The Forty-Niners
One hundred years ago many a hardy adventurer was packing
nis gear, preparing to take part in the great gold rush of 1849. Now,
100 years later, we of the class of '49 are busy packing our gear to
participate in another great rush. We will find as much peril and
adventure as our ancestorsl did in 1849. Not many of us will find gold
in our search, but gold is subordinate to something far more satisfying
and lasting-perfection.
We will have to dig hard and deep for that, too, but we have
spent our schooldays arming ourselves with the implements We will
need. The pioneers of 1849 were never so well equipped.
The traveler of 1849 had to trust to chance on his journey
through the wilderness, he had no map to help him. In school we have
plotted our maps, carefully eliminating the detours. Each day saw a
clarity added to it that any '49er will find easy to follow.
'Our Leader-God . . . " The pioneer of 1849 had no leader,
no guide, except the eager beckoning of fame and fortune. He soon
found that this fickle guide too often misled him. We have found a
far more dependable Guide - God.
Our Aim-Perfection." Our "financiers", the administration,
have taught us the value of perfection, and what is more, how to dis-
tinguish it from the "fool's gold" which so often led the pioneer to his
destruction. Too late the poor prospector discovered his prized "strike"
was only a piece of worthless yellow rock. Let us hope we have learn-
ed to recognize the genuine, always.
We the "prospectors" of 1949 owe much to our counterparts of
18495 they have given us an example of initiative and perseverance
which will help us immensely. Surely, with our maps, our equipment,
and such an excellent Guide, our mission will terminate in a success
far above the successes of any '49er.

In the past three years we, the class of 1949, have
spent the better part of our lives in our Alma Mater. We
have tried to present here a picture of our school life as
we have lived it. We hope-, in the future, that this book
will recapture the memories of our friendships, hard-
ships, and the pleasantries that are a part of everyone's
school days.
In later life, if you can recall again the spirit of com-
radeship and loyalty that has distinguished these three
yefars as the best of our lives, this book has served its
purpose.

A SEN IOR'S FAREWELL
..1....
Classmates 'tis the time for us to part,
Leaving High School days behind,
May: our'memories forever stay,
Though we're leaving school to find
All the goals that we must reach
And ideals held so high.
Alma Mater 'tis with much regret
That we say to you good-bye.
- 2 -
Thanks to all who helped us on our way,
Sharing joy and happiness,
Being helpful as true friends and pals,
Making all our cares seem less.
And to you, our dear old school-mates,
You've made all these years seem swell.
Class of '49, with heavy heart
Bids to you a fond farewell.
Words by-Gloria Montello

Terry, Coach.
Ushering in the 1948 season with a series of impressive victories,
the M. C. H. S. football squad seemed to have everything any coach
could wish for. Defeating such teams as Tamaqua, Mahanoy City,
Mount Carmel Township, Coal Township, and Kulpmont, the Red Tor-
nadoes were riding high when they chose a most inopportune time to ll 9.5" ft?
err and stumble before an inspired Ashland foe.
The road to come back was not easyg and though we succeeded ,saga J
in defeating Hazleton, we were again to fall before a spunky Sunbury
eleven. Dame Fortune smiled through, however, and capped the season 1, f l' gg?
with a triumphant 25 to 0 victory over our traditional rivals, the Grey- "sf 4'
hounds of Shamokin. 5

With the curtain drawn and gridiron glory in evidence, with an
execellent record to look back on, and with fine material for the future,
the students of lVl. C. H. S. can Well be proud of the achievements of
both the coach and the team. ,

With the guiding of Coach
Breslin to show the way, Mount Car-
mel's 1948 track team turned in a most impressive record. With fast,
well conditioned athletes, the squad was able to set the pace and take 5 KE il
finals in many events. An outstanding mark has been set by this 'team I 'X Ng!
and those of the future will have to be at their best to equal the achieve- ,fi F

Opening the season on their home court
with a nip and tuck 49-50 victory over Gi-
rardville, the M. C, H. S. cagers went on to
compile an excellent record of 13 wins and 11
losses in a series of thrill packed games. In
playing what is perhaps one of the fastest
sports on record, the one that calls on Cu-
operation, level-headedness, and team-work,
Coach Menges and his quintette have suc-
ceeded in setting a high standard that should
be both an inspiration and a challenge to
Varsity teams of the future.

The Jr. Varsity basketball squad under
the able direction of Coach Joseph Paskevich
has compiled one of the most enviable rec-
ords in High's f'understudy" League. Though
little attention is paid to these players, it
must be remembered that the JV's of today
are the Varsity of tomorrowg and the skill
and teamwork learned now will be turn-ed
into victories of the future. The J. V. team
won the Keystone League Junior Varsity
championship.
