Ori! amme Xke, the Starliof'-18, present this Oritlamme to you, the Hen of Carmel. ln the unknown future the day will come which will luring to your mind nostalgic memories of your days at Carmel. You will wish to relive them in spirit. When that day comes it is our hope that you may turn to this Uriflamme and fulfill your wishes. The start' early formed a smooth eliicient group under the capahle direction of lfather lidlvert and lfditor, l.ouis Nleece. Fred Tetreault wrote the accounts of all social activities, plus the Camera and .-Xrt Clulus and the Wrestling Team. Hola Ryan covered the Senior Class History, the Mothers' Clula, Band and Cheerleaders. Sports were reported hy Hill Taarle and ,loe Ohlalley. The tiresome work of typing was performed by Seniors, Claude Brozowski and Holm Coale, aided lny juniors, Reg. Nladon, Russ Platt and Tom Wvenig. Brozowski also wrote up the Glee Cluh, while Coale covered the Nlission Clulv and Dads' Cluh. Most of the remainder of the copy was handled lay the Tfditor. The art work on these pages is the work of Hal Higdon, class of '-19. Much credit must go to Father Ifdluert. He was always on hand with ideas, always the first to arrive for a meeting and the last to leave. Staff artist, Hal Higdon, works on one of his inimitable drawings for Om- of thi- staff typists, Claude Brozowski, is caught hy rht- phqyfog, TIN' Uflffzzrzinzfi rziphcr while at work in the lihrary. Wa rch in g an on cerf Em rl an n..L.-.u , ...AL - , This year's band, for the ninth straight year, was under the able direction of Nlr. Thomas lfabish. His assistant was Mr. l.eo Henning, while lfr. Regis served in the capacity of moderator. At the tirst practice sessions the band sounded squeaky and a little otf key. The members, however, kept on with their practice, and by the time football season rolled around, Carmel had the best marching band in the city. Between the halves of the football games, the band went through its maneuvers with the precision of West Point Cadets. Drum ma-iorettes from the various girls' schools served to add color to the scene. At the elections for otiicers, the tally sheet showed the following results: Don- ald Peck, Presidentg Richard Hogan, Vice Presidentg james Hodonicky, Secre- tary, and Gerald Potzler, Treasurer. Harvey Scott took over thejob ofproperty manager, while Ronald Sauter took care of the music, Capably filling the position of l,ibrarian. .After the football season was over, the band members started practicing seri- ously for the concert season. Before the big concert, the band gave concerts at the various South Side girls' schools. The lucky ones were Aquinas, St. Thomas the Apostle, Mercy, St. Casimir, Loretto Woodlawn and Loretto Englewood. The crowning point of the Concert season was the annual Band and Glee Club concert, which was held this year at the spacious Mercy High auditorium on April 30. The proceeds of this event went to swell the Building Fund. At the concert, David Schappert and Paul Bra- zauskas played solos on the piano and tympani respectively. Donald Peck and Donald Toman played an unusual solo in a novelty number, called "Badinage for Brass." Paul Tufo and Bill Dolan presented the same thing in "XYaggery for Woodwinds." Nlaurice as moderator, the Carmelite Alumni had the most successful year in its history to date. At the first regular meeting on October. 24, which also included a pre-l.eo game pep rally, last year's oHicers were re-elected for a second term on the strength of their past record. Aiding these ofiicers in their direc- tion was an executive committee of 56, composed of representatives of all classes from '09 to '47, both of former St. Cyril's College and of the present Mt. Carmel High School. ln addition to the annual elections, three other events highlighted the alumni social calendar in the past year. The second attraction, on Alan. 27, was the Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game, at- tended by over 500 alumni, their wives and sweethearts, and featuring well- known former Carmel basketeers. After the game, won by the alumni 40-38, the gym was cleared for a dance, with the music supplied by Bob Stevens' orchestra. The third attraction was the Com- munion-Breakfast on March 7. The Mass was celebrated in the Memorial Chapel while the gym was the scene for the breakfast. The last headliner was the Banquet on May 18, with the graduating class of '48 and the jubilee class of '23 as guests of honor. Inaugurated this year was a scholarship fund to perpetuate the memory of the 60 known alumni Gold Stars of YYorld XYar II. An alumni paper, The C'!l7'77I6'fI.fC' .Ninn- Illlj, edited by Fathers lidbert and Nlalachy, served to keep the grads in- formed about the alumni association, the school, and each other's activities. Vince Mischievitz, huge Junior