A Happy New Year was being echoed in the Ohio River town of Bellaire in 1931 as Houston was born. He spent his early life in Bellaire and graduated from Bellaire High School. After a four-year-hitch in the Navy Houston completed work on a B.S. degree from Ohio State. He earned a Mas- ters Degree from St. Maryfs College in St. Mary's, Minneso- ta in 1970. He achieved the degree on a National Science Foundation grant. With his wife Agnes, and four children Will, Tom, Bar- bara and John, Houston lives on Glen Road. His son, Will, is a senior this year. Besides teaching Biology ll, Houston is involved in vari- ous extracurricular activities. When the cross-country team was dissected from the school program, he volunteered to coach a cross-country club to keep the interest of the sport alive. He also volunteered to coach the girls' basketball team that completed county competition this year. In by- gone years he was a baseball coach and the faculty volley- ball teamis coach, playmaker, strategist, mediator and rule- maker. Houston has taught in the local system eight years. He has prior experience at Cambridge Junior High and three 2 , W. Nicholson Houston years at Colegio San Justo in Puerto Rico. Houston is involved in a host of civic activities centering around conservation and various fund drives. ln 1970, he, more than anyone else organized the April Environmental Day and had students participate in many worthwhile activities. According to a variety of sources, Houston is known as a 10 minute 4- second miler, a'hampster hunter, a person who tried to start a goat herd by buying two nanny-goats, an avid conservationist, a craver of beef stroganoff, an antique restorer, a Detroit Tiger-Cleveland Brown-Woody Hayes fan, and an organizer of such experiences as chameleon and cockroach races. Most of all he is considered a fine, just, understanding and fair teacher. K r 3 I 3 'Y f E 4 ffm 'Hi .. ,.,..-r 53" W. ,,-- , aw 1 L ' -W4 ' Q-ff., .MU 'pai ui 'vanfmw -v ini QQ ,,,. Choir Sings This was the choir's first year under the director Miss Mary Cree. Highlights of the year included a candle-light initiation, the construction of a Christmas float, several choral presentations, and the annual "Tops in Pops" program. Although the choir was smaller than in other years, spirit was high and mouths were large and the group managed through much talk and action, to pull themselves out of the mire debts accumulated in past years. According to Miss Cree the year was successful both musically and financially. The choir performs at the Thanksgiving Assembly. 142 1: Valerie McManis, Shawn Welker, Cindy Fluhart, Mary Starmer, Nancy Martin, Row 1: Jim Smithhisler, Sean Foster, Jeff Dorton, Drew Zimmerman, Mark Hagans, Chuck Day' Raw 2-' Km' CUNY' I-'Ynne Deminskii Kim MHIOIICY, Brenda Carr, Judy Helms. There was no varsity Cross Country team for the 1971-1972 season due to financial cutbacks. However eight boys encouraged by fourth year Coach Nick Hous- ton, formed a Cross Country Club. They labeled them- selves the Ridgerunners. The team ran four meets against nine teams, won 2, over Buckeye Valley and New Lexington, lost to Newark ftwicej, Lancaster, Westerville, Granville, and Highland. The team tied Hilliard. They were allowed to run in the OCC League meet and, finished 7th over Whitehall. ln the District meet in Columbus theytfinished 10th before Bishop Hartley, and Columbus South. Houston says this was the fastest group hels had in his last three years.'He feels constant conditioning through- out the year will improve the team. For his volunteer efforts the team awarded Coach Houston a watch. Cheerleaders VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Row 1: Kim Sockman. Row 2: Sharyn Reasoner, Ellie Hollinger, Peg Blu baugh.
