VIETNAM STUDENTS AND FACUIIY VOICE OPINIONS DRAFT CARD CONTROVERSY The year is 1965. The setting is New York, Boston, or Los Angeles, a college campus, a busy street, or a selective service center. The plot is one that is endangering Amerlca'spositlon as a leader in the fight for democracy. lt seems that we Americans have found a unique way to let the rest of the world know that we don't like the way our country is being run. Signs, sit-ins, and picketing have faded out in the wake of more recent techniques such as draft card burning and self burn- ing, which, by the way, is becoming increasingly popular. From the hallowed halls of' Harvard to the boisterous corri- dors of Berkeley, our fellow colleglans have seen fit to express their personal opinions on Vietnam for better or for worse. Not to be outdone in this venture, the students and faculty at Mount- Wachusett have a few opinions which are expressed ina slightly less violent way than those of some of their associates, A survey was conducted at this college. The response was over- whelmingly against the burning of draft cards and supported, for the most part, President Johnson's policy in Vietnam. Here are some of the views expressed: "As a former serviceman, lam against it completely. We should be proud to serve our country." Brian B. '66 "Burning draft cards is ridiculous. If these individuals are so brave, send them to Vietnam, We should be proud to serve our country, not be against it." Bruce Whitney '66 "lt's a disgrace, Pm completely against it." Prof. Lopriore "I think they should draft everyone who burned his card," Donald Lacouture '67 "Dlsg'ustlng and totally un-American." Peter Bubon '67 "Let's face it, nobody likes going to Vietnam, but if we don't, who will?" James Grautski '67 "A mark of irresponsible adolescence." Prof. Barnett These are only mmples of the opinions of your friends, But no one has a better right to express his opinion than the soldier him- self. Reports have come hack from Vietnam telling of the soldiers' disgust at the attitude of the American people. One typical G,I, wrote a letter to his family after hearing of the cross-country demonstrations. In the letter, he summed up his opinion in a concise sentence: "I feel that if we stop fighting for democracy, it will be the be- ginning of the end.
