As if our two big ventures weren't enough, we sponsored dances, a class party, had good material in the poster contest, and our members were prominent in Hi-Y, Y-Teens, F. H. A., Band, F. F. A., other clubs, and Choir-so we come to the close of our junior year, we think we have made our class a memory in Mount Gilead High School ..... all our thanks to our advisor, Mrs. Clouse. Emerging from our freshman yearvfull of fun, still a little green but trying to act older. We entered clubs, the Y-Teens-Hi-Y-F. F. A.,-F. H. A.,-and Choir. Our boys are either on the A or B varsity and are doing very well. We gave a wonderful home-coming dance. We had parties, but we also worked hard with a large percentage on the honor roll. We have now learned how to work together and have one of the best classes in Mount Gilead High School. Our thanks to our advisor, Mr. King. We are finally in high school, and are the best freshmen ever! To start our first year in high school out correctly we elected good class officers. We then got on the honor roll, and stayed there. We gave a Halloween party and a dance. We joined clubs, and our boys played basketball and football. We took a lot of beating from upper classmen but we are now ready to follow in their footsteps knowing that we will succeed as well or even better than they did, due to hard work and help of our advisor, Mr. Grizzell. 'IGHTH GR DE We are now in our second year of Jr. High, Our subjects are harder but we are beginning to learn what to do and how to do it. We proved this by giving successful class parties-conducting our own class meetings and by being on the honor roll. By the time we become freshmen we will feel that our class shall be ready to take on any responsibility and shall be known as an outstanding class throughout high school. We wish to express our appreciation to our advisor, Miss West. W .. ,1,,.f,. 1fj..1,: is if Cn? '71 f . " 2 'S f ff.-71' - f. ,I . . I 7. , mi X , . AV., X . I K3 Vf'f'I 1'. ' . EVE TH GRADE . . . . . We finally made it to the high school building and are now safely under Mrs. Ziegler's care. With this comes more social activities and hard work with many different teachers and subjects. We started the year out by electing good, dependable class officers. During the course of the school year we took part in the poster contest, attended the dances regularly, played junior football, were in elementary choir, and- had many parties. ln spite of all these social activities we worked hard and soon many of our names took their place on the honor roll. We realize that all of this could not have been accomplished without the guidance of our advisor, Mrs. Zieg-- ler-thanks a million! t 1. ff 5.lL"'rI az . .. , , ' ' r gf. 3 f f- ,. 'Q' - ' M-I . . We have had to work very hard to earn some money for our depleted treasury. We have sold Christmas cards, given dances, sold basketball pencils and refreshments at the games. This has helped us both financially and taught us to co-operate with one another for the good of the organization. We must give credit to our cabinet and advisor, Mrs. Rummel for their help and planning. The first of the year we gained i8 new members who received their intro- duction into Y-Teens during the formal and informal initiation. The marching band in 48-49 did its most outstanding accomplishment within the memory of the seniors. The band made their show at the half-time without the field lights. The band members wore lights on their caps as they went through various formations. The year 48-49 was the first year this has ever been attempted and it was a stupendous success. The lighted formations were an impressive sight and the band received much praise from the community. The choirs largest triumph was the operetta which was under the direc- tion of Mrs. Showers and Miss West. The operetta was a huge undertaking and a seemingly overwhelming job but under excellent supervision it was a success. ln this year we acquired a new director who had had no marching band experience. Mrs. Showers worked under quite a handicap such as new school, strange pupils and different musical setup. The year 48-49 signified some outstanding performances by both band and choir mentioned in the beforehand paragraphs. These accomplishments would not have been pos- sible but for the direction of Mrs. Showers and we believe she should be given due credit. Gilead high school entertained in honor of the Seniors