J-,I n x Coach Dotson and Coach Glennon pursue the mighty blue plan The Rams this year had two new additions to the coaching staff-Mr. Dotson, Head coach and Mr. Kelly, Assistant coach. Together they, Mr. Glennon, Mr. Cordes, and Mr. Ronia led a team that knew where they stood in the ranks, but had the pride in themselves and the respect of others who supported their '79 Season through- out the thick and thin of the NPSL. One special highlight to us all in their '79 Sea- son was Junior, Scott Miller who at the Kent- Meridian game at French Field ran for a 97-yard Touchdown for a new school record. DCA The Distributive Education class, commonly known as DECA, strived for many goals throughout the school year. Advised by Sharon Taki, their main goal was to learn and experience all the aspects of business such as marketing, management, sales, and advertising. They started out the year by rearrang- ing the school store to accommodate the growth in student customers. Since then, DE has sold candy bars, apples, and even "Snuggles". They were in charge of class rings, caps, gowns, and graduation announcements. As a com- munity service, the students took charge of a canned food drive at Christ- mas time and a ski swap with Highline High School in November. Youth and Government is a YMCA sponsored program for high school stu dents. The program consists of meeting once a Week from September to April In these meetings, the students study the problems Within Washington State and then Write a bill what would deal with Washington State problems. The participants in the Seattle area meet three times. The first time they elect officers. The second time, a meeting is held at a YMCA camp over a weekend to participate in a mock legislation. The students take up the roles as Representa- tives, Senators, lobbyists, reporters, and pages. During this time, mock legisla- ture discusses and votes on the bills written by the students. This is in prepara- tion for the real thing down in the State Capitol. High school students from all over the State of Washington convene in Olympia to form the YMCA youth legislature. They consider bills that are Written by the students. Mt. Rainier makes up the Highline delegation which is one of the strongest delegations of the state. To begin With, there was a 100 percent return of JV debaters from last year-that shows devotion! The first experience was getting to judge JV debaters at the NPSL Novice Tournament. Then, the varsity got its season off to a start at the Puyallup Invitational tournament. Competitions throughout the year in November took the team to Western Washington University, Highline High School, University of Puget Sound, and the University of Washington. Varsity debaters also represented Mr. Rainier well at NPSL Round Robins as the Rams qualified for state and left the other teams lookin on in awe. For a grand finale, the varsity team made its last showing at the State Debate and Individuals Events tourna- ments, and at the National Forensica League tournament. Along with studying stage make- up, technical theater, acting and directing, Michael Fuller also had his students involved in mime, con- figuration, and improvisation. During the time not spent developing skills in portable 9, the drama class went to various plays like "Taming of the Shrew", and "Our Town" at U.P.S. On top of all that, the Drama and Music Departments combined to form a Performing Arts Assembly for the students of M.R,, where everything from tap dancing to singing to jug- gling were performed. In the end, Mr. Fuller succeeded in opening up a new branch of creativity in the students which will never be lost or forgotten. Dave Dimick, a b'ind con man?! Rainier's annual such a memorable piece of work. Without the kind of guidance and help we get from professionals who care, the yearbook would not have been such a success. We would like to thank Mr. George Somoff and his assistant for their time, efforts, and fantastic pictures. Extra thanks goes to Mr. Jim Palm, field supervisor, who has guided us over the rough spots when We needed him most. Finally, We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Gene Sartore, who time and again, was the strong force behind our efforts. Without him the job wouldn't have gotten off the ground. photographers Donn Northquist and Rich Whitehill W. M...
