MURRELL DOBBINS Area Vocational- Technical School continues to hear the inner-city's cry for HELP! The young men and young women who come here need training to enter a decent world of work and trade. Dobbins continues to be a multifaceted school, continues to survive despite cut-backs in Federal spending, and continues to operate even through the city's Hnancial crisis with its school system. The many aspects of the Dobbins curricula include academic, mechanical, technical, scientihc, and com- mercial skills. The varied program lends itself to any ambition. Dobbins is not just a neighborhood school, its student body comes from various sections of the Philadelphia area. ' CARPENTRY STUDENTS at work constructing a house ,..f,if'jff. THE FACULTY IS AN industrious group engaged in a constant search for new and better methods, and they have sought to instill in us a thirst for learning. This year they struggled to raise their own standard of living and to improve conditions in the classrooms. They, themselves, never stop learning. Many attend classes in the evening at the various universities in the area. WHERE THE ACTION IS! UP FROM THE RANKS and now in his third year as our Principal, Mr. Edward Magliocco continues his dedication to the educational progress of our students. Mr. Magliocco graduated from Central High School and received his Bachelors of Science and Masters in Education Degrees from Temple University. He also attended two National Science Foundation Summer Institutes in Mathematics. Well armed with these degrees and certificates, Mr. Magliocco came to Dobbins as a Related Math teacher and was later selected to become the first teacher in Philadelphia and in the state of Penna. to teach Scientific Computer Data Processing. He also served as a Post High Class Sponsor, was a roster man, and to keep from getting "bored" became active with the Dobbins interscholastic teams. He has served on the Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams. Being an avid golfer, it was only natural that Mr. Magliocco also became a coach of the Golf team. Weather and time permitting, the golf links are still his favorite way to relax. The Senior Class recognizes and appreciates the tremendous responsibilities of being our principal and would like to bid him farewell with the hope that he will find many enjoyable and fruitful years at Dobbins. 9 lrwln Spector Vice Principals Henry Guynn THE DUTIES OF A MANAGEMENT TEAM of aides to the Principal are varied and variable. Many of us know each of the men who have these jobs. Some of them are in contact with student groups and some are in contact with us as individuals. Sometimes we see them because we have done something wrong but most of the time we confer with them for some improvement or problem. We are sure that the help the Principal gets from these energetic men helps make his job a little bit more palatable. Donald Bakove F M l p E "5- Alvin Bines Frederick Branch Margery R. THE DOBBINS 1973 Football Team finished with a 1-3-2 slate. lt was a very disappointing year for the team and coaching staff, because we had hopes of going all the way. The Public High Football Teams got off to a slow start because of the strike that crippled the first few weeks of practice, but we tried not to let that bother us. We got off to a good beginning with our practice games. We tied the West Philadelphia team, and then went on to beat Germantown. But we didn't stop there, we opened up the season by beating Bok 28-6. They gave us a tough going in the first half, but we came back winners. As we took the field at Roxborough to play Franklin, we had the confidence of a winner, but things didn't go our way that day because we lost a heart- breaker by two points. We thought that we could bounce back against the tough Northeast team but we fell to them by two points. We gave them a hard way to go with our razzle- dazzle plays, which enabled us to get within two points of them. Dobbins went on to lose to Washington in a game in which we played very poor football. A game in which we played great first half of football came against Edison, 48 but they rallied in the final period to tie us. We really went all out to beat Mastbaum. lt was Thanksgiving Day and we took the field at Frankford. We knew we had a victory, we played a very tough game against Mastbaum, who was supposed to be the Public League's number one team. We had some outstanding players in this game, like the hard running of David Elliot, and joe Irby, and the leadership of Greg johnson, who was a devoted person toward the game. We also had some outstanding defense players such as Kenny Williams, Al Cooper, Ron Keroff, and Fred Way. These were some of the players who morally de- feated Mastbaum with their determination and skills, which enabled us to walk away with a6-6 tie. This hurt Mastbaum. During the past season of football, Dobbins had some outstanding players. A. Rice who made All- Public Team, j. Irby was the League's hardest running back, G. johnson was a determined quarterback, who played every game 100fX:. Our defense was outstanding all year, but we had weaknesses in it. Next year we will have a chance of taking the Division title because half the team is returning. AT DOBBINS THERE ARE TWO WAYS to build a varsity program in football. One is titled jV and the other, Cadet. These yearling teams play a full schedule and provide the needed experience for future varsity competition. Regardless of the obstacles thrown in its path, the Flame and Steel manages to be printed and distributed each year. This year the teacher's strike held up production for 55 days. Bent, but not broken, the staff worked doubly hard and this yearbook was completed before the close of school. However, bindery operations took place during the summer and the book was mailed to the seniors from the binding company. This should be a valuable addition to the Music Department's Program. We know it will help to replace the musicians who are lost by graduation each year, and the task of putting a full organization on the field each fall should be a little less difficult. The Stage Crew, a service organization, is