and their guests Friday evening, May I4, i948 with the annual ban- quet and prom. The theme chosen for this year's decorations was "Jungle Paradise". As guests entered the gym through a silver canopy they were greeted by the faint beat of a tom-tom. A jungle barracade surrounded the gym and tropi- cal birds, animals, and cannibals were peeking over it, The rear of the gym was transformed into a hill and a six-foot waterfall, surrounded by palm trees and vines. A native hut sat beside the waterfall and a large moon shone over it. The ceiling was covered with a net of jungle moss. On the stage were two pianos, covered with silver foil, and several palm trees. The tables had centerpieces of purple iris lying on yellow doilies, name cards were attached to miniature palm trees and the nut cups resembled little giraffes standing in high grass. All table decorations helped to carry out the color scheme of green, gold, and brown. The guests were escorted to their places by the messengers who were members of the Sophomore class. The messengers' costumes were like jungle game hunters. Dinner was served by members of the Freshman class who were dressed like African natives. The mothers of the Junior class prepared the dinner. After dinner, the program was presented with David McCarty, junior class president, as toastmaster, Phil Lindner gave the "Jembo" lwelcomel and Gene Lust, "Lusaka" ithank youl. "Taboo" was given by Gene Gal- laher and "Weird Notes" was presented by the high school quartet includ- ing Marvin Downs, Gay Klingle, Milton l-loffmire, Nelson Campbell. "Tom- tom beats" was presented by D. B. Noble and "Magic Spell" by Marvin Downs. James Potts gave "Congo capers" and "Ebony and ivory", piano duet, was presented by Miss Doris Alspach and Miss Jane Shaffer. "General Wow", a skit was presented by narrator Phil Lindner and Dale l-lord, Bill La Roche, Galen l-loward, and Gay Klingel. Following the program, music for dancing was furnished by Ken Hageman and his orchestra. JUNIOR-SENl0R PROM 0F 1948 JUNGLE PARADISE The native hut, artificial hill, and six foot waterfall. The band performed at half-time and at every pep meeting, which was held before every game. The students supported the team at pep meet- ings and at games. Under Captain Dale McClarren the team had fighting spirit and showed good sportsmanship. The highlights of the season was beating Cardington and Marysville. ASHLEY Mt. Gilead football team started the season off by beating Ashley by the score 20-O. lt looked as though Mt. Gilead was going to have a good team. The team proved that it could play offensive as well as defensive football. CAREY Outclassed by Carey's experienced, veteran team, Mt. Gilead Indians lost a M-id-State League game to Carey 35-I4. DANVILLE Although the Indians outgained their opponent, the team suffered its second defeat of the season, dropping a I3-6 game to Danville. The highlight of the game was Dale McClarren's 68-yard touchdown run. CARDINGTON The largest crowd in Mt. Gilead's history attended the Mt. Gilead-Cardington game. They saw Mt. Gilead take to the air forlan I8-7 win over Cardington. Jack Lancaster threw two touchdown passes to Dale McClelland. OD A good eleven from Richwood refused to bow to our Griz- zell coached team and proceeded to hand Mt. Gilead its second Mid-State League loss by a score of I9-6. At times all the backs, McClarren, La Roche, and Lancaster showed flashes of fine running. BELLVILl.E Our homecoming was spoiled by a steam roller from Bell- ville which crushed Mt. Gilead's already trampled football team 46-6. MARYSVILLE Highlight of the season for the Mt. Gilead High School gridders was the winning of their first Mid-State League football victory in two years by a score of 26-25. The Indians who played great ball scored twice in the first period and once each in the second and fourth periods. The scoring was divided be- tween McClelland, La Roche, Meeker, and Lancaster. The line played excellent football as they stopped Marysville cold. FREDERICKTOWN The indians had a big letdown after beating Marys- ville, when they were scalped by Fredericktown by a score of 2l-O. ST. MARYS Unable to stop St. Mary's passing attack, Mt. Gilead lost by a score of 33-8. The Indians, looked as if they might win the game when they took an early lead on McClarren's first period touchdown. That ended the season with a record of 3 wins and 6 losses. VARSITY SITTING: J.
