Commander Barron C. Nelson is a native of Stockton, California. He graduated from Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Candidate Program on September 18, 1964. His first tour of duty was on board the USS FIREDRAKE (AE-14), homeported in Port Chicago, California. Subsequent shipboard tours included the USS HIGBEE (DD-806), USS TAWASA (ATF-92) as Commanding Officer, and USS KISKA (AE- 35) as Executive Officer. Some of Commander Nelson ' s shore tours have been on the staff of Naval Destroyer School, Flag Secretary of the Pacific Training Command, and a placement officer and special assistant in the Surface Warfare Officer Assignment Division of the Naval Military Personnel Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During his career. Comm ander Nelson has been awarded two Navy Commendation Medals, a Navy Achievement Medal and several other personal and unit awards. He is married to the former Kimberly Allison von Alt of Syosset, New York. They have two daughters, Michaely and Laura. Commander Nelson ' s family resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
