Argument Inc. To study, discuss, and debate current problems; to improve speaking ability; to learn and practice proper parliamentary procedure —this is the high aim of Argument Inc. Under the leadership of Mr. E. D. Hudgens, members attended Southwest Ala- bama Discussion Clinic at University Center and held school debates with Bishop Toolen and McGill. Trips were made to Tulane University High School Forensic Tournament and to University of Alabama State Forensic Tournament. Argument Inc. helped to organize Mobile County Forensic Conference and Gulf Coast Forensic Tournament. Mr. Hudgens explains problems of world trade to ardent debaters. Bible Study Club The Bible, greatest book ever written, is the text of more than two hundred Bible Study Club mem- bers. Mrs. Edith Murphy, sponsor, with President Jerry McCollum, Vice-President Jack Merrill, Secre- tary Jody Armbrecht, and Treasurer Marion Mitchi- ner, planned a review of the early history of Jewish people as a preparation for the study of the Taber- nacle. For Christmas the group studied the birth of Christ as the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies. At each meeting members enjoyed a short devotional program of music provided by the Music committee. Mrs. Murphy and officers listen to a hymn before the meeting. Allied Youth At monthly meetings. Allied Youth members held discussions, listened to speakers, or saw films on the harmful effects of alcohol. Co-sponsors Mrs. N. H. Holmes and Mrs. Jefferies, with officers Dede Mc- Donnell, Louis Hanlein, Rose Marie Green, and Vir- ginia Spieth, planned programs to direct the group into more wholesome living. There was a round table discussion on Use and Abuse of Alcohol ; Coach Joe Sharpe spoke on Alcohol and Young People ; and the interesting film Effects of Alcohol on the Human Body was shown. In May, Allied Youth held its annual party. Allied Youth officers work out details for their next progrom.

All Girls’ Council Working with Miss Josephine Hargrove, sponsor. All Girls' Council performed numerous civic and school services. The smoothness with which Career Day was carried out was partially due to behind- the-scenes work of this organization. Members did volunteer work for the Red Cross and telephoned more than eight hundred people during United Fund's Operation Dial . As in many a year before, the group sponsored Christmas baskets; a record- breaking number of boxes and baskets of food and clothes were given to need families by Mur- phy's generous sections. Council officers schedule students for Career Day conferences. D. O. Club An organization to promote better relations among business, the community, and the school is the D. O. Club, composed of the 110 students in the vocational department. D. O. sponsored its usual Toy Drive, collecting 2,500 toys for under-privileged children. Twenty-five delegates went to Livingston for the Southwest District Conference, where they captured top honors in Essay and Mr. D. O. con- tests and placed high in Oratorical, Job Manual and Skit competitions. Fourteen attended State D. O. Convention at Tuscaloosa. The gala Employer- Employee banquet and dance was held in March. President Kenneth and officers consider plans for D. O. Banquet. Key club Key Club, a group of outstanding boys, worked in conjunction with All Girls' Council in tabulating interest sheets for Career Day and in distributing Christmas baskets. Members also collected money for the March of Dimes after school hours and pro- moted the purchase of Murphy's two dual-control cars by getting parents to attend a P. T. A. meeting on safe driving. The Key Club banquet held late in the spring terminated the year's activities under Mr. Greaves, sponsor, and officers Eddie Brockway, Mac McLeod, Stanley Moore, and Richard Holmes. Ever-active Key Club officers give the Cancer Drive a boost. • 109 •

Latin Club With an apple, an ivy wreath, and a quotation from Virgil, new members of the Latin Club were initiated in an impressive formal ceremony; white- robed speakers symbolized the spirit of each year of Latin as they told of Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil. At Christmas, members observed the feast of Satur- nalia. Climaxing the year's activities was a ban- quet modeled after those of old Rome. Noble guests, draped in togas and pallas, were served a typical Roman meal by tunic-clad slaves; and Citi- zen Carol Barbour's humorous adaptation of The Apple of Discord provided part of the entertain- ment. Toga-clad officers initiato a now member with sacred ritual. Spanish Club This club's interest lies south of the border . Miss Bertha Spradlin, sponsor, and officers Marga- ret McFadden, Despina Glyptis, Ellen Haas, and Judy Cowan hoped their senores would gain a better understanding of Spanish culture. With proceeds obtained from a sockhop after the Murphy-Blythe- ville game, the group purchased an album of Span- ish Christmas carols sung by Pedro Vargas. Litho- graphed posters of oil paintings by Juan Reus were bought in connection with the study of Spanish art. A card game—Spanish fish —increased members' vocabularies by using names of animals and occu- pations. Sonoritas look proudly at their now lithographed poster. Allons, enfants de la patrie . . . —thus La Marseillaise summoned French Club members to each meeting, where a French pastry was given as entrance prize. Among the interesting programs were Charles Boyers recording of a prayer by Vol- taire for religious tolerance, the discussion of Mendes-France as Premier of France, and the an- nual Vive I'amour Valentine program. To the State French Club Convention Murphy sent two dele- gates, who secured the election of Murphy as sec- retary for 1956; chief duty of this office is editing Le Petit Courrier , state news letter. Disquos and librettos prepare French Club lor opera Carmen.
