And in spite of whatever feelings we might have about our stay here, we must concede that we have all yielded to the tide of change. Freshman year, the four years seemed to stretch out endlessiy, while all the stories of the "good old college days" filled our heads. "What", we asked, "is good about four bluebooks, three papers, and four hundred pages of reading?" Unfortunately no one really answered our question. Instead we were told that work at Mt. Holyoke was roughg was that not true of any good school? When upset about our grades we were pacified with the notion that "every- one" knew that a 'B' at Mt. Holyoke was worth an 'A' any place else. Nevertheless, as our class shrank in number during sophomore year, it was evident that disillusionment was in the air-and in the spring the number of us going away on the Exchange or abroad was phenomenal. Yet the September of junior year promised a change. We had a place-we knew more people on campus, we produced a showg we were the BIG sisters now! Time instead of dragging, was racing, and we were forced to face the question of what to do after graduation. The rest of the story is fairly clear. Our personal trials and tribulations were many varied. Each person will have to individually assess the value of the education she has received here. But together we grew, we worked, and playedg sharing experiences, dreams and fears. So now, we present to you-the best years of our lives. 3 1 gf' 'I' A 4 ,...-X -1-:ff "Mount Holyoke means workg but some days when I get caught up with test tubes and lab reports, and independent work and bluebooks, and ..., and ..., and . . . GOODYEAR Psychology-Education LESLIE A. MILLER Political Science 3- "It seems so strange to be leaving Mount Holyoke. We thought that perhaps we were here, secure, for at least a short lifetime. Four years, begun in 1969, stretched out endlessly. Now we spend our last spring, our last winter, our last autumn but so many of us, although we're so eager to leave, will leave not believ- ing that we are that old. My father told me that "these are the best years of your Iife." I believed him firmly as a freshman when I drank beer at Amherst, joyously road-tripped to Dartmouth, and partied through the night at UMass. I doubted him respectfully during sophomore slump, when there were no parties. And I began to realize what he meant struggling through two English novels a week, twelve hours of lab every week, three eight o'cIocks Cas a juniorlj and long long discussions with the best of friends. Senior year seems to be a neces- sary time for synthesizing what I have learned here. As well as discovering new wonders, I'm taking comps in "Life at Mount Holyoke," a non-credit, compulsory, four-year course for everyone in all classes. It is a time for more reflection on what these four years have done for me and what I've done with them. And be- cause of this I've found out more of what's happening to me, and what may happen. A growing awareness dawns at odd moments when I realize that I must finally leave, an awareness that leaves me grateful for the time I've had here, to grow unhindered by worldly realities. My friends have be- come some of the most valued and precious symbols of the time here. If I have gained a little appreciation of the beauty of other people, it has been worth my while. I am also grateful for the realization of the small- ness of my world and how little I really know. I thought once that there was nothing left for me to do, but now I can despair at the shortness of my life because there is too much to do. I feel a beginning of wis- dom, a very small bud, and very green. These have been the best years of my life-so far. Because of these, I know there will be more." BARBARA G. KUBIDA MARILYN J. Tough luck-you got to meet me instead of my brother. On the topic of meeting, I think we shouldg in fact, I'm eager to meet you. Greg has already disappointed me with the infor- mation that you're traveling this next weekend for a Glee Club concert. If indeed, this weekend is out, I'm hoping the next weekend is "in." Although my classes end, I'm planning on staying around several more days. Write me C1275 Yale Station, N.H., Ct., 065203 or pass a note via our mutual friend-or just come. I re- member when comps were so horrible that they neglected the learning experience, when Yale was considered a dressy school, art classes were in Dwight, and Miss Ludwig gave the weight of our class in tons. I wonder what the Freshman ten came to? I remember housemothers, the Old C.l. and running to answer the phone in the hall. In a sense, MHC has been getting it together. All of a sudden your life passes before your eyes, and you're so nervous you can't stop going to the bathroom, let alone walk to Carr to take your Chem comps. The thought of four years of hard work being on the line is more than I can bear. Somehow there must be a better way to "tie together" what one has learned. That old ex- cuse has been used too many timesg not only for comps, but also for ridiculously hard as- signments. I realize that in the process of edu- cation one must be constantly growing, and striving for a goal, but what does one gain in a pressure cooker atmosphere? If one asks, "Do you think the system was made for your con- venience?", my only answer is, "lt should be." 246 SHARON C PACKEY ELAINE C. SCHEIB American Culture if? BARBARA A.
