Education was hit hard and 54 Murray State's share of state funds was cut by O S962,500. As a result, the Board of Regents scrambled to find ways to reduce the costs of running the Universi- ty. Reductions were made in expense accounts and in the renovation budget. Some academic programs were singled out for possible extinction or merger. As a result of the decrease in state funds, tuition, housing and dining rates all increased. Separate fees were charged for the SHIELD and for use of the Student Health Service. Qualifications for student loans were made more rigid and the interest rates charged on these loans rose. Life at MSU became more expensive. So students, too, had to find shortcuts.
