Such a iob is not always an easy one since rules of iournalism prevent rash and spontaneous ideas. Cynthia Bennett, Shirley Garman and Anne Massey do much of the typing of copy. This task always proves to be a long tedious assignment for material usually is done in many various styles and is not always legible. Preparing copy forms for the printers, making pictures fit dummy sheets and designing pages for all the classes, clubs and sports. Sidney Thompson, Bob Hobson and Norbert O'Hare spent many hours during the summer months for the '56 Surveyor. Advertising partially supplements money for the publication of our yearbook. Marilyn Meserve, Becky Rios and Joan Morris try to adjust copy to fit space purchased by our advertisers. What are we going to do for extra pages? And, when will we ever get all of the pictures made with so much activity in the school is a problem that arises often in publishing a yearbook. Gretchen Young and Nancy Pastore discuss unique picture lay- outs while Bob Raybold studies the present working "dummy". Anne Flynt and Miss Lowman try to "iuggle" more space for important school activities by studying the outline of page con- tents. 041 +446 1 'fb ,L . ff, ff ' ' . fl ve Identification of class pictures always proves to be a headache for those staff members responsible. Suzanna Palmer, Patsy Baum- ert and Pat Peyton have spent many hours "licking" and "sticking" identification tabs for the classes. As we look back over the past year, we are reminded of many un- forgettable moments and happy experiences. We, who are seniors, look back upon four years filled with fond remembrances of friend- ships deeply rooted and lives well lived. These friends with whom we have lived, worked, shared ioys and sorrows, played, dreamed, and talked of things to come are indeli- bly written into the pattern of our lives. The Surveyor will help to keep alive the flame and spirit of these years and will become a source of keen enioyment as we confidently turn our steps to the future. its School Life Activities Sports Features 0ur Heritage Administration Classes Seniors Advertisements In Memoriam 'G f v 'Wrvf an 'Lf' gan, Pt A 5' i fue? lf vii ki 414 ? tiff' NELSON WEBSTER COE lll Nelson came to Mount Vernon from George Wash lngton Hugh at the beglnmng of his freshman year He was graduated with the Class of l955 after a very suc cessful hugh school career which saw hum actlve In sports band the newspaper and many other extra curricular actnvltles Nelson was a friend to many and he will be greatly mlssed by all of us who knew hlm HAROLD LEE SHIFLETT Harold enrolled at Mount Vernon In September 1950 but was forced to leave m the middle of hls lumor year After leavlng he married the former Mlss Betty Vetter who had previously graduated from Mount Vernon He IS survived by his wife and one child Harold wull be missed by all has area friends 6 I I I I 'W 'T . Its purpose is to broaden interest in art throughout the school. Members participate in activities such as making clay pieces, painting, drawing, clay and shell iewelry and making posters. Each year the club sponsors bake sales, an art contest and a field trip to an exhibit at an art gallery, fol- lowed by sketching at Haines Point. We conducted sales at P.T.A. meetings, ot Christmas decorations and clay objects. Bible Club The Bible Club had a fine year filled with many blessings that only the Lord could have given. Throughout the year we had Bible quizzes, debates, and speakers. Many of our speakers and much of our talent came from within the club. To de- velop a feeling of unity and competition, the club divided into two teams, Boaz and Ruth. The prayer bands held during the three lunch shifts and chapel were faithfully sup- ported bythe Bible Club. The main purpose of all meetings and activities was to show the students that a life without Christ is useless. Gotillion n Dancing means fun! And that's what the mem- bers of the Cotillion have had in the past year. Due to the co-operation and interest of the mem- bers, the second year has been even more suc- cessful than the first. Under the able sponsorship of Mr. Walters, we met after school every other Thursday. After a brief business meeting, dancing and refreshments were enioyed by everyone. On December 'l6, our dancing season began with our Christmas record hop, held at the Vir- ginia Lodge for members and their guests. Feb. 17, we sponsored the school Valentine's Dance. The gym was gaily decorated for the occasion, we y had a band from Ft. Myer, and a good time was T had by all. The year ended with our Spring Formal, held for members and guests only. OFFICERS: Lisa Kanwit, Felton Harris, Mr. Walters, sponsor, Peggy Fun being our main obiective, students were Rowe -lone' Blackwell' and Cuflls Mlsna- constantly wanting to ioin the Club, however, the limit of fifty members was quickly filled at the beginning of the year, and we had to turn many down. All in all, this was a wonderful year for the Cotillion. We had a successful year and participated in many activities. Members assisted new teachers in the school with routine duties, and provided student helpers in the ele- mentary schools in the case of teacher absences. We took part in the March of Dimes disc jockey campaign and also raised money by conducting penny-pitch- ing at the basketball games. Our by-laws were changed to allow sophomores to be- come olticers, in order to stimulate the in- terest of the younger students. Approximately 150 girls tryed out and from these girls seven were chosen to be on Varsity. We were chosen by Miss Waid, our spon- sor, members of the faculty, and the graduating cheerleaders. After we were chosen a meeting for all the new cheerleaders was held and during this meeting we elected Sandra Roland the Varsity Captain and Peggy Cash Co-Captain. We began practice in August and during one SANDRA ROLAND PEGGY CASH MARY JANE O'NElL Mascot Captain Co-Captain practice we talked about our new uniforms. We decided to have maroon full skirts lined in white, white sweaters with a maroon and gray letter, and a maroon collar to match the skirts. We chose these colors to match our school colors which are maroon and gray. The main obiective of the cheerleaders was to lend support to the various athletic teams, and this was accomplished by holding pep rallies the day of home football games, sponsoring a bon- fire, and backing up the team along with the stu- dent body at the various games. -spit Left to Right Ann di Zerega Pat Watson Sandra Roland Alice Kendall Peggy Cash Sora Moses and Donna Mclntosh 70 ef . IL Cheerleaders SHIRLEY GARMAN Captain BETTE FENTON Co-Captain Seven girls were chosen last year to the Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Selection was made on the basis of grades, reputation, and personality. We were organized to encourage two main sport ac- tivities. We did this by making posters on the various games, by cheering at the pep rallies and games, and by having regular practice sessions. Our uniforms consisted of gray skirts, white sweaters, and maroon and gray letters and a gray collar to match the skirt. This was the first year for all of us except our captain, who was most helpful in getting us started. Shirley Garman was on the Junior Varsity squad last year, was chosen to be our captain this year. She was a iunior and a member of the year book statt. MISS WAID ".!T"Rfa'7 ' " Bette Fenton was our co-captain this past year. She was a iunior and a member of the commercial club. Jill Arneson was secretary-treasurer and a sophomore this year. Jill was also treasurer ofthe Student Government and a member of the news- paper staff. Susanna Palmer was a sophomore this year and Class Editor of the yearbook. Lynn Sisselburger was a freshman this year. Sports and iokes were her favorite pastimes. Judy Conk was a iunior and the treasurer of the French Club. Brenda Johnson was a sophomore this past year. She was on the Junior Varsity basketball team and sang in the glee club. Fractions have Mr. Moore's Math I class a bit confused, particularly when the day's plans call for a test. Mr. Hamilton's ESSO class is one of many such classes necessary to complete the day for eighth grade students. Proper physical training is most impor- tant for our youth, and Mr. Lyles demon- strates proper tactics to his class. Miss Waid's third period class demon- strates one of the many interesting ac- tivities conducted for eighth grade girls. Learning how to make one' own clothing is most important to any girl and eighth grade girls are given a chance to try their skill in Home Economics. E 31111 .... .pf E J 2 " ' is Q. 5 ..
