"The shaping of our own liie is our own work. It is a thing
of beauty, or a thing ol shame, as we ourselves make it. We lay
the corner and add joint to joint,' we give the proportion, we set
the finish. It may be a thing of beauty and of joy forever."
There's a time for everything, someone has said: a time to be
born and a time to die, but, as some wag also said, "it's the time
in between that worries me." There's a time for school and a
time for workg a time for love and a time for marriage, a time
for worry and a time for fun. The time . . . the minutes, the
hours, the days, and months, and the years we have spent here
. . . have been eventful and good years, sometimes sorrowful,
most times glad, filled to capacity with joyous things for us to
do. Is it any wonder we chose "Time and School Life" as the
theme of the 1964 Oaks?
So as we venture forth, we leave behind us in the pages of
this yearbook another world . . . a world of fond memories and
a record of things attempted and things achieved. In this volume
we leave but a trace, even a hint or two, perhaps, of the many
adventures we had. One must read between the lines of this
book in order to savor its content to the fullest.
We are sure you will agree, whether you are a senior or not,
that this yearbook is a kind of symbol for all of us. Page by
page, it ticks off each precious minute and hour of our school
days . . . more precious to us now because they are almost gone.
The Oaks, which may be thought of as growing and developing
out of a little Acorn, is a symbol of growth and of strength. This
yearbook will always be cherished by us, the Senior Class of '64.

Hugh H. Campbell, Vice-President
When Mr. Hugh Campbell decided
to retire from our Board of Education
last fall, it was a great loss for this
community. He was a dedicated mem-
ber of the Board, able and conscien-
tious. Incidentally, his children were
graduated by this high school, as well
as he. Good luck, Mr. Campbell!

"The shaping of our own life is
our own work. It is a thing of beau-
ty, or a thing of shame, as we our-
selves make it. We lay the comer
and add joint to jointg we give the
proportion, we set the finish. It may
be a thing of beauty and of joy
for ever." - Ware

This season Cross Country team, coached
under Coach Donn Westman, set records in the
Conference Meet by being the only team to win
twice in history. They also set a scoring record
by having the greatest point spread between the
Tigers and second-place team, of 43 points.
Heights had 69 points.
Next season the Cross-Country will be minus
the powers of Wayne Leadman, Dick Cecot, and
Mike Cassacly who will graduate.
Wayne Leadman broke three course records
at Holland, Traverse City, and Muskegon
Dick Cecot kept the winning spirit in the boys
by his determined running. This gave the team
the balance needed to win.
Mike Cassady showed his skill by coming
from an 18th place last year to a fifth place
Jim Autman broke the Muskegon course
record. He still has two years of competitions
ahead and has unlimited potential.
Don Neal qualified in the Regional meet to
represent M.H.H.S. at the State finals by plao
ing 10th of 156 competitors.

Dan Krueger, regular quarterback, has a little
joke for the rest of his backfield. However, Dan
was later disabled by an injury, as was Wil-
liams, Scott and McLemore were more fortu-
nate and finished the entire season.
Dr. Max Busard, a former Heights Tiger himself, looln
into Captain Marc Engleright's back with his ears.
Pete McLemore KZSB rolls across the goal-line for the second touchdown
against Muskegon. John Scott scored earlier in the game.

Like the Sealed Power sign says, you have insured your job future
by "work well done."
Through application and study you have graduated from High
School. This is an important step in your life - a milestone on the
road toward a rewarding and satisfying future.

John F. Kennedy

"Ask not what your country can do for youg ask what you can do for your
Inaugural address, January 20, 1961
john F. Kennedy was bom May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts, a
suburb of Boston. He attended Princeton and Harvard Universities, graduating
cum laude from Harvard in 1940. He attended graduate school at Stanford
University, Stanford, California, before enlisting in the Navy in 1941. At 29, he
became the youngest member of the House of Representatives, where he served
for six years. In September, 1953, he married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and they
had two children. He was a member of the Senate for eight years. Campaigning
with Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960 presidential election, he won by a plurality
of fewer than 150,000 votes of the 70 million cast. The electoral college vote
registered 303 to 219 for Nixon. He was inaugurated january 20, 1961, He
was the youngest man ever elected President and the first Roman Catholic.
Let us remember President Kennedy with warm, happy thoughts about his
ideal of equality regardless of race, creed, or color, and put this ideal to work
in- our daily lives. As loyal Americans we will remember him as we remember
Abraham Lincoln and "Thank God we had him, even for a little time."
