Pierce has taught printing at Central High School. Under his direction the print shop on the first floor is one of the busiest spots in the school, especially since the addition of the new linotype. Une of our most loyal Centralites, Mr. Pierce also claims the distinction of being the leader of the only band to play at the finals of the IHSAA basketball tournament in Indianapolis. During his first year at Central, he was also band instructor and it was this group under his direction that played for the big event. After that, no bands were permitted since every school wanted to bring its own band. For his long years of faithful service to Cen- tral, for his loyalty and friendly spirit of cooper- ation, we proudly dedicate this 1951 Magician to Mr. Pierce. It was a great victory for Coach Recliner, who had emphasized team- work, ball control. and a tight defense to replace the Cats, decided lack of height. It all began back last October, when the Cats started their long grind which lasted for more than five months. The Purple and Wvhite scored nine straight victories before losing their first to powerful Marion. Muncie Central bounced back to nip highly-rated Lafayette and South Bend on successive nights. Four teams out of more than 750 were ready to prove they were the best. That is where our Bearcats came through! Operating like a machine, Central upset Lafayette, 51-54, and then went on to down a fighting Evansville team, 60-58, in one of the most exciting finishes in state tournament history. Charlie Nlockls fielder with five seconds remaining gave Muncie Central the title. When the prized trophy was to be presented, the five seniorsfffharlie Mock, Tom Harrold, Jim Mace, Bruce lienhow, and Charlie Ross--stepped forward to accept the reward. The Muncie speedsters got off to a flying start by defeating powerful Anderson for the first time in thirteen years. The score was 62-47. The Cats also won their second meet by a score of 58-51.
