Our build- ings and grounds have been relinished and re- furnished. Our school is again united on one campus. Our school spirit and general morale are high. And we have a student union, "The Eagle's Nest," which will serve a most useful and worth- ' while purpose at this school. We are appreciative of the Hne facilities that have been provided at our high school. I wondered at the time if I would ever get here. California seemed so far away from Sydney Australia - but here I am, thanks to your wonder- ful support of the A.F.S. program. I am very proud and happy to be a member of your student body. Through your efforts in raising money and helping me to learn about your way of life you have succeeded in making this the most won- derful year of my life and the most interesting. It is hard to believe that it is all over, the pizzas after football games, the plays, variety shows, rushing to and from speeches and classes, and everything else that went to make up a year that I will always remember. My hope is that I do know all of you, even if it was only to say "hi." Thank you everybody, my family, friends, teachers, and student body. One last requestg if any of you ever come "down undern please come and visit me. ,CCLG EXCHANGE STUDE All of you will have to go to Norway someday soon, then you will know why I have much to be grateful for. A million memories will always remind me that it was each of you who made my 14,000 mile Norwegian ad- venture possibleg from that early A.M. in June when my jet took off, to the last afternoon on board ship when there were so many tears I could hardly see the Statue of Liberty. Eventually the times - like when I scaled my first and last mountain, and milked my first cow will be shelved away, though not forgotten. But what will always stand out in my memories will be all of the people. I can't even begin to count all the dear people I met, nor could I forget them. "Tusen takk" is said in Norway g here it is "thank you." To lvlountain View High, to American Field Service, and to Mr. Stephen Galatti, I say both thank you and "tusen takk" very much. v 4 . Mimi Kiyomura 344 To attend California Girls' 'State is to experience a truly memorable and exciting week - 521 girls' met for the first time on a Monday. And only one short week lat- er we had organized complete city, county, and state gov- ernments. In that week many activities took place - we cam- paigned for candidates, held political rallies and elec- tions, and actually organized a working government. I learned much about the intricacies of our democratic system of government and began to understand why poli- tics is such a fascinating aspect of our democracy. But the American Legion Auxiliary, in sponsoring Girls, State, has a purpose in mind other than simply teaching us about the workings of a democratic government. It is, in the words of the Girls, State promise, "to endeavor to promote and perpetuate true brotherhood and democ- racyff I only wish more people could experience such an unforgettable week - perhaps then the world's problems Anne Engberg GIRL 7 could be solved. TATE PRE IDE The Student Council has become an important part of ' every high school curriculum. It enables students to not on- ly realize the value of our democratic form of government, but to actually participate in a functioning example of it. It is through this student government that the students of to- day are molded into the free thinking citizens of tomorrow. The California Association of Student Councils is an or- ganization which was created to unite the student councils of this state. During the past year I was fortunate enough to serve as President of District No. 7. It was particularly re- warding because it gave me an opportunity to work with the student body presidents of the 25 schools in my district in an effort to make the Student Council a more effective voice of the students.
