R D Shaffer principal of Central High School
Miss Bertha Arbogast financial clerk and secretary to the principal
Just as World War II dominates the life of the entire world today so does
it make itself felt in the classrooms and halls of Central High now geared o
a wartime program The frequent sight of our classmates now in uniform
returning for 1 visit to Central makes us all determined to do our share on the
home front We of Central High will work with this spirit until war ends and
peace once again rules the world
One of the most important adjustments made at Central this year has been
the new schedule for classes providing seven recitation study periods of one hour
each This arrangement has made it possible for students to do both their
school work and their jobs in offices stores and factories where they are of vital
need in meeting the manpower shortage lt also permits students who wish to
do so to accelerate their programs in order to complete their work at an earlier
Changes in courses have also been made this year two new ones being of
enrolled in nutrition classes meeting three days a week alternatmg with the
physical education classes This work offered by the city schools and the Red
Cross is part of the school s physical fitness program It is designed to familiar
IIL girls with buying and preparing foods as well as with bodily needs in food
Students may be awarded Red Cross certificates in nutrition at the completion of
The other course is one in related mathematics and science given at the
Trade School for all students enrolled in vocational drafting electricity ma
chine shop auto mechanics and carpentry The course extending over junior
and senior years presents scientific and mathematxcal information of benefit to
those enrolled in the vocational Held Class periods are eighty minutes tn length
with two groups alternatmg each nine weeks for two and three periods per week
The faculty of Central High has been touched by the war too for several
of our teachers are now in service with the armed forces Melvin Wilson bas
