The Mt. Gilead Grade School has an enrollment of two hundred ninety-nine pupils, one hundred thirty- seven girls and one hundred sixty-two boys. This year, in addition to a monthly chapel program pre- pared by each room, a weekly assembly program was introduced. Each room contributed a number and the programs proved to be very beneficial and entertaining. By this plan many more individual pupils are allowed to participate in the programs while all are given a chance to cooperate in creating the proper audience response to a program. The major activity this year was the presentation ot the operetta, The Blue Belt, on April ll, by grades tour, tive, and six, under the supervision of Miss Gantz. Posters and some of the costumes and properties were made in art classes under the supervision of Miss Peoples. The officers of our class are William Wood, president, Margie Ann Dye, vice-president, Louise McCarty, secretary-treasurer. For the first time, we've had the privilege of electing class officers. We elected Ruthella Gist, president, Rosemary Geyer, vice-president, and Pauline Whitaker, secretary-treasurer. The grade pupils have greatly appreciated the increase in facilities for recreation. Gravel on part of the playground has made it possible to use the swings, bars and teeters almost daily, The addition of a basketball court in the play- ground provided much fun and exercise. Even now the children are planning to have a real fifth and sixth grade basketball game for the gym floor next year. Grade school children participated in the Red-Ribbon Spelling Contest in March, the County Spelling Contest in April, and the Blue- Ribbon Arithmetic Contest in May. The final activities of the school year in which all the grades participated were the school exhibit on Monday evening, May I3, when the Parent-Teacher Association meeting was held in collaboration with a display of the pupils' work in each room, and the May Day program on Friday, May 24, under the direction of Miss Gantz and Miss Van Sickle.
