Our first step began with the fundamentals of education: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Our steps progressed slowly and in doing so we lost our beginner ' s shakiness. On the eighth rung we lingered because we were beginning to realize a part of what lay before us. Our footsteps lost their unsureness and gained a feeling of security and hopefulness as we prepared for the last four rungs which would be the most important. Each one of us held some excitement, anticipation, and, of course, fear in his heart as we entered the high school hall that first day of school in the fall of 1960. We had been going to school for eight previous years, but this was a new experience, one we weren ' t likely to soon forget. We were all very aware of the fact that we needed strong, competent leaders and we elected Carole Alexander, class president; Dave Tarlton, vice-president; Judy Snider, secretary; and Howard Boger, treasurer. Miss Ruth James, Dr. Brown McAllister, Coach Arden Ray, and Mr. Wayne Woodward served as advisors during our freshman year. We were very glad to have Brenda White and Brenda Frick elected to positions as cheerleaders. Carole Alexander represented our class on the girls ' basketball team and Dave Tarlton on the football team. Two of our girls, Libby Sneed and Jeanette Kluttz, were chosen as majorettes in the " Marching Tigers " band. To complete a year of happy memories we held a class party at Frye ' s Lake. As we began our sophomore year we were a little more hopeful for now we would no longer be called " lowly freshmen. " Once again we realized the need for capable leaders and we elected Micheal Eudy, class president; Danny Brafford, vice-president; and Beverly Auten, secretary-treasurer. Those who advised us were Miss Loretta Sharpe, Mr. Morgan Walker, and Mr. Kenneth Cherry. We were very proud this year that so many of our students were active in sports. We had four girls on the girls ' basketball team; twelve boys on tire football team; and one boy on the baseball team. Beverly Auten represented our class as Christmas attendant. Wanda Lowder, Beverly Auten, Anne Casper, and Kathy Barringer were chosen as lettergirls and Carolyn Plott joined the majorettes in the band. W e were highly pleased with our eighteen sophomores who were tapped for the Beta Club. They were as follows; Brenda Frick, Danny B ra f f o rd, Teresa Patterson, Peggy Fortune, Patricia Hammill, Harold Almond, Beverly Auten, Freda Bamhardt, Kathy Barringer, Anne Casper, Angela Ritchie, Brenda Scott, Jo Anne Sehom, Dave Tarlton, Linda Drye, Tamara Scott, Mary Ann Gandy, and Brenda Love. Our sophomore marshals were Anne Casper, Jo Anne Sehom, Brenda Frick, and Kathy Barringer. At the end of the school year we again held a class party at Frye ' s Lake. We felt like veterans of the school when we returned in the fall of 1962 as the junior class. Qualities of great leadership were shown in the students we chose as officers. Ronnie Barrier was elected as class president; Dennis Swygert, vice-president; Danny Brafford, secretary; and Carole Alexander, treasurer. Our junior marshals were Brenda Frick, Kathy Barringer, Anne Casper, and Harold Almond. This year we placed ten boys on the football team; five girls on the girls ' basketball team; and three boys on the baseball team. Brenda Frick was selected as Junior Miss Hi Miss and Carolyn Plott was chosen by the student body as Christmas queen. Her at- tendants from our class were Anne Casper, Kathy Barringer, and Brenda Frick. Angela Ritchie was chosen Editor of our annual and Brenda White, Assistant Editor. We were eager and enthusiastic to start selling magazines when representatives came to Mount Pleasant. We were very suc- cessful in reaching our goal. Libby cook was top salesman with Johnsie Russ and Ronald Gandy following closely behind. We were just as excited as we measured for our class rings, wondering how we could wait until mid-term of 1964 to get them. We attended College Day at Winecoff in November, but this was a very minute trip compared to our marvelous Washington trip in April. It was a very wonderful, educational, and unforgettable experience. In May we entertained the senior class of 1963 at the annual Jr. -Sr. Banquet which was held at our own school. The theme we chose was " Midnight in Athens " and was carried out beautifully in the decorations. Our advisors, Miss Loretta Sharpe, Mrs. I. J. Ray, and Miss Rosa James were very helpful in our preparation for this memorable occasion. In the spring of 1963 we went home with pride in our hearts and a " new " word on our lips, SENIOR, for now that ' s exactly what we were. We returned in the fall determined to make this our best and most unforgettable year at Mount Pleasant High School. We began by electing Robert Whitley, class president; Alvin Hurlocker, vice-president; Ronald Gandy, secretary; and Martha Richards, treasurer. Our advisors, Mr. Ben Adron Shue, Mrs. Emma Crowe, and Mrs. I. J. Ray were very helpful in encouraging us to make final preparations for our " plunge " into the world of ever-changing responsibilities. We had much confidence in our boys on the football team. Alvin Hurlocker was made captain with Dennis Swygert as alternate captain. The other players from our class were Dave Tarlton, Ronnie Barrier, Ted Rhinehardt, John Block, Harold Almond and Clarence Fink. The Girls ' basketball team contained four seniors consisting of Faye Drye and Carole Alexander who were Captains; Mary Eudy and Jo Anne Sehom also played superior ball. Dave Tarlton, Dennis Swygert and Bruce Smith represented the seniors on the boys ' team. Many honors were placed on members of our class. Ronnie Barrier was elected as president of the Student Council. Anne Casper was chosen as Miss D. A. R. by the seniors and the faculty. Jack Stegall was made drum major for the " Marching Tigers. " Libby Sneed was chosen by the student body as Homecoming queen, with Beverly Auten, Brenda White, Judy Snider, and Carolyn Plott as her attendants. A few weeks later Judy Cline was elected Christmas queen. Her attendants were Anne Casper, Brenda Frick, and Doris Gulledge. Each of us holds m uch love and gratitude in his heart for one of our classmates who has not been with us in presence for the past four years, but who certainly has held a place in our daily thoughts. Tutored by private teachers, he has received a first class education. We are proud to have Jackie Bost as a member of the Senior Class of 1964. We will remember this rung of the ladder as the most important. For some of us this is the last step of our education. From this last rung we can now look back on the ground where we once stood and see the footprints of the little children who are approaching, and of the adults who once trod this same ladder. We review the past, but we look to the future with the realization that we must make the best of the life to come. All the light and serious moments of the past t welve years have been crystallized into memories which we shall always cherish. We, the Senior Class of 1964, sincerely hope that we shall be remembered as one of the most outstanding and largest classes ever to graduate from Mount Pleasant High School. We are proud graduates!
