20 Whitney Metal Shop Named State Model Program Although the industrial arts classes are usually not thought to be as academically demanding as some other classes on campus, a visit to the shop area on Mt. Whitney's campus can con- vince the observer to think otherwise. Mt. Whitney's Metal Shop is one example of this situation. This program, instructed by Craig Wight since 1974, has undergone some exciting changes in the past few years. The input of lottery funds has enabled the Metal Shop to purchase more modern, computerized equip- ment which the students are now using. Other new equipment was added when the shop was selected as a Model Program by the State Board of Education. This resulted in a S150,000 grant that has allowed the Metal Shop to pur- chase a variety of new equipment. Whitney's Metal Shop has received state recog- nition, as last year they took first place in regional competition for welding and sheet metal, and seventh in the state for machining. A variety of proiects are worked on in the class. One of the more unusual projects this year is model airplane engines. Ned Al-Askari 7 ' is ' s 3 ys 'K Math ' - - - is E. nf t .
