Advisors were Mr. joseph Murphy, Mrs. Ellen Opal Ruse sell, and Mrs. C. Maury Nelson. The class assembly was presented for Thanksgiving Day. It had the theme of a hoy of 1944 showing a Quaker lad around the modern world. Reverend A. VV. VVilson spolae for a few minutes. after which George Enyeart gave a read- ing. A 'Asearecrow quartet" composed of Dale MeDaniels, jerry Stover, Lester Smith and Bill Davis sang a few num- hers, after which a short skit was pre- sented. Back Forty-six The class sponsored several dances during the year. One was given in Ian- uary and was called the 'Club 463, and carried out the theme of a night club or cabaret. The class also set a record by their dance in March, at which they made a profit of S150-something which has never been done before by any other school organization here, at a dance. But the highlight of the year for the class was, of course, the Junior Prom, presented at the Country Club, April 20. The Hi-Flyers, from Vllhidbey Is- land, played at the 'iDeep Purple Ball." The hall was decorated in purple and silver and all the proceeds went to the Red Cross. C. rl., ami the decorations were carried out in the Christmas motif. First games were played in which the whole Forty-seven class participated. Jeanne Vilte per- llormed some magic triclys and then everyone danced. The party was very successful. The Sophomores gave a VVashing- ton-Lincoln assemhly. "VValte Up, Vllilliu a short play ahout a typical Amer- ican higli-school hoy, was the highlight ol' the program. lr was written hy Alvin Iohnson, llicliard Lawson, and Don Flynn and was produced hy the Latin Class of which they are memhers. Scotts "Lady of the Laliefl which is Familiar to all Freshmen, was rewritten in comedy style by Dorothy Libby, Sharon Rice and Dorothy Goode hue. The play was presented in three acts, and the roles oi' Ellen, Brian, Fitz James, Douglas, Blanch ol' Devin, and Dunean's widow were played most entertainingly. Readings and musical numbers, demonstrating lreshman talent concluded the program. General chair- man ot the assembly was Peggy Quande, while lim Lindberg was chairman in charge of the play. The frosh had no lettermen, but lim Lindberg, Alvin Koetji Ken hlillay, Richard Meyer, and Boy VVeymouth did well in basketball and played on the second team. Bob Carney was assistant manager oi' the squad. ln football, Dana Leigh and Jim Lindberg did well, Dana playing center and jim playing end on the second team. I .. . . ...- .', 7 I I V F A ' GROWING PAINS On December 12, the Senior Class pre- sented its annual play entitled "Growing Pains." a three-act comedy, by Auranie Rou- verol. The play, directed by Miss Cornelia Hansen, was a big success, The leading characters were, Gloria Dawson, an exasperating young tomboy: her brother, Scott VVynstra, a love-sick boy in his teensg and their sympathetic mother and father, Pauline Vike and Edgar Cam- eron. STAGE CREW Under the direction of Mr, J, Turner Pedersen, the stage crew this year turned out some exceptionally t'iue work, including the difficult and unusual patio scene set- tings for the senior play "Growing Pains." A complete knowledge of every part of the stage and the lights is gained by each boy who belongs to this group. PEP CLUB The Pep Club, forty senior girls, was organized under the direction of Miss Nelda Peterson with Betty Lockhart elected drill leader, l'lllf0l'IllS of white skirts and blouses trimmed with green bows were worn by the girls, who performed many colorful drills at school athletic events, Kathleen Koffel, Shirley Kallstrom, and Therese O'Leary were the "high stepping" majorettes of the group. "LAS TRECE SENORITAS' Meetings of the Spanish Club were held the first and third Fridays of the month under the direction of Miss llo Reiner, Offi- cers for the year were: Kathleen Koffel. president: Nola Mason, vice-president: Patty lllaney, secretary-treasurer, and Nancy Mason, scribe. A full year of activities was completed by giving the Pan-American assembly for the student body in April. SECOND YEAR LATINS Highlighting the events of the second year Latin Club was the annual Latin Ban- quet, held in the spring, and attended by all members, dressed in appropriate eos- tumes. First year students were required to serve the dinner, as well as to prepare the entertainment. Janet Lloyd was president of this club, and Miss Maurine Ballard was advisor. ALL-SCHOOL PLAY "Big Hearted Herbert." under the direc- tion of Mrs. Ellen Opal Russell, was the highly amusing all-school play this year, lt was presented to the general public March 14 and included a cast of thirteen under- classmen. 36 CHOIR The choir under the direction of Mrs. Pauline libeling Markwood, has developed its own musical interests, besides bringing a better understanding of the meaning of music to the students, their parents and friends. Highlights for the choir this year were the Christmas and spring concerts, and their participation in the Northwest Counties Music Festival at Bellinszham, as well as broadcasts over station KVOS and a party at the Community hall. GIRLS' ENSEMBLE The girls' ensemble, which received the rate of Superior and the continent "the best, of any group of its type" at thc Northwest Counties Musical Festival, provided nnlcli musical entertainment for community at'- fairs. Special among their repertoire was "Ave Maria" with incidental solo by Mat'- jorie Sayre, "O Lovely Night" by Landon Ronald, and "Do Not Go, My Love" by Richard Hageman, ORCHESTRA Highlighting the yt-at' for the Mount Vernon High School orchestra was their participation in their twenty-fifth annual spring concert for instrumental music. under the able direction of their conductor, Mr. Harry S. Steele. They appeared in the Christmas concert, and entertained the student-body in a mid-year concert, among' whose numbers the students enjoyed most was the "One Tune Band," showing differ- ent, methods of playing the old favorite "The Old Oaken Bucket." GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Sixty-five voices were blended in har- mony in the Girls' Glee Club to sing in the Christmas and spring concerts. Of special interest at the Yuletide season were the arrangements of Humperdinck's "Prayer" from HHHHSPI and Gretelf' as well as Berlin's "White Christmas" and "Silent Night, Holy Night" by Franz Gruber. The spring concert included the renditions of "Beautiful Ohio." "Three Little Maids," and "l'an't Help Singing," by the group, BOYS' GLEE CLUB The Boys' Glee Club, composed ot' twenty- tive boys, participated in the t'hristmas and sit-ing concerts. as well as singing before several service clubs. Group numbers in the Christmas concert included several Negro spirituals. and carols, In the spring concert the boys joined the Girls' Glee to sing a delightful arrangement oi' "Sympathy" by Rudolph Friml.
