It was one of C7hristianity's earliest bastions in Japan. During the long seclusion of the Tokugawa era. the fanshaped island of Deshima, off its shores. was the western foothold in Japan. It was the backdrop for Puccini's Madam Butterfly --the love story of an American naval oriicer and a beautiful Japanese woman. It achieved the horrible distinction of being our second atomic target in the last war. Statues of a demolished church are the reminders of the human grief as the city rebuilds.
