TO THE CLASS OF 1952: A few short years ago you entered Mount Joy High School as freshmen. We have watched your growth through these years and have shared your successes and failures. It is with'mingled emotions that we see you standing at one of the great milestones of your life - high school graduation. This event is not an end but a beginningg it is the opening of a door into larger opportunities. Through this door you will go into your chosen area of liv- ing, lwhether it be homemaking, industry or higher education. The worth of your education will soon be proved, not by school examinations, but by how well you have learned to apply the lessons of industry, integrity, dependability, honesty, court- esy and cooperation to the problems of everyday living. As you join the alumni of Mount Joy High School, we trust that you will give the same loyal support and cooperation to the schools as you have ever done as pupils. Your alma mater, your parents and your teachers feel justly proud of you and will be in- terested witnesses of your progress. Our best wishes go with each of you. It sounded as if they were planning a New York trip, so I crawled right over to ask Miss Zeller what it was all about. Miss Zeller told me that all they needed was permission and money. A committee and I went to the school board and asked their permission. Permission was granredg then all we needed was money. I helped the kids sell their magazines first. Then we braved the cold and rain -to have a food stand at the Community Exhibit. Since the cast for the senior play d1dn't include a worm, Icouldn't prove my talents ln that field. Even though the had to go on without me, they were a big success. But we still needed more money, so we decided to sell fruit cakes. And like every senior classwe also had the ice cream and candy concessions. We worked hard and made a lot of money. Now I must go pack my suitcase and get ready for my trip to New York, V D Pres. THE CLASS OF 1952 Z X 9 "f7""'f""!f'fluxuwgs 'F if 7 XX -Z 27 670144 .Mafory FRESHMAN I first met the Class of '52 ' way back in i948 when they first entered these halls as eager, but scared, greenhorns. They launched the freshman year by electing Donald Thome, president: Paul Fitzkee, vice-president, Pat Brooks, secretaryg and Gerald Berrier, treasurer. Although this was their first year, I must admit that they did pretty well in the magazine campaign and their two basketball concessions. Pat Brooks and Frank Eichler were their attendants in the May Queen's Court and the class was represented in the student council by Sally Nissley and Gerald Wilson. SOP HOMORE Now as sophomores they were a bit more confident. They elected Earl Shelley as presi- dent,Gerald Wilson, vice-president, Pat Brooks, secretaryg and Gerald Berrier, treasurer. Their student council representatives were Sally Nissley and Donald Thome. The activities of the class this year centered around the annual May l-lop. They were quite excited about the dance, which proved very successful with itsthemeof balloons. Pat Brooks and Harry Sheetz were attendants to the May Queen. Near the end of their sophomore year the class ordered their school rings. Now they were really part of Mount Joy High. JUNIOR Opening the junior year, they chose their class colors, forest green and white, and ordered jackets, pennants and hats. Officers this year were Earl Shelley, president: Harry Sheetz, vice- president, Pat Brooks, secretary, and Gerald Berrier, treasurer. Their main objective now was to increase the class funds and this they did by selling wri- ting paper and stickers and by sponsoring the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. Itook Winnie to that dance and, boy, did we have fun. The Centennial certainly helped out the Class of '52. They sold Sister of the Swish tickets, conducted a food stand at the pageant, and also sold programs. Claudette Zeller and Earl Shelley attended the May Queen. Sally Nissley, Loretta Kline and Robert Schneider were elected to the National Honor Society. The '52er's entertained the seniors at a semi-formal prom in May, with the decorations centering around a ship. At the end of the year Earl Shelley was elected president of student council for the coming year. SENIOR As the Class of '52 entered their last year in M. I. H. S, , they became aware of the busy year ahead of them. Their class officers were president, Loretta Kline, vice-president, Donald Thomeg Pat Brooks, secretary, and Sally Nissley, treasurer, They were represented in student council by Loretta Kline, Bob Schneider and Mary Ann Spangler. The first undertaking of the year was the Community Exhibit stand. fl found a hotl dog which had been thrown away, and Winnie and I had it for supper that night.j Next wasthe play, Gai fl, ELO-W1Cl-ligg-ll, with Paul Fitzkee in the leading role. This was the most successful event of the year. Now it was time to start work on the yearbook and, boy, did they workl Sally Nissley served as editor-in-chief, The seniors got permission from Mr. Beahm and the school board to go to New York in- stead of Washington in the spring. Now as they look forward to Class Day, Baccalaureate and Commencement, the Class of '52 are a happy group and proud of all their accomplishments. 28 WWW J -4 F055 Ong QTo the Tune of "Sin"j Take away the freshman year, It would surely be a sing Take away the fun we had then, It's a sin. Since Winnie had already caught me, I could enjoy myself in a re- signed sort of way, When the juniors were rehearsing for their play, we could hardly wait to see it. We enjoyed it so much that we almost burst our skin laughing. In May we were really busy, First we saw the May Queen crowned at the sophomores' May Hop. A contract was signed and soon boxes of instructions began to arrive. Willie heard the seniors discussing the different yearbook covers, but finally they all decided on one. Appoint- ments were made for the seniors' pictures. Articles were assigned and work on a class song, his- tory and the will was begun. Seniors covered the town trying to get ads. Each day brought a new worry. "How shall I write this article?" "Did you get that ad yet?" "Didn't you get that plc- ture yet?" "Hurry, we must meet the deadline. " The articles were checked and typed, and rechecked and retyped. Fitzkee drew so many worms, he must have seen them in his sleep. He and Willie became bosom pals. Pictures were measured and pasted on the dummy. At last the final layout was made. How happy all the seniors were, The result of their hurry, worry, and fun is this record of their years-and Willie 's-at Mount