Future Homemakers of a America and its counterpart, HERO-Home Ec. Related Occupations, are striving across the U.S. to help young men and women make better lives for them and their families. To raise money, our members worked in concessions at ballgames, sold cookbooks and valentine cookies to help others play a big role in an organization such as ours. To show our concern for the 1979 Year of the Child, members gave Halloween and Christmas programs for pre- school children in the community. The FHA worked at the Bloodmo- bile in January and gave the proceeds from their valentine cookie sale to the American Heart Association. The state meeting at Topeka, Hospitality Day at KSU, and summer camp provided us all chances to meet new people and to learn ideas for next year. Debbie Crosley y Members; standing L to R: M. Craig Hughes, head coach ; Pam Wells, Jamie Baumgartner, Cindi Lawless, Kristi Lawless, Cathy Spain, Tracey Robberson Hughes Reflects On Season Gaining experience is what this season was all about for Coach Craig Hughes ' Mulvane Wildcats. " There ' s no replacement for experience, " said Hughes. " That was one of the things I was most pleased about this football season. " The first-year Wildcat football coach reflected on a season which saw only two victories in eight games, both wins coming in the final three games of the year. " But I was most happy about the experience we gained. We feel like we have some backfield experience returning, except at quarterback, and next year, all we need to find is some lineman. " Senior Kevin Baca paced the offense, rushing for 543 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Junior Jeff Runyan was second-leading rusher with 63 yards, followed by senior Steve Swayne with 61 and Bill Caldwell with 57. Senior quarterback Troy Phillips passed for 374 yards, hitting 32 of 69 for Mulvane. while in the receiving department, seniors Rick Baker and Ed Nelson were one-two. Baker caught 1 1 passes for 1 5 1 yards and Nelson was next with seven catches for 117. Third was Scott Snow, a junior, who caught six passes for 101 yards. Sophomore Vic Marcelle. the club ' s punter, booted the ball 40 times for a 34-yard average — good enough to be selected to the Chisholm Trail League ' s All-League first team. Jeff Ashby was named honor- able mention as defensive end. (attached-about season) Top Row: T. Crow, G. Former, J. Unger, J. Ashby, E. Kerley, T. Warren, K. Lawless, J. Giles, J. Armstrong, J. This team worked very hard, throughout the sea- son, to achieve their personal and team goals. We matured, as a team, as the season progressed. High- lights of our season included: a defeat of the league ' s number one team, two all league players, first place in the 5-A sub-state and our spot in the state tourna- ment. We suffered some disappointments during the sea- son, but that was overshadowed by our many achieve- ments. It was a season of close games, losing to state champ Kingman by 8 points, to beating a fine Valley Center team in the high game of the season, 76-66. Mulvane ' s record was 7-11. It was the best regular season record since 1971. The wildcats led the Chisholm Trail League in rebounding, averag- ing 37.7 rebounds per game. They were second in scoring, 62 points per game. Mark Storey was selected ALL TOURNAMENT at the Chaparral Invitational. Girls ' Basketball Had An ' Outstanding Season! Our basketball team enjoyed an excellent 1979-80 season, win- ning 10 and losing 8. Four victories came on successful last second shots which is a strong indication of the desire and determination of this particular group. Their aggressive play throughout the season earned the respect of their opponents. There were many highlights of the season including an overtime win over Valley Center, a last second win over Andover and a BIG victory over Goddard. Individually, Sandy Whetstone established a new school scoring record, and Denise Standerfer set a new record in rebounding. The contribution of our seniors Shelley Gerlach, Cindi Lawless, Denise Standerfer and Sandy Whetstone will always be rememberd. V :- Bill W, Brown Coach front row; S. Heatley, C. Rogers, S. Boys ' Track Enjoys A Successful Season The boy ' s track team, coached by David Hall and Marvin Jelinek, had a good year with 33 capable boys out. The seniors, juniors and sophomores worked hard all year long, winning the Andover Invitational and placing well in several other meets. Mark Storey was an outstanding hurdler and high jumper and Steve Swayne was an excellent half and quarter miler. The two mile relay (Eric Sims, Brad Bohannon, Steve and Jeff Swayne) placed third in the regional which qualified them for state. Next season should also be good since we have good young talent coming up. B. Cotton, J. Swayne, K. Lawless, V. Marcelle, J. Beldon, B. Bohannon, M. Ward, J. The girls have finished in the top three every meet this season, won the CTL championship, finished second in the 5A regional, and qualified sev- en for the state outdoor championship. They brought home three medals from the state track meet. Debbie Rich got sixth in high jump and Denise Standerfer got second in shot put and fifth in the discus.
