The Red Tornadoes' 1951 football season was inaugurated by a defeat from the State Champions of 1950, the Purple Demons of Coal Township. The boys then proceeded to lose two close ones to Tamaqua and Mahanoy City. Undefeated Berwick and likewise unbeaten Kulpmont both licked Mt. Carmel after rough struggles. Then the Terrymcn romped over Shenandoah 25-0, for their first victory of the year. The next week, how- ever, they were bumped off by Pottsville, Southern Division title-holders. The Tornadoes played their best game of the year in beating Ashland 19-7. Going into the last five minutes of play, they trailed 7-O. But determination and will-to-win told the story as Mt. Carmel rallied for three quick touchdowns to achieve a sensational victory. Hazleton and Sunbury were two teams who had little trouble with the Tornadoes. On Thanskgiving Day, the Red Tornadoes bowed to the Shamokin Greyhounds 13-0 on a bleak and gloomy day. The senior members of the squad depart with hopes that next year's team will give Mt. Carmel High School and its faithful rooters something to really cheer about. With Coach Breslin again at the head, the track and field team of Mount Carmel High School more than held its own against the stiffest competition this section of the State had to offer. The mile relay quartet came in fifth at the Penn Relays, after which the squad triumphed over Hazleton in a dual meet. With many lettermen returning, the team should look forward to another successful season. The Red and White drib- blers, when they were "on," proved unbeatableg however, in some games the boys faced state-wide powers, such as unbeaten Ashland, Coal Township, and Shamokin.
