Oh, Moungtl Holyoke we pay thee tuition Wi't:hjtfheV'f7f,ervor of youth that's gone wrong Eachjkyear it gets higher and higher My God, Alma Mater, how long? So from barroom to bedroom we stagger ln the spirit of free love for all Our drinks are too strong and our morals gone Mount Holyoke what's iappening to me? Mount Holyoke what's happening to me? Line I - Well, nobody can argue with that. l Line 2 - While I take the position that it is highly commendable for youths to pay for their own educations, I personally can not think of a single student who becomes so beside herself that she wantonly overpays her tuition and, furthermore, can not be prevented from doing so. Certainly something has gone wrong if we have a campus full of women uncontrolably writing checks to the school. I have never seen this happen and frankly, I don't belive it does -why are we perpetrating this myth? Line 3 - Exactly what does "it "refer to? There are several possibilities, let us explore them: aj Mount Holyoke. Plate tectonics aside, this seem silly. bj Youth. Human beings are, undeniably, getting taller as the centuries pass, but why bring it up here? cb Eervor. I don't think a fervor can get higher, or lower for that matter, move on. dj Tuition. Probably the best choice. Line 4 - It is wicked and sinful to refer to Alma Mater Qwhoever she may bej as God. The author is probably confusing her with Mary Lyon, but even so. . .Now as to this "how long" business, how long what? Was this song written by an existentialist? Line 5 - Well I suppose after a long day of writing checks it is understandable that anyone would stagger. But where is this enormous barroom? The CI seats I5O on a good day. It must be a metaphor for library. . .and then there's this large bedroom. Well I've never seen it, but if I were a prospective freshman and I thought I was going to have to share a room with 2,000 other women, I'd go somewhere else. This song gives a totally unrealisticpicture of Mount Holyoke, and something had better be done about it. y Line 6 - This explains the staggering... we are staggering in spirit. No wonder -look at the nonsense we're singing. And staggering in the spirit of free love no less. Love had better be free because all the money is going to tuition just as fast as checks can be written. This line has no redeeming value and should be removed. Line 7 - Now what kind of judge is a staggering spirit who writes checks all day? I don't trust this free-love - waif's gustatorial opinions and neither does anyone else. So be it. Next line. Line 8 - Now this is really silly. Not only is it silly, but Cas those of you who have read ahead knowj it is repeated. Any idiot who is foolishly writing check after check to MHC is going to be confused, and hence, her asking the question "Mount Holyoke what's happening to me?" is not surprising. In fact, it is quite in order and the rest of us sincerely wish she had asked many lines earlier. , - Line 9 - Redundency, although some can get away with it, is not to be wished for, or allowed here. Cut the line. lf. . Therefore, I suggest the following emendations. Mount Holyoke we pay thee tuition With checks Each year it gets higher and higher But we get more checks What's up Mary Lyon? We have a great time Yeah, yeah I'm lost - Think I'II try the Krishnas ..iA -pk W- .,, V. wg .f-.1'.-.V"' gl.. j . ' w A ff,-. This however, was actually a ploy invoked by Mary Lyon to ensure funding for what has become one of her most successful misadventures. The real myth - and to some, it istsimply that - is related here, unadulterated, unequivocal, and certainly unaccredited. While on a iaunt through the Berkshire Hills with her trusted companion "Spot" Porter Cnamed, of course, for her beloved Deaconj early in l837, Ms. Lyon happened upon a band of roving and wild women. Feminists, they might have been called, though that term has only of late gained recognition. Chanting ecclesiastics of their mode, similar to today's "I am Woman, hear me roar," they invited Mary to join them on their rampage to wreck havoc on the so-called 'civilized' minds of men - to the point where men would bow down and listen to thetway things really are. Ms. Lyon was enchanged, yet the group lacked or- ganization, had little political theory, and could not find their way out of the woods. Yes, they confessed, they were out of luck, out of bucks, and generally life sucked. Now, Ms. Lyon was a woman of