San Antonio students, we cleclicate this, the 1951 issue of the Chaparral. Miss Heisiey has heen more than an instructor in the life science department, she has heen a perfect friend, a splendid acivisor to the sophomore class, and in addition has had the responsibility of the gracluation. Through her willingness to help any student who may ask assistance of her, she has become a friend to au. As we have themed this issue around the Mountaineer friendly spirit, foresight, and earnest clesire to build this college into a Wonderful institution, we feel that Miss Heisiey is the essence of this theme. There- fore, this Chaparral is respectfully dedicated to Miss Heisiey, who is to the utmost of her ahiiity making Mt. San Antonio College a living example of the dreams of its founders. EJ President Although administrative problems are Dr. Belts main concern, seldom does a day pass when conferences with students are not on his agenda. Buildings, grounds, con- tracts, average daily attendance, and all things which junior college presidents are faced with, take a good share of President Belts time. S. A. C., brought the team through its first winning year in the colleges short history as the Mounties finished the '50 - '51 season with a I5-I2 win -loss record. Perry, who captained the U. C. L. A. laaslcetloall team to a Pacific Coast Confer- ence Championship in 1947, had only one returning letterman, Captain Don Veil, with whom to mold his team into shape. Un the other hand, however, Perry was hlessed with the most loeautilul gymnasium in Southern California, a turnout of 42 candidates, almost all freshmen, and an enthusiastic team spirit. During the three months prior to the opening game, coach Perry gave his laoys a vigorous worlcout laellore he was satisfied that they were ready for the stitt competi- tion ahead. He molded his team out of inexperienced players, only three ot whom had played first-string hall in high school. The hard worlc paid off as the Mounties opened the season, defeating six out of eight opponents. The Wlounties made such a good showing, in fact, that in the pre- season Challey tournament they were piclced as a darlchorse to talce the conference championship. The uperrymenu trounced Cal Poly in the opening con- 7 test 69-52. They were led lay the timely scoring of Don Veil and Bart Bartholemy, who tallied I4 and I3 points respect- ively. Four days later the team traveled to East Los Angeles to meet their first delleat at the hands of the Huskies in the Garfield High gym. The Mounties could not get their fast hrealc going on the short court and lost in the final score 68-65. ln the return match two weeks later, SAC, playing on its own long court, slaughtered the Huslcies, 74-57. SAC had trouhle with neither Citrus nor Nlarch Field 1 is ,gf F' R-E 1, i Q t and dropped Santa Ana 62-47 in the opening game oi the Chaliey Tournament. Teams entered in the tourney included I6 ol the top teams in Southern California. Gut of the 16 Eastern Conference teams, Chalfey finished first, San Bernardino, second, and Fullerton, third, proving superiority over the other three major conferences in Southern California. The contestys result was in doulat until the final two seconds when a Panther reverse forward toolc advantage ol a long shot. The Mounties wound up the nine-game practice schedule lay upsetting one ol the most powerful lrosh l teams in the Southland when they nipped the Wliit- tier College yearlings 56-54 in a thrilling contest. But they were edged out lay March Field 62-59 alter only one llirst- stringer showed up during the Christmas vacation tussle. The Mountaineers traveled to Riverside lor the Conlerence opening game and ran over the Tigers 52-56. Veil and Bartholemy again led the scoring with I5 and 10 points respectively. The result ol the contest was never in doulat from the opening tipoll. San Bernardino, liavored to talce the conlerence, met the Mounties and edged them out in the final two minutes of the game, 64-65. Mt. Sac was leading lay three points in the final two minutes ol the game, laut the indians put on a spectacular drive to overcome the deficit and Went on to win lay six points. After losing two out ol the lirst three conference games, the inexperienced Perrymen lost much ol their confidence. They did nothing outstanding during the next tour matches. Tied tor the loop cellar, the Mountaineers laegan their hard climla upward. ln the second round opening, they tromped Riverside 75-64. The Nlounties then ran over Citrus, 85-42, in a practice tussle. SAC dropped 81-61 and 68-55 decisions to Fullerton and Challey. Mt. Sac Finished the season lay rolling up tour straight victories over tough loes. The Whittier irosh were the first victims ot the linal onslaught, going down to defeat lay a score oi 59-55. The Purce Aggets also went down in defeat 62-42, as did Santa Ana and Orange Coast, 51-47 and 54-55 respectively. P tt .lim Nash. G. The Mounties, who ended the season with an over-all record of 22 Wins, as against nine losses, opened the season with a hang hy taking four straight. They heat the Barstow Marines twice, Redlands once, and then scored an upset win over the strong UCLA - Frosh. Whittier then shut out the Nlounties 2-0, hut the locals gained revenge hy trouncing the Poets 5-l in a return game a few days later. Facing Pierce College in their first game of the Southern California Baseball tournament, the Maroon and White slaughtered them I9-0. They then lost a 10-4 decision to a strong Santa Ana team, and were eliminated. Traveling south during the Easter vacation, the Mounties were nosed out hy Camp Pendleton 9-8, and came hack the next afternoon and scored a 7-6 victory over the strong San Diego JC nine in twelve innings, and closed out the trip the following afternoon hy turning hack the Recruiting Depot team 7-5. The Conference opener against San Bernardino was a hearthrealcer in which the Nlounties were edged 5-4, and then the Arramhidemen went on a rampage. This game was played at Mt. Sac and the Nlounlies came from hehind to edge the Dons 5-4, hut onthe following Friday the Mounties were defeated h Orange Coast 4-5. In their last conference game with second place stilliin douht, the lvlounties crushed Chatley 10-0. The Mounties then received an invitation to the Region l play - offs. ln their first game, they edged out the strong Long Beach nine 6-5, hut lost a tough one the following morning, heing downed hy the defending Champions, Pasadena CC, 5-2. The manner in which they lost the Pasadena game, plus the fact that they ran out of pitchers, allowed the El Camino team to hang a 12-5 defeat on the downhearted Nlounties. However, the following weelc-end, the Mounties rallied to heat hoth Glendale 8-6, and Santa Monica 4-2, and therehy talce third place in the tournament. Outstanding performances were turned in hy all of Coach John Arram- hide's men this year, and especially hy: ,Boh Lomhard, who had a pitching record ol 7 wins against only l defeat in the Conference, and an over-all season record of I2 wins, against just 5 losses.
