Principal R D Shaffer principal of Central High School Miss Bertha Arbogast financial clerk and secretary to the principal INTRODUCTION Just as World War II dominates the life of the entire world today so does it make itself felt in the classrooms and halls of Central High now geared o a wartime program The frequent sight of our classmates now in uniform returning for 1 visit to Central makes us all determined to do our share on the home front We of Central High will work with this spirit until war ends and peace once again rules the world One of the most important adjustments made at Central this year has been the new schedule for classes providing seven recitation study periods of one hour each This arrangement has made it possible for students to do both their school work and their jobs in offices stores and factories where they are of vital need in meeting the manpower shortage lt also permits students who wish to do so to accelerate their programs in order to complete their work at an earlier are Changes in courses have also been made this year two new ones being of enrolled in nutrition classes meeting three days a week alternatmg with the physical education classes This work offered by the city schools and the Red Cross is part of the school s physical fitness program It is designed to familiar IIL girls with buying and preparing foods as well as with bodily needs in food Students may be awarded Red Cross certificates in nutrition at the completion of this course The other course is one in related mathematics and science given at the Trade School for all students enrolled in vocational drafting electricity ma chine shop auto mechanics and carpentry The course extending over junior and senior years presents scientific and mathematxcal information of benefit to those enrolled in the vocational Held Class periods are eighty minutes tn length with two groups alternatmg each nine weeks for two and three periods per week The faculty of Central High has been touched by the war too for several of our teachers are now in service with the armed forces Melvin Wilson bas . . l i 1 1 H . At the e X 1 x ell Max Cox Dick Anderson Ken Quite Marxrn llfer Harold Sulkey Bob Kuhns Lak ? -yfbdgi Jaek Snyder hotter than a four alarm blaze led the team to a whirlwind victory over Jeff of l afayette on January Zl by scoring I9 of the 48 made by the Cats Flhe final score was 48 to 40 His teammates werent far behind Jack for in that game nobody missed any foul shots This amazing accuracy kept our warriors on even terms in the nrst two periods when Jeff exhibited keen determination to win Long awaited revenge was given to the Bearcats on January 25 when the Burris Owls l937 the west side school was on the losing end of a Bearcat Burris score the final figures be ing 41 to 36 Central s Big Ten lead was lost on January 28 when Anderson scalped the Bearcats by a 57 to 38 count The Big Green of Indianapolis 'Iech was no match for the February 4 en counter for the locals won 39 29 This was the fourteenth victory against three setbacks The fourth loss of the season came seven days later on February l l the day the team went to New Castle The Trojans avenged their earlier defeat by slaughtering the Bearcats 67 to 36 On February 15 the Central squad had llttle difficulty in turning back the Alexandria quintet 59 40 The Cats fast breaking offensive allowed Jim Carey to lead in scoring with l6 points Qurre and Friend each scored I3 tallies The season was brought to a successful close by a win over Richmond on February 18 the score read1ng 46 to 26 The Cats entered the sectional tourney with hopes of scoring a win but after turning back Yorktown 43 28 and Gaston 45 24 the boys lost the final game to their old rival Burris The score was 40 to 19 The 1044 Maqlczan X F Q . 1 X 'tfx i A l , ' I V I , 'd I' I I I , I .' Tom Hughes THE MUNSON IAN Wartime shortages in manpower and material were responsible for fewer issues of The Munsomun this year since the school paper was published every two weeks instead of weekly But it continued to report the news of the school and to carry columns of information about former Centralites now in service In addition to the numbers published at the beginning of the fall and win ter terms vshich carry all information about enrollment procedure the staff was responsible for several special editions during the year Among them were the Christmas and the tournament numbers The latin American edition published April 7 was the first to be done here lt contained sketches articles and other information concerning our other American neighbors Students interested in working on the staff of the school paper report the previous term for newswriting tests Those who pass the test are enrolled in the newswriting class which offers one half credit Following one term in classwork students are named to staff positions for which they receive one half credit for one semester 'I he editor is annually chosen by the staff and sponsor Members of The Munsoman staff attended the annual convention of the lndiana High School Press Association held October 2l and 22 at Franklin College Naomi Fisher was elected a member of the executive board of the assoeiation Others attending the convention were Phyllis Kaiser Viola Burk ett Fvelyn Williams Ed Maloney and Miss Meehan Ihe IU44 lxlllllllL1ilU7 81 V5 left to right Violetta Fngelbrecht business manager Agnes Gray Margie Jackson co editors THE MAGICIAN Pictures of the Maazczan staff members do not really depict them in their proper state because by the time the final copy was in most of them had worked their heads off For this book is the result of hours weeks even months of effort on the part of a number of Cen tralites Wartime shortages also made the work more difficult this year The editorial staff was ably directed bv Pgnes Gray and Margie Jackson co editors who worked long hours to do all the scheduling checking and rechecking necessary to publish this book Violetta Fngelbrecht as busmess manager spent an equal number of hours checking sales advertising and budget Her assistant was Saralee Dunn.
