Fighting Buckete ers While Murray's senior varsity basketball team did not have a particularly successful season, they were always fighting. The first game at Roches- ter was a very hard fought, low scoring game, ending in defeat for the Pilots. The team bounced back, however, and was victorious over Le Cen- ter, 45-39, and Concordia, 57-56. The Pilots also defeated a very strong alumnae team by two points in a three minute overtime. In the Hrst conference game, the Pilots bowed in defeat to a strong Johnson team. In successive games, the scrappy Pilot men lost to Minneapolis Southwest, St. Paul Central, Mechanic Arts, Humboldt, Harding, and Wilson. Their hard work was finally rewarded when the bucketeers defeated the Monroe Green Wave and the Wash- ington Prexies. The Pilot bucketeers were a quick reacting team. Because they were not large, Coach George Rose depended on speed and fast breaks. The team was led in scoring by co-captains James Jannett and James Pearson. Among the leading contenders for starting berths next year are John Vollmer, William Engebretson, Gary Alm, Thomas Skovholt, and Robert Griffin.

After a close struggle with Humboldt for second place in the Relay Carnival, the team took third fied seven boys and one relay team in the city finals. The team strength was about the same as last year, but the squad still lacked depth in many events. Don Steinle of the Junior Varsity track team won the 220 yard dash and showed great promise in with Central placing first.
