W A X f 1 A .- ,,,o, I 5 tv F 9 cgi ' , Y' if Y- I' F ., , , . qv-Im: - , THE HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN GROVE HIGH SCHOOL Iam the spirit of Mounta1n Grove High School I am 93 years old but I am not dead for my sp1r1t will 11ve on as long as there remains a high school in Mountain Grove I am here to tell you the history of this HISIIIUIIOTI of learning so all lend me your undivided attention and I will try to pass on to you the history of your school as I saw It You the students of Mountain Grove in the year 49 50 are fortunate When the school was first bullt in 1857 it was called an Academy It was only a small wood en structure with uncomfortable wooden chairs and desks but the students then thought lt was as magnificent and modern as your present brick bu1ld1ngs and comfortable class rooms There were so few books that many students were not able to take the subjects they wanted because they could not obtain a book In 1880 Mountain Grove had a new building because the title of the Academy got 1nto private hands On the very spot where the big white barn now stands on the Oscar Headley place in North Town was built a large two room school By 1887 the Mountain Grove school district was formed and a new public school bu1ld1ng was erected about two blocks north of the present city square Since that t1me the school has been conducted as a d1str1ct school The first term of school in the new bu1ld1ng was held in 1887 and 1888 There were 262 pupils of whom 228 attended regularly S500 tuition was paid into the d1str1ct treasury by students outside graduation class 1n Mountain Grove had three members the second had one and the class had ten members I see that MGHS has become a very athletic minded school so here are a few facts concerning athletics which should interest you In 1909 basketball was lntroduced as an activity to MGHS In 1910 tenn1s and track were also added 1912 brought the sport of football as an extra curricular subject QI congrat ulate you on your fine work in upholding this sport I The year 1915 saw a new gym nasium built for basketball In 1935 a new Junior High School Building with gym combined was erected just north of the old Senior High Building Today many buildings stand on the back campus as proof of great progress These are a new modern cafeteria an Agriculture building a music building and an Industrial Arts bu1ld1ng Well my young aud1ence that pretty well covers the most important events of my life and the life of Mountain Grove High School but as I have told you in the beg1n ning the Spirit of Mounta1n Grove High School does not die I have followed you through mety three years of progress and I shall remain through the years of educational vancement I foresee in Mountain Grove H1gh Schoo1's future of the district and also bv students in the district who were above school age.
