. fre ""?r'zff'R'ET - L. J .3 H ,, , X 4+ Mimiixfwihbimzgi QS! LES MEMOIRS MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL MouNT VERNQN, noWA I958 A busy year has taken place within the walls of M.V.H.S. Yes, 1958 has been wonderful. It was productive for each student, and equally rewarding for each teacher. This constant deluge of acti- vity didn't start on the first day of school. lt went on all summer as well, for when the doors were opened this fall, the students were greeted with a new Home Economics room. The luster of this lovely new room could be matched only by the smile on Mrs. Colon's face as she met her first classes of a very eventful year. The school year started off with a bang! Football season! This was one of the most wonderful times in our busy year. The Homecoming celebration was perhaps the most magic evening for the M.V.H.S. stu- dents, especially for Queen Linda and her court. lt was truly a never-to-be-forgotten night for everyone there. Do you remember the minstrel show that the great men of the "M" Club pro- duced? The senior girls really tried to do as well with their Salvation Army skit, but, even with all the air that Midge blew through that big bass horn, it just didn't go over! bed. The highlight of the year, of course, was that wonder- ful addition to our trophy case. Mt. Vernon was the con- ference champ, and we went to many extremes to show our pride. Many celebrations were held fboth in and out of school! and for the first time in the history of the school, an afternoon was spent in the gym indulging in our favorite activity, dancing to rock 'n roll! Our school had a most unwelcome visitor this fall, also. The "flu-bug" paid us a visit! If you were lucky enough to escape it, you got a free two-day vacation, but, unfortunately, the majority of us had to spend it in One cold Saturday morning this winter, several ambitious followers of our Youth Center clan, gathered at the City Hall, and gave the student "dance hall" anew coat of paint. The light green and pale pink were certainly a welcome change after having looked at those brownish- maroon walls for the last falmosti twenty years. About fifty percent of the paint went home in their hair and clothes, but the job had been accomplished. 5 This winter was probably the most busy time of the year for most of us. Parties and dances came first on our list of social activities. The Velvet Curtain had their annual treat in December When, after a dinner at the Holiday House, they saw the play THE MENAECHME at the University Theatre. The G.R.A,, our school's group of girls who have an abundance of energy and talent in athletics, sponsored several activities. These included: a "sock hop", a lovely Valentine's formal, "Cupid's Ball"g a pencil sale, and many playnights. This group seems to employ some kind of puzzling magic, for it isn't everyone that can make dance decorations vanish into thin air the Week before the dance! M.V.H.S.'s Young Homemaker's Club also had an active year in our school. Everything from recipe-exchanging to hair- cutting filled their many meetings. They are exceptionally proud of one member, Miss Judy Busenbark, better known as "Miss Betty Crocker." Judy won the honor this spring in the annual contest. mBetty1v In looking forward to spring, the first event- that comes to our minds is the Junior-Senior Prom. The juniors, Whose plans are now well under Way, will have to really have a "hum- dinger" to compare with last year's "Springtime Silhouettes." B!-XND?'?? l958 is still not at an end, and until it is, life Will probably continue at this same never-ending, jet-propelled rate. A band tour is in the planning stages, three one-act plays are being rehearsed, a senior trip is being fought over, and innumerable other activities are being squeezed in before that hour, when the 1958 seniors will walk down that aisle for the last time. 3. 