An English MajorExplains. Oh, Moungtl Holyoke we pay thee tuition Wi't:hjtfheV'f7f,ervor of youth that's gone wrong Eachjkyear it gets higher and higher My God, Alma Mater, how long? So from barroom to bedroom we stagger ln the spirit of free love for all Our drinks are too strong and our morals gone Mount Holyoke what's iappening to me? Mount Holyoke what's happening to me? Line I - Well, nobody can argue with that. l Line 2 - While I take the position that it is highly commendable for youths to pay for their own educations, I personally can not think of a single student who becomes so beside herself that she wantonly overpays her tuition and, furthermore, can not be prevented from doing so. Certainly something has gone wrong if we have a campus full of women uncontrolably writing checks to the school. I have never seen this happen and frankly, I don't belive it does -why are we perpetrating this myth? Line 3 - Exactly what does it refer to? There are several possibilities, let us explore them: aj Mount Holyoke. Plate tectonics aside, this seem silly. bj Youth. Human beings are, undeniably, getting taller as the centuries pass, but why bring it up here? cb Eervor. I don't think a fervor can get higher, or lower for that matter, move on. dj Tuition. Probably the best choice. Line 4 - It is wicked and sinful to refer to Alma Mater Qwhoever she may bej as God. The author is probably confusing her with Mary Lyon, but even so. . .Now as to this how long business, how long what? Was this song written by an existentialist? Line 5 - Well I suppose after a long day of writing checks it is understandable that anyone would stagger. But where is this enormous barroom? The CI seats I5O on a good day. It must be a metaphor for library. . .and then there's this large bedroom. Well I've never seen it, but if I were a prospective freshman and I thought I was going to have to share a room with 2,000 other women, I'd go somewhere else. This song gives a totally unrealisticpicture of Mount Holyoke, and something had better be done about it. y Line 6 - This explains the staggering... we are staggering in spirit. No wonder -look at the nonsense we're singing. And staggering in the spirit of free love no less. Love had better be free because all the money is going to tuition just as fast as checks can be written. This line has no redeeming value and should be removed. Line 7 - Now what kind of judge is a staggering spirit who writes checks all day? I don't trust this free-love - waif's gustatorial opinions and neither does anyone else. So be it. Next line. Line 8 - Now this is really silly. Not only is it silly, but Cas those of you who have read ahead knowj it is repeated. Any idiot who is foolishly writing check after check to MHC is going to be confused, and hence, her asking the question Mount Holyoke what's happening to me? is not surprising. In fact, it is quite in order and the rest of us sincerely wish she had asked many lines earlier. , - Line 9 - Redundency, although some can get away with it, is not to be wished for, or allowed here. Cut the line. lf. . Therefore, I suggest the following emendations. Mount Holyoke we pay thee tuition With checks Each year it gets higher and higher But we get more checks What's up Mary Lyon? We have a great time Yeah, yeah I'm lost - Think I'II try the Krishnas ..iA -pk W- .,, V. wg .f-.1'.-.V ' gl.. j . ' w A ff,-. ' I8
