St. Mary’s College Emmitsburg, Md. editor-in-chief chairman-of-the-board robert a evers james r murphy PROLOGUE You ARE the first one here. The only other present is “The Spirit of the Mountain”. In the refreshing stillness, the feeling overtakes you that the “Spirit” is too old for conversation; too old to be troubled about anything. But, for a century and a half, there has been a unique tradition about this “Spirit”. You realize this tradition is something of which others are extremely proud, and something in which you will partake. You've been here a while. The “Spirit” moves closer. His age retreats as his presence nears. That wrinkled brow is there for your concern—the rosary, the new gym, the guiding hand. His chapel, dedicated to your heavenly mother, is the epitome and fulcrum of your life, now and forever. The “Spirit” teaches you that the stationary condition is the beginning of the end. Your final days with the “Spirit” are here. Somewhere, in the fleeting shadows, the “Spirit” has chosen you as one of his own, and you are proud. His age is youth; his wrinkle is the smooth forehead of future hope—of things to come. And somehow, you know that you are contingent. JOHN DUBOIS FOUNDER AND FIRST PRESIDENT “It must appear evident . . . that, indeed, we need . . . leaders who by their talent for government, their inspiration and experience, their great virtues, can be trustees... of His will... for as a matter of fact, we haven't any for a long time.” Rev. Joun Dusots 10 RIGHT REVEREND JOHN L. SHERIDAN, M.A., LL.D. PRESIDENT From the desk of the President: THE YEARBOOK of 753 is the book of the years, the vade mecum of the years to be when looking back through the mellowing haze of time and experience, the old student will thus court the genial play of nostalgic reverie. The enterprise, industry, and ingenuity of the class of °53 have produced a book that will equal, if not excel, the high standard of its predecessors. While it predominently stresses the personnel of ll the seniors, the actvities of the underclass men are generously and adequately portrayed. It is a pictor- ial and dramatic display of college life, thus having a strong appeal to the entire student body. Oldsters prone to compare or contrast the now with the then will find herein abundant data to enliven the controversy. It is a meritorius achievement and the home folk bespeak the cordial appreciation of all Mountaineers. 7 @ faculty and administration Thou wert my guide, philosopher, and friend. ALEXANDER POPE REV. He loses himself in reminiscence. —recall the first day i arrived . . t really wanted to turn back . . it was raining... .. was never so home- sick in all my life... rules, rosters, and registration . uw was hard getting accustomed to the idea that mom wouldn't be cooking my meals and i wouldn’t be sleeping in my old bed, andi. He goes on and on, reliving his transitionary days at the Mount—the days that were hard for a tenderfoot. It was true that the novelty of this new experience engendered an ardent feeling of insecurity. He rambles further into recollection. —that second year was terrific... i belonged .. . remember the first time i was caught coming in late; father refused to listen to my side of the story... i soon learned the ways of mountmen: late sleeps . . . close friendships ... lengthy bull sessions . . . in clubs . . interest . the inevitable “busting” . became a part of it all... . t quickly That “sport conscious, girl conscious, self conscious” soph- omore year, when St. Joe’s was no longer a mystery, but an actuality. He knew every corner of his age old campus, and every famed story of its illustrious past. He was proud of that second year—proud to be a mountaineer. —there are a thousand happy moments i could recall, moments Ull never forget ... just a little more than half way through, and already i’m feeling that i'll hate to leave . . . guess there'll be a thousand more instances to live through and be remembered . . Tempered by heartaches, enlivened by Mount spirit, and broadened by fraternity, he attaches an unpayable price tag to his school. —lm a part of it... it’s unbeatable . . . it’s in me sthank« God =. His attitude makes those four long years so much shorter. Memories alone can lengthen that unappreciated past. He yawns, turns over, and drifts from retrospective reverie to dreams of a bigger and better future. “Scotch and water, please” MEMBERS Joseph f james r francis p nicholas w leo e william p william f frank b rodgers nash kiniry bath gribbin ward wolfe thomas Joseph h