PROLOGUE You ARE the first one here. The only other present is “The Spirit of the Mountain”. In the refreshing stillness, the feeling overtakes you that the “Spirit” is too old for conversation; too old to be troubled about anything. But, for a century and a half, there has been a unique tradition about this “Spirit”. You realize this tradition is something of which others are extremely proud, and something in which you will partake. You've been here a while. The “Spirit” moves closer. His age retreats as his presence nears. That wrinkled brow is there for your concern—the rosary, the new gym, the guiding hand. His chapel, dedicated to your heavenly mother, is the epitome and fulcrum of your life, now and forever. The “Spirit” teaches you that the stationary condition is the beginning of the end. Your final days with the “Spirit” are here. Somewhere, in the fleeting shadows, the “Spirit” has chosen you as one of his own, and you are proud. His age is youth; his wrinkle is the smooth forehead of future hope—of things to come. And somehow, you know that you are contingent.