Joy High School. At present the council is divided into four main committees, with each assigned to a special duty. The four committees are the social committee, with Mrs. Almeda Griffith as adviser and Mary Ann Spangler as chairman, the assembly committee, with Mr. George Houck as adviser and Loretta Klinel as chairmang the publicity committee, with Miss Thelma Taylor and Miss Marilyn Young as advisers and Robert Schroll as chairmang the service committee, with Miss Patricia Werner as adviser and Robert Schneider as acting chairman. Willie explained further that the student council body is composed of the president of each class plus two additional representatives from each class. Earl Shelley was voted president of the council by the student body. The following officers assist him: Tom Kear, vice-president: Loretta Kl1ne,secreraryg Betty Lou Frank, treasurer. Mrs. Margaret Williams is the adviser. Student council has accomplished many worthwhile projects since its reorganization in the fall of 1946. It has sponsored teen-age night every Wednesday night and movies whose funds purchased a new movie projector. At Christmas time, student council makes the annual Christmas party posible. Dur- ing the entire year this governing body represents the students and presents their problems and suggestions for school improvement. They check out books, take charge of the students' library permits, and help pupils who come into the library to find the information they want. There are now 94 members in this chorus, 35 boys and SQ girls. They sing mainly two-part music. This year, as in previous years, the Junior Chorus participated in the Christmas program. I see Mr. Houck, the director, picking up his baton to get the practice underway. Now we are practicing for our annual spring concert held in May. This year we will play music by Jerome Kern. So this concert should really be different from previous ones, Have you seen the flashy new red skirts and white boots worn by our color guards, banner girls, and three bell lyre players? They sure look nice. This is one of the improvements made in the band this year, For the first time in the history of the band, all uniforms were used. So you see, our band is in- creasing in size and it will continue to grow. Also, for the first time, the seniors were awarded a six-inch chenille music lyre. These awards will be presented each year to the seniors who are in the band. l think everyone will agree that Mount Joy has the snappiest band in the county. Her special friend, John, portrayed by Earl Shelley, is in love with her. Esther Smith fShirley Hawthornej appears vibrant and with Fred fGerald Berriery adds to the romantic interest. Mr. Smith fDonald Thomey is trying to get the family to move to New York but the children sure don't want to go. Paul Fitzkee, as Grandpa, comforts the children but Tootie fGeorgann Shattoy and Agnes fClaudette Zellerj have different ideas and do just about anything from derailing a trolley to getting Mr. Smith fired, to keep the family in St. Louis. Asher Neiss, as Lon, makes an excellent older and handsome brother, who is wild about Lucille Uane Wisegarvery but finally appreciates the qualities of Ida Uean Darrenkampy, the girl next door. Sally Nissley, as Mrs, Smith, helps keep the family together. The Irish cook, Katie QDoris Lintonj, makes the most delicious drumsticks. CI got the crumbsg Mr. Dodge QRobert Williamsy and Mr. Duffy CRobert Schneiderj do well as Mr. Smith's business associates. The play is directed by Miss Catharine Zeller, who is assisted by Loretta Kline and Mar- lene Zimmerman. 52 gagrief WaLe5 f Willie reporting again, November 8, 1951. After a mad chase the senior play cast, in- cluding me, arrived at the exclusive Howard Johnson's. These kids really celebrate in style but then they have reasons to. Their play, Gabriel, Blow Your Hornl, proved to be very successful this first night. Q- -- The play took place in the summer cabin of Miss Thelma Smith fLoretta Klinel, located in the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina. Gabriel Pennington QPaul Fitzkeej, his wife Zerusia qLorraine Darrenkamp, and daughter Daisy Mae QClaudette Zellerj took care of the cabin for Miss Smith. Miss Smith arrived with her niece Janet fMary Ann Spanglerjg Harold Dillon Q Asher Neissj, who was interested in Janetg and Mildred Clyde fShirley Hawthornej, Frank Stephens qGerald Berriery, Eleanor Barnes QGeorgann Shattop, and Pete Wright qRobert Schneiderj, some of Janet's friends, who helped make the play exciting. Herbert Brown, Jr., fRoberr Sherkl, who loved Janet, came disguised as Cousin Sam Pennington just to be near Janet without Miss Smith's know- ing it. When Mr. Herbert Brown, Sr., fllobert Williamsj came in search of his son, fell off the cliff and hurt himself, the fireworks really started. But Miss Smith soon forgave and forgot everything and the play ended with Miss Smith and Mr. Brown's making wedding plans andjanet and Herb's doing the same. Gabriel, in spite of everything, thought of only his chicken breast, which he ate at the close of the play, Miss Catharine G. Zeller again directed the play. Koofem jigltf ailarcl WeeWillie was kept busy racing up and down the field during the soccer games, but he came up with the following deductions: Lack of experience can be called the chief cause of the failure of this year's soccer team. The Rams lost the first four games by very close scores. As the season moved along and they gained more ex- perience, their record improved. In the second half the team won one, lost one, and tied two. The high point of the season was the West Lampeter game, when the team finally showed a little spark. Since the team will lose only four lettermen this year by graduation, the booters should be very successful next year. The first string line will be retuming as well as the halfbacks, one fullback and the goalie. Next year's captain, Ben Clinger, said the team will try to get back on the right track. The team was coached by Mr. John D. Day, assisted by Gerald Wilson and Frank Zimmerman. 57 First Row: Mayer, Schneider, Wilson, Neiss, Nissley, managers. CLITL6 .idft jl"Ol'l'l .Si'l'6LfCA Losing an entire varsity squad would be quite a headache to any coach, and Mr. George Houck was not an exception. Even Willie felt sick. With last year's championship team gone, the varsity had to be built from last year's junior varsity squad. However, in the pre-sea- son practices, the squad showed surprisingly more strength than had been anticipated, The squad was much taller than last year's team, although not so fast.