many virtues and aspirations' and saw her chance right away to have a purpose, stay unmarried Cfor the Deacon would rather eat his hat than get divorcedj and be gainfully employed. Like Moses, she claimed she would set her people free and find a way out of the wilderness, as long as she was head of administration. For forty days and thirty-nine nights, she fasted, scraping every nickle and half-pence she could to afford air-fare 'to the Bahamas, where she and her newly acquired sisters could bask free of domination under the sultry tropical sun. For weeks at a stretch Cnot including Fri- day night or Saturdayb, she studied what little there was of the constitutional rights of women, Darwinian Theory on the Origin of the Species of Women, and other such great works - all of which were compiled by those who knew the least about us - Men. She was, to say the least, disgusted with what she found. Even the dear Deacon was showing chauvinistic tendencies and refused to aid her in her quest. CThat's when she told the Misses Deacon J Finally, faint with starvation and boggled by bullshit, she set out to tell her sisters the sad news. She could not find a way out. She was handing in her resignation. Fate, however, sweet woman of mystery that she is, intervened. Poor Ms. Lyon, bedraggled and forlorn, got lost in the woods. She eventually found her way to the top of a mountain Ctake a wild guess to which one . . .All those who claim Mount Tom will have their skis permanently embedded in their septumj, where a glorious sight awaited her. At first she thought it was an apparition of her fatiques mind, yet it was so tangible, so real, so . . . so . . . goddess-like. It was a nun - a flying nun! No! It was Wisdom, surrounded with the classics of all times and with a great big pile of panganastical literature in her arms. .t . She beckoned Ms. Lyon to her, saying: "What thou comest for, know I not, yet what thou askest, shall I grant be it within the realm of human understanding, but you gotta help me file my books first." Ms. Lyon, an industrious person and not meek at all, deftly organized Wisdom's books according to the Cutter classification, lovingly fondling those that men had not seen fit to publish - those on the equality of all humans and most especially those written by women for women. Then, she approached Wisdom with her quest, saying, "I come to seek the Holy Grail of Women. This is my quest - it is at least in the understanding of us to have the shackles of Man lifted from the neck of my sisters." ' Wisdom benevolently smiled on her, saying. "Take these. my daughter, in rememberence of me. Use them wisely and you shall gain your freedom." Sheburdened dear Mary down with the world of knowledge and then faded into the mist, having found a protectress for her fortress. ' ' Ms. Lyon yodelled in joy. It was the signal for her sisters to loin her. They came in droves, in flocks, in thousands, and praised Mary to the end of her sensibilities. Quite lady-like, she swooned. When she awoke, the women of the hills had built housing and a general class-room area Ccomplete with labsj where they could all sit over tea or whiskey sours, depending on their vice, and discuss out of ear-shot of all males Cwho would certainly strip them of their eruditionb their newly acquired knowledge. But, as Ms. Lyon, with far more lofty goals, pointed out - what good was such education if it could not be utilized? disciples of Wisdom and in servitude to nothing else. Major concentration areas would of course be for the establishment of a lil After much debate, itgwas decided that they would indeed carry the word - after all, that was their original purpose - as sisterhood Cwhere they could discuss things in privatej and ultimately for the appreciation of themselves as Women. The ' minds of men would no longer be allowed to remain ignorant. To accomplish these ends, however, they would either have to meet under the cover of darkness or in a form socially acceptable to the times. Darkness was out - for fear of the boogey man. Ms. Lyon, with her propensity towards' religion, suggested a seminary. There-in, they could meet without suspicion, amass great amounts of facts and figures, and conquer the ' world under the guise of do-gooders. The stage was set for rebellion. Mary was still determined to get to the Bahamas, and a 1 missionary was the perfect disguise. l ' - v - , - - N "f ', -' -J ..., -' . w -A 