fornwald WHO’S WHO IN AMERICAN COLLEGES MEMBERS charles od evans leo e gribbin nicholas w bath robert a evers francis a headley John j lyons william p ward anthony r semararo harry f mc partland a CYEME de la CV CHILE DELTA EPSILON SIGMA the brain trust MONSIGNOR TIERNEY HONOR SOCIETY OFFICERS president joseph f rodgers vice-president paul x mullen secretary joseph h fornwald historian edward c quinlan 35 OFFICERS president francis a headley vice-president harry f mepartland secretary james e laposta treasurer paul x mullen STUDENT COUNCIL between the high command and the ranks: the liaison... e- ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION ...for intra-murder, bumps, bruises, and sportsmanship OFFICERS president robert a evers vice-president james j adams secretary george v carter treasurer peter ] o hagan ANTHONY R. HILAIRE BELLOC Ad Building October 8th Dear Mom, Received your letter and am happy to report that my homesickness has officially disappeared. School activities keep me so busy lately, there has been little time to think of anything else. It all began with Frosh hazing. What a rough time the Sophs showed us! We were commanded to wear beanies, rolled-up pants, and two different socks and shoes. For a week we used back doors, bowed to all upperclassmen, and marched back and forth to town. And guess what? We revolted and defended ourselves at the swimming pool where hazing ended in splashing style. Luckily, retreat exercises followed on the heels of hazing. You’d never recognize me, going to church five times a day! Seriously, this retreat helped me tremendously—made me think quite a bit. The first six-week marks appeared today. Considering the roughness of the tests, my grades aren’t too bad. You should realize by now that college is different from high school. Keep telling this to dad—he doesn’t seem to understand. Our floor team looks great on the gridiron. We’ve won our last three games. With some luck, we could reach the playoffs. Our opposition is getting keen, though. Mom, there’s a big time brewing this weekend and I’m wondering if you could send me some extra money. . . Dubois December 10th Dear Mom, Pll have to hurry to get this written. Tonight our Glee Club presents its annual Christmas Concert and I don’t want to miss any of it. Last night the seminary choir serenaded the entire school with Christmas Carols—one of the most striking sights I’ve ever witnessed. It really put the pep into the campus. Speaking of pep, the “Slobs,” of which I am now a member, raised the roof off the gym at our basketball opener. We won, and it looks like the Mount quint is going places this year. A group of us swam in the indoor pool this afternoon. The water was warm and refreshing, so different from the snow battle waged on campus yesterday. Snowballs flew for two hours as everyone fired at everyone else. One fellow heaved a wild toss, and smashed a window. This ended the war. Too bad it was my window. I attended my first I-R.C. meeting the other night. The members are cooperating in a joint discussion slated for January. It is my job to do research on the bolsheviks and socialists. I didn’t even know how to spell them until tonight. Can’t wait to get home this Friday. We're getting ready for the departure already. Some of my friends erected a Christmas tree in the hall and are planning a party Thursday evening. It should be a lot of fun. It’s going to cost me to come all the way home this time. I wonder if, in the charity of your pocketbook, you could lend me... a Brute March 3rd Dear Mom, Well, we’re over the first hill and already back at the “grind”. I’m writing a term paper, which keeps me pretty busy these cold evenings. I have to spend a lot of time in the library. Been there so much recently that some of the guys think I’m one of the statues. One evening, while doing reseach, I ran across a lecture group discussing the great classics of literature. I know youre laughing already, but I enjoyed it greatly. Thanks very much for allowing me to attend the Prom. Our ballroom was beautiful and, coupled with the colorful gowns, blended into an artistic masterpiece. All the gals looked gorgeous, especially Mary who had them swooning in a catching blue gown. Secretly I hoped she’d be crowned queen but, the judges can’t choose everybody. The hotel is still standing but some of the collegians aren't. It was the best time I’ve ever had. Once again, thank you very much. Ever since basketball season ended we’ve had a lull in varsity sports. Recently, the spotlight has been