respon-sible for the routine maintenance and operation of all theatrical and sound equipment in the school. The men of the crew are EI, IN, and ES students working under the sponsorship of Mr. G. Solomon. Many challenges were thrown at the Stage Crew this year. They ran a complete set of assemblies and senior homerooms in the auditorium, they restored the auditorium spot- light and projection room, and relamped the stage lights. The biggest challenge came with "Raisin in the Sun". The Stage Crew became the producers for Mrs. Whitehead's Drama Club production of this famous play. They helped design the lighting, they decorated the set, helped collect the props and managed the stage during the play. Pictured here from left to right are: 1. Coles, W. johnson, Mr. Solomon, A. Mr. Spector returned to Dobbins in 1966 after a long and varied career of teaching and administrative work. He taught in the Veterans' Education Program at Bok, he taught mathematics and industrial arts at South Philadelphia High School, he taught mechanical engineering subjects at Temple University Technical Institute, and at the Pennsylvania State University Ogontz Center. For eleven years prior to returning to Dobbins, he served as coordinator at Mastbaum. At Dobbins, he assisted in the development of the Mathematics and Machine Design Curricula. He also organized the Color Guard and the Cheerleader Squad. Mr.Spector received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Drexel, and his M.S. at the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied at the Temple University Graduate School. Mr. Spector believes that if education is to be effective in preparing young people to live in today's world, it must include education for employment. Over the years, the curriculum at Dobbins has not only met this goal, but has kept pace with the changing vista of the world of work. Mr. Spector had a great deal to do with shaping the philosophy of this school. We wish him many happy years of retirement. Ann Schweitzer Q.. Irwin Spector APPOINTED T0 Dobbins in 1939, Miss Ann Schweitzer spent her entire teaching career at Dobbins. It was her first and only teaching post. She came here shortly after graduation from Temple University. During her long years of dedicated service, she was instrumental in shaping the careers of many of our former students. For in addition to her teaching duties, she served on the Pupil Progress Committee. She constantly surveyed the underclassmen, to insure that each individual student was rostered to the particular courses he needed to earn a diploma. Miss Schweitzer served as the chairman of Girls' Physical Education in our school, and also was chairman of Volleyball City-Wide. She established the Volleyball jamboree which was held annually. Dobbins hosted the lamboree for more than twenty years. In january 1973, Miss Schweitzer retired from the school system. Flame and Steel joins all of her friends in wishing her good health and happiness. We thank her for the opportunity of having known her. him afaeffeqak . . work with their hands and are taught to think with their minds by Miss Bernstein 0 To the Class of june 1973: Fantastic! No other word could possibly describe these past two years l've spent as sponsor for the class of '73, Planning activities with your officers and working with the various committees at times became hectic, but always was fun and challenging. A, ,Q ff , ff ff- in Q , M' - 2 y, mv-wa. .. E Q On April llth, the Class of '73 along with a few teachers and parents went to Disneyworld. At the airport we were given Dramamine pills to ward off airsickness, and with a slight delay in schedule we were on our way to Disneyworld. The flight was a smooth and pleasant one. We were served breakfast and given maps and tickets for use in Disneyworld. We arrived in Florida at 11:00 a.m. and at Disney- world at l2 noon. From ,there we took either the monorail, tram, or ferry to the park. There were lockers at the main entrance where coats and other items could be stored. ln Disneyworld there were numerous souvenir shops and restaurants. Some of the most popular attractions were the Haunted Mansion where we rode in chairs and saw all kinds of illusions and ghosts who were "dying" to meet us. Also there was the Hall of Presidents, and the Grand Prix, where we drove miniature racing cars. Also wonderful to see were Skyway to Tomor- rowland and Flight to the Moon, where we watched almost human robots and took a simulated flight into orbit. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a submarine ride that took you under water to witness fantastic marvels. A circular movie on the beautiful things in America was called --appropriately enough - America the Beautiful. Before we boarded the plane back to Philadelphia, there was a tableful of Florida oranges and grapefruits on sale which we bought to take home, and from the Philadelphia airport we boarded the buses which took us back to school. Loaded down with souvenirs, we were happy, tired and broke. This trip to Disneyworld was a Dobbins first - and never to be forgotten. Right On! to the Class of '73 for the best trip ever! 01622 742 as M 54, gif? . , 2 Q K. qw, wi V, if .VV. Roman Qffectztlalm Some of the friendships we made at Dobbins will be everlasting friendships. Some of these will not end as we leave Dobbins, but will be continued for the rest of our lives. The graduating exercises will be the last time the class will meet all together. After com- mencement, the class will be scattered to different places trying to build better futures for themselves. Some will go directly into industry, others will go into business, the armed forces and higher education. The year 7973 was a very good year for the graduating class. ln the beginning, the class did not have themselves together. They were not even acquainted with one another when they r7rst entered Dobbins three and four years ago. As the years passed, this class has 'gotten themselves together!" This included trips, proms, and other class activities. So with mixed emotions, the Class of june 7973 says, "Farewell Dobbins," and "Right On!" to the incoming Senior Class.
