VUEAlIUNlXlMAEHlNIElS The vocational machine course was started in 1929 for the benefit of those boys who were interested in learning a trade. Since that time, ap- proximately eighty boys have finished the course and have jobs. The trade work is done in cooperation with the Cooper-Bessemer plant. Funds from the state pay half the teachers' salaries, and the other half is paid by the local board of education. Cooper's furnish the shop and most of the ma- terials. Boys interested in this course must take math and industrial arts in their freshman and sophomore years of high school. During the spring of their sophomore year, they take a mechanical aptitude test, and those plac- ing high are assigned to the day trade school for most of their Work the last two years. In the junior year, the boys must take a year of vocational English, and in their senior year, they take American history and American problemsf ' When they work at the shop, they do shop work for three hours a day, and spend two hours on related subjects. There were twelve juniors and fourteen seniors in the course the first of the year, but the sizeof the class was cut down by enlistments in the armed services. This vocational course has proved beneficial to many of the boys, and they find that they usually have a good paying job soon after they graduate from high school. i Page Seventy