4- j, ggta. The seminary would be used as a veil- a subversive measure for protection. The ultimate goal was sworn to and toasted with Food Service been the solemn oath was taken: Education of Women Only. Thus, when funding was arranged Qthat in itself is another talej, and new class-rooms and dormitories were built to accomo- date the advancing hoard, the architects were instructed to install no urinals in any of the buildings. This at last put men at the mercy of women - a measure that still exists today. The rest of the story more or less follows the outlines of prescribed history. The seminary turned college in I888, at the will of women of other religions and those not interested in the topic at all. It endures through today as the finest example of what a woman in the wilderness can do when confronted with little outlet of expression save for that which was given to her alone - the wisdom of her own self as a collective whole. 40 . In the serenity of the Five-College Valley, nestled snuggly between Mt. Tom, Chap DeLaine's, and Amherst, our beloved institution is the most tranquil of spots. What could possibly be more condusive to the getting-done of the writing that satisfies one's soul- whether that be the creation of the next Harlequin Romance, final revisions of the Communist Manifesto or something in between? All this brings one question to mind: Why did Emily Dickenson leave? Emily did not just leave - she was driven away ...by tofu. lt started innocently enough. Emily was quietly writing her poetry, and being a young poet, was working hard at all the basics: rhyme schemes, alliteration - a little onamatopoeia on the side maybe, but nothing too serious. And then it happened - a tofu- l ball in tomato sauce appeared on her plate one night at supper, a few days later a tofu stroganoff. Emily was delighted by this new dish and, wanting to share her love of tofu with the world, determined to write at least an ode, to tofu. Now, there are not many words that rhyme with tofu Cnear rhymes yes, but actual tofu-true rhymes noj and Emily's attempts were frustrated by this lack. Soon tofu haunted her dreams and the menu was merciless . . . sweet and sour tofu, tofu tetrazini, tofu kabobs, tofu scallopini, whole, naked, dead tofus on the salad bar. Rhyme schemes started to slip, iambs turned into trochees, dactyls were hopeless. Finally, a tofu and pimento quiche threw Emily into such a state that she fled campus to the relative safety of an attic in Amherst where she hid until promised that tofu as a food should never be served at her table or brought into her sight, and that tofu, as a word would never be mentioned in her presence. Emily Dickenson died a broken woman, never having successfully written a poem containing the word tofu. ,f l 2I6 l x , I ,ss r X xl ' I . .I .y, Q . - -.f-"Q ' 5, wr 'iw-wu.,,, ,,,, W ,J HA ,J XJ .-,,, , q -.wi .4,L,,. 0 - 3,2 A , -' -- .L T' , .,,. f-' .-"Wav-in - ' -1 rr in ., ' .X A 1? aw . Yet it is an integral part of the l837th infantry of the Mount Holyoke Army. These brazen rookies have ac- cepted the challenge to survive. ' T As they approach the front line, the admirable foot soldiers detect chaotic, almost barbaric, pandemonium, but, surging ahead with little loss of enthusiasm, they arrive at the main line of fire. Upon reaching the combat zone, the young recruits dodge oscillating explosives rico- cheting to the relentless beat of "You Dropped the Bomb on Me". They head for the fuel station and, on the way, sight bombers picking up ballistic missiles Cobviously not from their armyj and various forms of guerrilla warfare in the far corners. Finally, the brave enrolled women Cl mean enlisted womenj reach the target area, fuel up, and must now battle their way through the jungle to the relief station. After numer- ous detours around areas of intense combat, the infantry comes with- in sight of the second target point. Ducking hand-held, purple and white grenades which discourage invaders by showering them with alcoholic fall-out and, thus, contiminating their fatigues with intoxica- tive waste, the troops arrive at the relief station. When inside,.with a moment of peace from the surrounding melee, the infantry discusses the battle plan and consults with their seniors. What's the plan? RE- TREAT! Their seniors have recalled the troops for it is Ol3O hours. They have accomplished their mission, they have survived. I Rx 1 vafrf, ,.X, 1.