focused on the intramural playoffs in which our floor team put up a furious fight. We were beaten but now look toward volleyball and badminton. A call has been posted for varsity baseball players to report—a sure sign of early Spring around here. During Lent, I’ve been going to daily mass and abstain- ing from smokes. Feels pretty good to be a martyr. The Church is well filled for 7:15 mass so I find I’m not the only one “suffering”. I'd like to put the finishing touches to that term paper so I'll sign off. Just a reminder that the first payment is due on our class rings and I could use... . McCaffrey May 18th Dear Mom, This will probably be the last of the many epistles I’ve written from the Mount. It seems so long and yet so short since I started writing them four years ago. I know what you're thinking: his letters have become shorter and shorter, too. This will be no exception. My finals start tomorrow and, as usual, time is of the essence. If I pass the tests, it will be a welcomed relief. The beautiful spring we’re having is the most distracting element from studies I’ve ever encountered. I’ve managed to dub a few shots on our five-holer out front, and I hope my sun tan doesn’t peel until you see me. This time of year there are a plethora of “lasts” for seniors. For instance, the other evening I played my last softball game, and attended my last K. of C. meeting and band concert. Today is the last day for senior classes. I’m already becoming a bit nostalgic about leaving. Many times I’ve wished the Mount had a graduate school so that I could make my days here last a little longer. Since this is my final letter, (Il put it more bluntly than usual. I need some money for expenses and a few other items. Please wire me. . C. Beetel G. Bowling T. Dillon J. They are the fruition of the seed planted in the beginning of their seminary training, the realization of an ideal motivating them for many years past. To those of us who stay behind, still preparing for that day ‘ when we too shall answer that decisive “adsum”, these former fellow seminarians and future brother priests are more than just workers in the vineyard of the Church. They are for each one of us symbols, pointed reminders of our own day of ordination. In a way they are the realization of our own dreams, plans, and hopes. We have known them and have known them well—lived with them as brothers, some of us for five years, some for less; we have prayed the same prayers, attended the same classes, eaten the same food, laughed at the same jokes, because of our mutual ideals and goal they are as close to us as our own families. Each year as they leave, we draw nearer to the reason for our being here—the explanation of that 106 bond existing in our midst, the bond of charity and sympathy in its fullest sense. We draw nearer to the time when we shall , as others in the past and they now, bring forth fruit, not of ourselves, but through Him without Whom we can do nothing, and to Whom we are grateful for all He has done and will continue to do. That, then, is the reason we rejoice with them, the explanation of our sentiments. Everything that we do here in the seminary—be it prayer, study, work, or recreation—is all directed toward one end, the goal they have attained. As pleasant as our days in the seminary might be, as peaceful and satisfying as they are, separated from this goal, of which this yearly departure is a sign, they would be meaningless and empty. A better symbol of our life here at the Mount could not be found. As for an explanation of our motives none adequate can be given: that must be experienced to be fully understood. That this goal is our true vocation is our prayer. 99 st step he fir ip 66 FIRST PHILOSOPHY “for second year men, a B.A.” SECOND PHILOSOPHY ‘a Ss nosti spe fh 10 Ce ees ee eee nse ee esse. ee ae I I ED I ST TL I I TE I a RR I A Ae A en Tt me gee ee re ee first theology ...and in addition, revelation — third theology Mey grate ‘ second theology DEACONS James Beeman Louis Bentivoglio Joseph Bonner William Eelman Richard Frank Patrick Gillooly Lawrence Golon Cyril Hudak Floyd Keeler Robert Killion Thomas Walsh Timothy Ladden Joseph Leary Dominic Mammarella Joseph Mazaika Charles McDermott Robert McDonald James Mulvaney Joseph Segrue Thomas Shaefer Ienatius Wadas 109 =n 2 | iB! . . . . . . . . mes a pause m Ye€ CO ‘the yer a e! naa Tore AEE Eee Wate HE = Bue 4 BaSual 3 Beet eaveeer — Ne Bae | ae = ate Ss aN ; % — = = Ss S iT) g S “_ S eee o S B a. = ; oat = e ane 4 wiol S acG@e8 ShGSeen: it can’t be that close!
