USS MOUNT VERNON (LSD-39) I ' SS MOl ' NT VERNON (LSD-3y ) is the fiHli ship commissioned the L ' nitcd Stales Navy to bear the pR)ud name MOUNT VERNON. Built in Quincy. Massachusetts. MOUNT VERNON ' S keel was laid in Januiu ' 1 910 and constioiction was completed in April 1 97 1 . Following commissioning ceremonies on May 1 3. 1972. at Boston Naval Shipyard, the ship sailed for its designated homeport of San Diego. California. ia South America and the Strait of Magellan, joining the Pacific I ' leet amphibious forces and Amphibious Sc|uadron I ' lVH on August 14. 1972. MOUNT VERNON ' S SHIELD The shield is symbolic of the MOUNT VERNON ' S important role in supporting our nation ' s defense. The large triangle represents MOUNT VERNON after discharging three l.CU ' s. denoted b three small triangles. The area betu een the gaffed embattled lines is know n in heraldn, as the fields of combat and is shown as a field of red. The LCU ' s, our main element of combaf ' . cross the field of combat and spearhead the amphibious assualt of a hostile, foreign shore. The symbol also displays the traditional Navy colors of blue and gold. In the upper right hand corner o the shield stands the ancient m thical sea dog. on of the original amphibians, symboli ing the MOUNT VERNON ' S amphibious tradition. The four stars, two on either side of the ship ' s name, commemorate the e. emplar ser ice of the four previous U.S. Navy ships named MOUNT VERNON. They ser ed from the Ci il War through Worid Wars I and II to face the conflicts and challenges of lixlay. MOUNT VERNO.N ' S motto. ' A77 s lutaprohai, is taken directl trom the (ieorge Washington famil coat of amis. This is also the motto of Cieorge Washington ' s home. Mount Venion. after which the ship was named. E.xiltis cuin prolnit means action produces results.