'i 32, All in all, it's been a great year, with many experiences that will go with us for the rest of our lives. It seems impossible to be- lieve that this merry-go-round of constant good times will come to an end. But, actually, it never does, for as long as there is a building, a faculty, and a student body, the spirit of M.V.H.S. will never dimin- ish! -SU1 ANNUAL STAFF ROW ONE: J. Cookes, H. Brisbin, S. Two recreational activities Were also on the agenda for the second semester. One was a swimming party held for the sophomore class alone. The other was a skating party in Cedar Rapids with the tenth graders selling tickets to the remaining high school students. Vernon Football Team finished the season with an 8 win, 0 loss record to mark the first year that Mount Vernon had produced an unde- feated football tearn. An inspired Mustang Eleven swept the conference for seven straight wins, and defeated the defending Wamac Conference Champs in the season's opener. This 'Was the smallest team, bothin stature and in num- ber, which Mt. Vernon had fielded in some years. Twenty-four men composed the entire team, consequently, the blunt of the playing fell on the shoulders of nine returning letterrnen and four eager replacements. The reserves saw ac- tion in most of the games. The will 'to win, unselfish team effort, a fine coaching staff, tremendous spirit, and added "fire" when the chips were down, resulted in the Winning combination of the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference Champions . Vernon completed another fine athletic season as the basketball team rolled to a 12 win, 8 loss record, and a tie for 3rd place in conference play. This record represented the best effort on the part of Mt. Vernon's "hard court" teams since the conference champs of 1952. Mt. Vernon established another record as they fought their way into the sectional finals. This had not been accomplished by any other Mustang squad since 1950. The '57-'58 squad was characterized by many extremes. In some games it would have been difficult to buy a basket, while in others the Mustangs delivered a sharp shooting percentage. Mt. Vernon was defeated by the conference "cellar dweller" and the next week upset the conference leaders. This "hot" and "cold" property was the big reason the Mt. Vernon team did not deliver the conference champs. The boys were determined and hard workers and they possess the ability to work together. This, and a splended job of coaching by Mr. Chet Wallace resulted in the fine Mustang basketball tealn which Mt. Vernon was very proud of. They Won all 14 of their conference games, which made them undisputed champions of the conference. The team was made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores With one jun- ior and one senior. Howard Clark and Randy Hoidahl played the forward po- sition, Dennis Carney Was center, While Leroy Studt and Doug Macaulay played guard. Their coach Was Mr. Hipple who taught them to play defense ruggedly and handle the ball expertly. The team came along very Well this year and they should produce some fine players for Mt. Vernon in the next few years. This page sponsored by VAVRA LUMBER CO, Phone 4911, Ely, Iowa WRESTLI G ROW ONE: R. Hoidahl, W. Bratton, J. Maxson, F. Neihaus, D. Koch, B. Inks. ROW TWO E Saathoff, J. Vernon matmen completed their second season marked by some good and bad features. The whole bad side of the season was Mt. Vernon's failure to win a meet. This, however, does not tell the whole story. Considering their lack of experience and the youth of the team, a better showing could not have been asked. Despite their record, there were many good features of this years season. One of these was the eager partici- pation and growing interest of the team and student body, Mt. Vernon discovered many fine prospects for future wrestlers on the 1957-58 squad. Fine coaching by Mr. Reed along with the determination of the boys produced many individual Winners. As the team continues to gather experience and the fine potential of the Wrestlers is realized, Mt. Vernon will be able to boast of a Champion Wrestling squad. Considering the inexperience of the tea.m, Mt. Vernon can be very proud of the fine efforts of the coach and team of 1957-58. RST AM LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach, K. Reedg Manager, D. Bowmang J. Walker, D. Thursday night was highlighted by the traditional pep stunt, snake dance, and bonfire. Friday was the usual hectic day as time ran out and preparations neared completion. Then the big moment arrived as the Mustangs took the field and went on to 'defeat Columbus Junction 40-13. At half-time the queen candidates were pre- sented as they approached in shiny, new convertibles. At the dance Linda Trpkosh was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1957 by Student Council President, Roger Brush. Linda was attended by Thiara Bys, Joan Clark, Marilyn Dean, and Gail Yeisley, who were es- corted by Bob Kruse, Dick Bowman, Harold Clements, Howard Clark, and Bob Bowman. Richard Scott emceed the presentations and the coronation. Queen Linda, escorted by Bob Kruse, led the Grand March. CA LORIE S! CALGRIE S ! N o BOY! o BOY!
