Koawell Gray Ham by Henry Rox, 194() Nantucket, Dec. 3, 1957 To the Class of 1958: Through the thoughtful offices of the Alumnae Asso- ciation, Mrs. Ham anti I have recently been admitted respectively alumna and alumnus of your college—the latter honor a rare and beautiful vindication of free enterprise at birth! We have found, as you will find, that alumnahood from Mount Holyoke is a joy that does not diminish with time. What the source of that joy is difficult to calculate, except by those who have lived a space of years within the family circle and have partaken of its spirit. But in varying degree it derives from a long and distinguished tradition tracing back to our founder, from the inspiration of great men and w om- en who have entered into its being, from the endless variety and dedication of its faculty, from the beauty of its place, and significantly from the continued loyalty of its students and their capacity to enjoy life—five days shall they labor anti upon the sixth and seventh like John drive furiously to the north ami to the south. It is a joy that defies analysis, hut you know and I know that it exists. Of our Mount Holyoke, “‘Age cannot wither nor custom stale, her infinite variety.” And now we w ho have had the life giving experience of partaking with you of that spirit, and accompanying you upon some part of your journey, wish you well in its continuance. (Incidentally, you may appraise successful wedlock by the due growth in your helpmate of loyalty to Mount Holyoke College. The test, we have found, is infallible.) Vffectionately yours. 15
