Accompanied by the stirring call of trum- pets, the thunder of the basses, and the pip- ing of the flutes, the Murray Band marched splendidly through the season attired in trim new uniforms. All through the fall, teachers plaintively complained of the din of the band trudging back and forth in front of the building, and students glanced frequently out of the windows. These glances at best were hardly reassuring. The marchers seemed to be wandering about looking completely lost. No one ever quite figured out how, on the night of the game, that group of cold and bewildered practicers was transformed into a straight-ranked, compact marching band able to execute complicated manoeuvers. Through every pep assembly and game this gallant outfit proudly supported our cham- pionship team. llN lHIlHll wfvafki, Although the members ot the band had to become accustomed to a new style of directing this year, it didn't keep them from turning out some very sharp concerts. Mr. Heron's popularity with his "musicians" enabled band and director to work together in the kind ot close harmony that spells enjoyment for all who listen. One of the band's hardest tasks was the Thanksgiving Parade when they marched in near- blizzard weather and were slightly handicapped by instruments which were frozen stiff and solid, The highlight of the year was, of course, the spring con- cert. Everyone loved the crashing overtures and poignant show tunes. We are all proud to look upon the Murray Band and call it "ours," Q . ,uf . -4 ,- 'I-vu A ver r a y to direct the b d 0 e leader, Mr. Alexond H Learn to live, and live to learn, Ignorance like a fire doth burn, Little tasks make large return." -Bayard Taylor E . ..g.. .ii- .1-1-1: iii -ii- a""'- -Q fqnaiyzm lay, Nnadzm Page Today learning in itself is an experience that is a vital part of everyday living, and that experience may be some- thing accomplished in terms of a completed assignment, information gained from par- ticipation in a forum, work done for an extra-curricular activity, or facts learned through long hours of study and research. And what a season to remember! lt will be a long time before future grid teams and fans will be more thrilled and happy than were the 1947 Pilot football team and the ardent supporters when the final conference game ended 31-6 in favor of Mtirray over Marshall. The road to the City championship was 11ot a smooth one. for the ten competing high schools played bang-up football. Coach Ralph lingebretson's team took each game i11 stride, dropping only one contest. Murray entered the gridiron competition as a team "building for next year." The first game gave sports writ- ers and fans a digerent idea as Coach Engebretson's boys took Mechanic Arts 15-7 and dominated seventy per cent of the play. By the time the Harding team yvas scheduled to meet Murray, the Pilot linemen were making it possible for the backfield to get in some tricky plays to defeat the Harding Maroons 19-6. The VVashington Presidents were next to feel the poyv- er of the Murray line and to see the speed of its back- field. A 20-0 score gave Murray a decided edge in the conference race. lt took an inspired and well-trained Iohnson team to trim the Pilots' sails as the Governors caught the Murray boys in a slump. The surprising Pilot eleven came back looking like professionals to wallop Monroe in what was supposed to be the battle of the year, 20-ll. Scoring early in the Central-Murray game, the Pilots seemed set for an easy victory, but the Minutemen of Cen- tral were determined to stop the championship-bound Pilots. A last minute touchdown saved the game for Murray, and the last barrier, Marshall, was taken in true championship stride. To Minneapolis South lt was Nlurray's day but not Xlurray's score when the Pilots met the Nlinneapolis South Tigers in the Twin City classic November fi. 1947. Fans who wit- nessed the game will neyer forget the quick. suc- cessive thrusts that gave South a two touchdown edge in the First quarter. VVhile Murray fans may have had a few moments of discouragement. the team did not know the mean- ing of defeat. From the lirst quarter on. Nlurray be- gan to make itself known to the Tigers. and the en- tire last half was KIurray's game. Penetrating deep into South's territory. the Pilots were unable to score except for Porky Nlcliroarty who slashed through right guard on a T land-off from Tom Zwiener to score from the 12 yard line. Hard running and hard hitting marked the game as the Murray line did a fine job in stopping South's highly touted runners. No alibis-fumbles as usual were costly-but the score I2-6 only tells half of the story of N'Iurray's gallant stand. Not to be forgotten is the Rooters Club of Mur- ray that added gay color as well as sound effects to a gray November day. Don't we look happy? lust see the smile on Coach fingebretson's face and get a look at Red Nelsonys grin as he proudly shows the places where the missing teeth should be ....
