeo, Calarco OND ROW: Merkel, Ralxton, Trulan, O'Brien, Boxwell, Clerk, Mitchell, Turri WER ROW: Minor, Hamilton, Knox, Toomey, Finn, Stergerwald, Adviser ACANTHUS Our art club, Acanthus, whose name was chosen because of the fact that the acanthus leaf was the chief decorative motive of the ancient Greeks, had its fourth birthday in February of this year. Officers for the year were lohn Toomey, president, Aden VanCleef, vice- president, Robert Hamilton, secretary, Donald Knox, treasurer, Florence Finn, publicity managerg Viola Minor, program chairman, Mrs. Rena Steigerwald, faculty adviser. Acanthus has had an active year. Early in the fall, work was begun on the articles for the club's annual gift sale at Christmas time. Card table covers, book marks, book covers, and pillows were made of suede by the members. At the gift sale, there was also held an exhibition and sale of lapanese wood-block prints. ln March, a benefit bridge party held in the art room, was sponsored by the club. Also in this month, something new in the art line was inaugurated in Mynderse. This was the charcoal sketch class organized by Mrs. Steigerwald that met after school once every two weeks. Its purpose was to arouse an active art interest in the school, and judging by the enthusiastic response, this purpose was realized. The classes were well attended, and students from various classes acted as models for the studies in charcoal. Through the art column in the Microphone, Acanthus has kept the school in- formed of its activities and aims. Also, art news and topics ot interest to students of Mynderse have been published in this column. In lune, the annual banquet will be given in honor of the seniors, featured by speeches by members of the club and the presentation of farewell gifts to the members who will be lost to the club through their graduation later in the month. This social event will bring the year to a successful close. 22

The officers elected to carry out this year's program were Philip Olmstead, president, Genevieve Dombrowski, secretary, Ethel Bookman, treasurer, and Miss Riley, faculty adviser. A new idea adapted by the club limits the number of new members to be taken in at one time to ten in order that they may be more thoroughly assimilated into the activities of the club and have more concentrated practice and improvement in speaking the French language, a more comprehensive knowledge of France and the French people, and a happy association with fellow French students. In February the French Club's main activity was a library project, displaying the streets and buildings ot Paris. The Champs Elysees is the famous street around which the exhibit centered. La Place de La Concorde, the scene of re- cent riots, was skillfully interpreted. Among the important buildings were the Arc de Triumph, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, the University of Paris, and the Pantheon, which bears a sign over its door: The fatherland is grateful for its famous men. Later in the year a goodly number of old and new members of Le Cercle Francais went to Rochester for their annual banquet at the French Tea Room. A typical French menu was servedg and Miss Lillian Hull, hostess of the tea room, who has spent several years travelling and studying in France, lectured on French customs. One of the most interesting phases of work of the year was the use of films de- picting French life and customs at several of the club meetings. Miss Riley lec- tured during these periods, explaining the various pictures by telling the story behind each. 23
