They were quite successful with a season record of 6-4, and a league record of 5-4, also, the two top players of the team, Mark Fickes and Ron Averill, represented Mt. Rainier well at the N.P.S.L. Tournament. They received the Medalist Awards at the Mt. Rainier Banquet. Terey Jennings was voted the Captain 's Award. The team had a strong determination to win. Whenever the match got close, the Rams always pulled away with a winning finish. The last match proved to be the most exciting. The team scored their highest total for the whole season, and two players also carded their season highs. Next year's team will be very good with the return of this year's Junior Varsity members, who did very well with a fine 7-3 record. Office Cvvk 2Ofl1 Anniversary This years annual staff would like to pay special tribute to those teachers who have remained at Mt. Rainier since l958. With their sincere dedication and hard work, Mt. Rainier has grown to be a truly fine school 'Hats off", and a big thank-you to these teachers. H so l Mr. Dennis Bernard attended the University of Washington and the University of California. He has remained at Mt. Rainier since i958 because of the high academic standards and the most sup- portive administration and faculty. When asked what question he encountered from a student that was the most humorous, he replied: 'Mn Bernard, are these books kept in any special order?" Mrs. Marty Kemp attended Whitman College, Washington State University, and the University of Washington. Mrs. Kemp has remained at Mt. Rainier because of her feeling of pride in watching the school develop. The opportunity, experience, and challenge of opening a new school was excit- ing for Mrs. Kemp. She said. when the school opened, only the ICD and QCX7 buildings were ready for occupancy. Also, the opening assembly was held in the library and until the cafeteria was com- pleted the students ate lunch in their classrooms. Obviously her influence has enabled Mt. Rainier to grow in quality and quantity. l 60 Mr. Jerome Kinsey did his graduate work at the University of Idaho. Since that time he has also attended Grays Harbor College, Highline College, Western Washington University, Central Washing- ton University, University of Washington, East Carolina University and North Texas State Univer- sity. After touring the United States, Mr. Kinsey's thought opening a new school like Mt. Rainier would be exciting. One of Mr. Kinsey's favorite pranks was the effigy of an opposing football play- er hanging l25 feet up in the air. His most reward- ing experience has been the success as they pur- sued higher education and professional careers. Ms. Barbara Starbird is a graduate of the Universi- ty of Washington. She has taught at Mt. Rainier since l958, and has remained here because she enjoys the students and staff. She has also formed a sentimental attachment to our school. When asked her first reaction to her first day at Mt. Rainier, she recalled wondering, "When will the construction be finished?" But even amidst the confusion of the new school atmosphere, she was given the opportunity to become acquainted with the students and faculty on a personal level. Mr. Ernest Wanzer attended Western Washington University, Central Washing- ton University, and the University of Wash- ington. Mr. Wanzer has seen many changes since coming to Mt. Rainier. The most no- ticeable of which has been the growth, JCX7 students to D412 and from one finished building to the campus we ha ve now. He has remained at Mt. Rainier since its opening because the teachers and students have consistently strived to make Mt. Rainier the best high school in the state. .wav- .wiiy X A U fi 52 g L 1" -likx JIM, .V 1,- .--., ' L.- f Tdrllgf , - lL!'s . .mygga S as H v5 Q, A54 v , .. zzlfmg M 9 r Ram Wrestling Ram Wrestling this year pro vided able competition in both tournament and dual meet matches. SK Y Club is a new name for an old club. SK Y Club, which stands for Spcial Kiwanis Youth, replaced Spades Club. This years SK Y Club was not very big, but it was very active. Their project this year was to do volunteer work at the Kiwanis Activity Cen- ter for the Mentally Retarded in Seattle. Before beginning this work they spent four weeks in a special training program. After the training pro- gram SKY members worked with the mentally re- tarded in various capacities. Sometimes they hehved by tutoring or teaching a certain craft or skill, but mainly their job was just to be friends to these people. SK Y members put a lot of effort into the Club, but they also got a lot out of it. Wm is 4 . 2 A, W, 'xl 2 , . 4 I 1 1 V, J ,',5wH, 1' H.. L, L , I. WE S 1- ,ginty U Club Advisor is Ruth Arnold. Well, you have your opinion and they have theirs, but through all the "wild and crazy days" in the news room you begin to wonder if you're leaving with everything you had when you came in, Not that journalism isn 't a class that requires work and frantic research to meet the dread- ed deadline, but some of the unusual methods of releas- ing creativity that can be witnessed in the news room are beyond credibility. Although the news staff could be classified as unusual and or different, Mr. Fagnan has led the Rams' Horn to be one of the best high school newspapers in the state land at times, in the nationj. Though in the official statistics Ram Track did not come up as dominating the field, the team did show others that Mt. Rainier had potential and was willing to work to attain their goals. In personal as well as team achievements, two new records speak for themselves. lohn Webster, senior, broke the previous school record of 22.2 in the 220 Dash with a time of 22.0. Dean Wilson, also a senior, vaulted 13' 1 0172" breaking the pre- vious record of 13'10". These personal achieve- ments combined with the entire teams sportsmanship resulted in fourteen athletes qual- ifying for West Central District, and the two re- cord breakers went on to compete in the State Championships. Coach Cordes and the Ram Track Team of '79 deserves a round of applause from the Student Body of Mt. 'fi' maui ' ' 'W ' X it Ramtrack The 1979 Ram Track team was a young team. Sixteen of the members were either sophomores or juniors new to the prog- ram with only ten girls returning from the previous season. Despite their youth, the season went well, with a string of successful accomplishments. Five school records were broken. Eighteen girls qualified for the NPSL conference meet while two girls, Leanne Malmo and loni French advanced into the state meet to take on the state's most skilled competitors. In two major track events, our team took fourth in the NPSL, and third in the Highline relays. Mt. Rainier's team of Pam Gossman, loni French and Crystal Hamilton also set a new shot put records in the Highline relays. Young competition and high ambition combined to form a truly successful season. The club competes on a regional, state and national basis in several skills areas. These various areas are in typing, shorthand, filing, and business machines. The club has been involved in a number of activities this year, including the student directory, a cake baking contest, Santa-grams, Vala-grams, organizing the basketball pro- grams, and participating in a jog-a-thon. Rainer. You may ask how I9 confused people managed to organize a yearbook that was actually printed right side up. Admittedly, we had some heya. This years Annual Staff would like to express their gratitude to Mr. George Somoff and his assistant photogra- phers Mark Oswald and Donn Northquist, for their patience, effort, and terrific pic- tures! Also, many thanks go to Mr. Jim Palm, field supervisor, who put many hours into this annual. The Annual Staff would like to give special thanks to our beloved leader Mr. Gene Sartore , the mastermind behind the operations. We greatly qppreciate his advice, patience and all his hard work! More than likely this yearbook would not exist without the assistance of these dedicated individuals. ' AT Xa w' - , , L.. Mkxqa xr- ' I ' lm M, W ,- 'F' .
