Vice President: Luke McDonnell. Treasurer. George Wargo. Seated: Robert Hancock. Adolph Cuzevich. President: Albert Zelinski, Secretary. The Mount Carmel Joint School System, comprised of the School Districts of the Borough and Township of Mount Carmel, was formed on September 28, 1951, in accordance with the provisions of the 6'Public School Code of 1949" for the purpose of furnishing the best possible educational opportunities for the school children of both districts, it being recognized that this could be accomplished more efficiently and more economically by the establishment of a Joint School System. The ,lointure covers all grades from the Kindergarten to the Senior High School. Under the terms of the agreement all affairs of the Joint School System are delegated to a Joint School Committee composed of five School Directors from Mount Carmel Borough and two School Directors from Mount Carmel Township. All operating costs are shared by the respective districts on a pro-rata basis in proportion to the Average Daily Membership of children attending the schools from each of the districts. Cur- rently there are 1,341 Borough children enrolled and 489 Township children. The Superintendent of Schools of Mount Carmel Borough is the Administrator of the ,loint School System. When we the class of "SS" came to the Senior High School the first thing we en- countered was initiation. We got over it with some fright but all in all it was fun. Also in our sophomore year we held a Christmas Card Campaign. The first dance we held was the Valentineis Dance in February of 1953, and was well attended. Before we realized it, it was the end of the year and we would be coming back as Juniors. During the early part of our Junior year we held the annual magazine campaign. The dance in our Junior year was the Mistletoe Dance on the 18th of December. The main event in our Junior year was the Prom for the Seniors. For this event, we used the Gym also. lt was decorated gaily and the orchestra seemed to play its best. The highlight of that night was the crowning of the queen of the Prom. She was crowned by last year's queen. HOMEROOM 201 ev- ii '-vi GIRLS-Seated: Marianne llnltralik. Bliss Elizabeth Howard. Standing: Beverly Bradisli. lean Brosius. Carol Ann Casper, joan Butts. Miss Catherine Scicchitano. Standing: Diane Matslro, Treasurerg Thomas Revak, Presidentg Dorothy Oliver Secretary. After Old Sol gave the class of 1956 a very hot reception, they prepared for a hectic initiation day. We are proud that we had such a commendable initiation and would not mind reliving it again. After we were complimented on the initiation day, the class started on the Christ- mas Card campaign. We found it ended successfully and are very pleased that the en- tire class took an active part in it. We wish to thank Miss Catherine Scicchitano and Mr. Charles Boleske for their wonderful and generous supervision. Our first year in senior high school will always remain with us as a pleasant memory and we are looking forward to our Junior year. 9 HOMEROOM 307 GIRLS-Seated: Xfargafel Dobson, Barbara Dnbgon, Nfarian Sialldillgi Bafbafa CalVf'I't'Si, Dallabrida, Rose Dem- Day, Nancy Barrett, Elaine Ammatura, Theresa DeN'Iarco, broske, Marcia Brosh, Loretta Coyne, Mary Bulka, Con- Cecelia Dubits, Patricia Bogovich, Bliss H. The Red Tornadoes' 1953 football season was inaugurated by defeats from Coal Township 420-Ol. Tamaqua 126-123, Mahanoy City 112-Tl, and Berwick 135-211. Then the Tornadoes got hot by trouncing Kulpmont 140-Tl, and defeating Shenan- doah 121-Ol. The next week, however. they were bumped off by Pottsville 135-121. Determination and will-to-win told the story as Mt. Carmel came back in the last quarter to dump Ashland 134-149. But Sunbury 418-131 and Hazelton 418-71 proved too much for the Tornadoes. The last game of the season told the story. After a determined Shamokin team took a 13-0 lead at halftime, it appeared that the cause was los. But the second half proved fatal for Shamokin as the Tornadoes tallied 13 points to tie. The Senior members of the squad. who are departing, hope that next year's team will give Mt. Carmel High School and its fans something to cheer about. ,w-' IHZZOLI ,R ' TROYAN i .1 x ' Q x , CHEDDAR W W F' BASKETBALL TEAM 'nw M .7 , ,M at X, Q, f 5, A R fy , 1 i ill fl' 'il A' A s li s W' A Q ,H .i .QL Q 1 lt .t ,. .
