RALPH H MEACHAM
Mr. Meacham, our new and very capable superintend-
ent, has held positions in seven towns other than ours.
This calm but forceful gentleman has shown a great
interest in our school system and continually participates
in improving it.
Mr. Meacham received. his BS. degree form Middle-
hury College and later was aivardd his Master of Edu-
cation at the University of New Hampshire. He con-
tinued his cducation at Cornell and at Boston University.
He also took summer courses at both Syracuse and Har-
vard. His varied interests include such things as sports.
hunting, camping, and photography.
We, the Class of l958, are grateful to him for his
service to the schools of Winchendon.
To the Gages of l958:
Publication of a yearbook is similar to taking an inventory.
It causes reflection on past action and conditions. It helps
stimulate plans for the future.
Those of you who are directly rmonsible for this publica-
tion have obtained a much broader educational training.
Those who read it and those who will have the opportunity
to do similar work will benefit by your efforts. '
We are grateful to all those who gave of their time and
talent that we might have a condensed record of this
school year. f ,
Best Wishes,
Ralph H. Meacham
Superintendent
All who have known Mr. Staples as principal of Mur-
dock know that the gratitude and friendship which the
students feel for him cannot be expressed in mere words.
His genial smile and gentle firmness have earned him
the respect of the student body.
Besides having a pleasing personality, Mr. Staples has
an enviable education. He has a BS. degree from Tufts
College as well as an Ed.lVl. from Harvard, and has
done additional graduate work at Hyannis Teachers,
College.
We, the Class of 1958, thank him for his guidance
and wish him continued good fortune.
To the Class of 1958:
Now that you have completed your high school education,
you will be faced with many perplexing probkams. Those
of you who have prepared yourselves for college know that
competition is keen, but opportunities are greater than ever
before. Even if you do not plan to attend an institution of
higher education, you should not feel that you will be
unable to serve your community. A position of responsi-
bility is always available to the boy or girl who is deter-
mined to succeed.
We, your teachers, who have worked closely with you for
the past three years, hope that, you.will meet the challenge
of the future with resolution and courage. There are many
Murdock graduates of whom we are proud. May you take
your places along with them and make the Class of '58 a
credit to our school.
Sincerely yours,
47

The first thing to do was to elect class officers
We held our first class meeting ln the big study hall

We decided to order our class rlngs now in order to
have two years to wear them before graduation
Then came our Sophomore Hop which was held at
the Clark Memorial Building The audltorlum was dec

were trimmed with yellow roses and off to one side was
a wlshmg well of future success The dance was ln
cabaret style and yellow daffodils decorated the tables
lending a delicate air to the room Thls was a tremen

Each year it is the custom for the graduating class to Inasmuch as we, the Class of 1958, are graduating in
give a few words of advice to the juniors who will carry the Geophysical Year, we feel that we are the first class
on the tradition of Murdock.
to graduate with a clear and sclentlflc outlook tor the
future therefore we are the class best sulted to glVC a
few words of wisdom to the future seniors
The time lS near' Very soon you will be seniors
those people who finally reahze their goal the Class Trip
Of course the first step in planning the trip IS to declde
where to go Now that travel to outer space is a certalney
next year s class will undoubtedly decide on the moon as
a destination
Means of transportation is important Of course since
you will not be able to use Mr Guertm s bus agam next
year you must get started with the help of Mr Properzxo
Next the class must have proper chaperones As SIZC
IS lmportant ln a rocket ship we suggest Miss Carbone as
one for she is small and dainty Mr Russell our sc1
entlst might be another You might need him if any
thing goes wrong with the rocket Heaven forbid'
Another clue to a successful class trip is financial plan
ning We as lofty seniors leave you a few tips on
making money
fll As you will be the first senior class to VlSlt the
moon there IS the question of proper attlre You had
better use some of your class dues for a space suit do it
yourself kit for the latest style ln space wear These can
be sold to all seniors taking the trip
f2l Wlth the help of Mrs Roy devise a compact
package of Moon Ratlons These wlll be needed for
future class trips ln order to create an appetite for them
establish a market at Streeter Cafeteria In no time the
students will be spending all their extra change for this
tasty but
f 31 As everyone knows all parents would like to know
what Johnny is doing on the class trlp Do not overlook
this possibility Your class can sell telescopes to the
parents so that they may watch their little darlings on
clear nights
I4 The students must get used to the extreme speeds
with Mr Cilmartln as instructor He w1ll teach speed
endurance ln ten easy lessons by driving students ln and
around Murdock at noontlme and after school
If you follow our good advice we know you will win
fame and fortune and be the first class to plant the blue
and white of Murdock on the moon
We the Class of 58 promise to be here ln a body to
see you launched from Murdock Tower in the spring
of 1959

Sung to the tune of "Moulin Rougel'
We're leaving you nowg
Our school days are over.
The times that welve shared
Will always be dear.
We give our deep thanks
To all our dear teachers
We re grateful to them
For the work they have done
As we look back upon those days
When we enjoyed ourselves sO well
Our lives then were frlled with joy
Such memories only we can tell
Good bye to our friends,
Good bye to our classmates
We re starting anew
With hearts brave and true
It s a sad thrng to realrze
That days of old have passed us by
Can we guess what the future holds
Or must we look up to the sky
Vlfherever we roam
Your name we ll remember
We re leaving you now,
Our Dear Murdock High

TEACHERS' FAVORITE SAYINGS
Haven't you been brought up with any common
courtesy?
And furthermore . . .!
Sh-h-h-hg quietg get to work.
Any questions? Well, I heard a good one yes-
terday.
There are always a couple of "wise-guys."
I've got news for you!
But it's not important anyway.
Yes, you may have a lunch ticket.
Turn around! Stop your talking.
. . . ALSO . . .
"Smile-."
Okay-one-two-treee-four.
Sh-h-h!
Keep your head down and you won't get hurt

Sedan! Song
Victory Song
There's a school in this town called Murdockg
And her sons and daughters, too,
Are all the true supporters
Of her glorious Wliite and Blue.
And whene,er her sons are fighting
And would rather die than yield,
You can hear the school that backs them up
Co singing down the field . . .
CHORUS
Oh Murdock, dear Murdock, we sing to youg
Lead on to vicfry 'neath the Wllite and Blue.
Oh Vlurdock, dear Murdock, firm as a rock,
Give us a cheer-rah! rah!
Give us a cheer-rahl rah!
Cheer for our Murdock: fRepeatj

RICHARD H. PORTER
Coach Richard Porter, a graduate of Fitchburg
State Teachers College, has been assistant football
coach at Murdock since 1950. ln addition to this,
he is baseball coach for the junior high school and
has been a mathematics teacher at Murdock since
1951.
Mr. Porter has done a great deal to promote
sportsmanship and school spirit. The Class of '58
is grateful to him for his fine work and wish him
continued success.
WARREN N. BENTLEY
Coach Warren Bentley, a graduate of Springfield
College, has been director of physical education in
the Winchendon schools since September, 1945. In
addition to his duties as coach of varsity football
and baseball, he also conducts classes in physical
education for all pupils in grammar schools, junior
high, and high school.
Mr. Bentley, in spite of the poor system of phys-
ical education in Winchendon, has never turned out
a bad team at Murdock. In fact, he has coached
two championship teams in a period of four years-
one in baseball in 1954, and one in football during
our senior year.
We, the Class of 1958, extend to him our deepest
appreciation for a job well done.
