Deck Department lt takes a lot of people to run a modern amphibious ship. Steam plants, electronicgadgq and modern weapons have changed many of the skills required in the days of sailing mips Nevertheless, many skills and needs remain almost unchanged. Skilled linehandlgg' experts in cargo storage, able handlers of small boats, and men dedicated pg preservation of the ship are still very much in demand. Working under all sorts of conditions, hot sun, sweltering heat, rain and darkness, often shorthanded, the deck force, like the old saying, always came through There were some long hours at sea detaiI,or shifting cargo, moving equipment, or standing bridge watches In spite of all that, there were decks to paint, boats to main1ain,and dozens of other tasks to finish yesterday. The men of deck department really earned their pay dump 4 2 this deployment. And while they were at ir, tht 5 gunners mates showed that they could be very good 6 S marksmen as well, even shooting several ww sleeves out of the air during air gunnery UIOOH' 1X .. eh - t 1 4 0 4 , ' ' Q do 5 L 1
