Social Studies Social Studies is the study of man and his civ- ilization, past and present. There are four courses of study in this subject at Murrah. The first of two phases is world history. The second is the history of our own country. Government and eco- nomic classes discuss more fully the organization of our government, while American History studies the formation or evolution. History is very important. It has become a study of ideas and motives and the people behind them. Without a knowledge of history of America and the world, we would be very poor citizens and have very little understanding of other countries. Mads JL-

'55 rf y 12th grade students discuss Shakespeare's times. English Department All study is dependent on a knowledge and comprehension of the English language. The mechanics of a language are always the most important part, however, the literature expresses the feelings of the people. It is very important to become familiar with the ideas of great writers of the past and fthe present. Many of these writers and their illeiis are studied or touched on 'VZ' during the three year course of study at Murrah. Not only to speak correctly, but to express oneself more precisely is a very important aim of all, and both are emphasized at lVlurrah. Three years of English are required for grad- uation which shows the importance placed upon this subject. Language Department One answer to the troubles of the world today might be found i11 better communication with peo- ple of foreign nations, and a better communication means a more extensive knowledge of foreign languages. High school is the best place to begin a study of languages, and they have become a very important part of the curriculum of Murrah. Three languages are offered at Murrah: Latin, Frenohq and Spanish. Each is no more important than the other, because while Latin is a basic language, French and Spanish are the ones which are used conversationally today. 0 v N sk, tw Marie-Rose Tizon, B.A., Bb French Isabel Johnston.