end, ranked as one of the finest pass-catchers in the League, and earned All-Catholic rating. Del Gander, one of the re- knowned "Touchdown Twins," earned All-Catholic, All-City and All-State rating with his explosive power and speed. jim MacGillivray, All-Catholic guard for three years, proved to be one of the roughest and toughest linemen on the squad. Dick l'illi, fine junior break- away back, should be a real star in the 1948 season. Pete Quinn, another Senior guard, after recuperating fully from a leg in-iury, became the bulwark of the Carmel line. Jim Gibbons, Junior quarter- back, made his adversaries wonder at his tricky ball- handling and passing ability. Bob Dunne, powerful Senior end, excelled on defense, and proved to be a menace to the opposing wingmen. l N G jim O'Leary, Junior half- back, had plenty of spirit and scat-back ability, which should earn him a first- string berth in '48. joe Quiring, although very light for a tackle possessed nevertheless tremendous spirit and merited many plaudits. John Pasco, Senior quarter- back, filled in competently for Gibbons on defense, and was a vicious tackler. joe Hendron, Senior center, who although he lacked size, backed up the line faithfully and earned All-Catholic plaudits. Gene Barry, big Senior line- man, who capably filled the gap at tackle, turned in some magnificent performances. Fred Piet, youthful Sopho- more back, gained experi- ence and should blossom in- to a fine back. Captain Dick Paschke, the other of the "Touchdown Twins", earned All-City rating with his broken-field artistry and speed. Miles Alton, another youth- ful sophomore back, was an individual star in the De l.a Salle game, and is counted on for future prowess. .fx-egl"'f', lndtr 1 stty 1 IC 111 Ll 1.o1lv1 1r Carmel Wallops lggles In Opener 35 21 1' L1LLl s 1o11t111g St len 1f1LlS 111 1 pr1tt11e 15111113 I K , U Q U lntlx 11 18 tl1e C1fLlI'Lkl st1r 111d l1ter1llx 1 ont 111 111 show IS l1e trossed the s1o1l l111e ee t1111es on ro111ps o 2 1 1rds Other s1o1ls resulted from 1 C 1l1 l1o11s to Xlestl11e11tf 111ss 111 the end fone, 111d Notts 111tertept1o11 of 111 lQl'l1l'lLlS 1er11l St lg111t111s pl11 ed sp1r1ted football 111 l11lf ln Cirmel 1Qs1ress11e11ess Gander Leads Caravan ln Dragon Conquest lfor the seeond suttesswe Week the C1r1x1n plaxed 111 Soldler Iweld, tl11s tlme 1.q1111Qt the SLlpp0SCLllY potent St George Dragons from Evanston Ome 12121111 we netted 1 uttorx 1913 J l Cyander agam prox ed l11mself1 form1dable HICNALC to the opposmon ln scormg 011 1 p11r of sp 1rkl1ng 25 1 1rd runs 111 the l'l11I'Ll quirter, thus LllNLl1lI19f 21 trlumph for Q 1r111el ll1e hrst Carax 111 toutl1dow11 time ln x1rt11e of 1 bL1Sf1lI1CLl LlI'lX6 of some 60 1 1rds, xxl11tl1 Llllllllll 1tLd 111tl1 XX elmer sl11rt111s1 end for tl1e t21ll1 Xl1s1l11111tlplun211s tow 1rd tht mul IH tht Bowtn lr11,w1th tl11 l11ll seLur1l1 111 l'llN !I'lNIW 1 l'lz1y1115 111 11121ss11'e Soldier lfield, C1111 111el 111111 2' its 1947 footlmll :e21s:111 ln' ' ' S .' . j 2 ' 5 ' 2 2 ' " P2 , 35-ll. Ziegler, was confronted at the first September practice by some two hundred prospective football candidates, but soon dwindled the groups down to the most promising prospects. Then began the dithcult task of teaching the candidates the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, and the intracacies of the T-formation. Eventually Coaches Jordan and Ziegler formed the squad into a line team with several outstanding aspi- rants for next year's heavyweight team. Ronnie Graf, a Junior, ineligible for heavyweight football as a transfer student, was the powerhouse of the team at the full-back spot and is a sure bet for the I-leavies next season. Dan Shannon, a Freshman, played brilliantly at the left-half post and was the most outstanding Freshman player. Ed Munnelly, '47 Cin uniformj is greeted by Fr. Malachy, moderator, at the ballroom entrance. Lffl: close-up of johnny Nlarlowc's band in action. OAJCL CLHCQ 'Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the town, not a creature was stirring, nobody, that is, except the host ofgentlemen and their lady friends who jammed the Lake Shore .-Xthletic Club's spacious main ballroom for Ht. Carmel's annual Holiday l-lop. Sport- ing their gladdest rags, the lads and lassesglidedacross the pine from 9 till 12 to the syncopated rhythm poured forth by -Iohnny Marlowe and his band. Marlowe, one of the leading maestros of Chicago and a popular favorite at Carmel, was in his usual excellent form, alternating smoothly between waltzes and faster "jump" numbers. ln sharp contrast to the cold bleak pall hanging over Chicago on that 26th of December was the warmly festive mood prevailing throughout the club. These merrymakers refused to allow their spirits to be dampened by any amount of depressing weather. Private, cozily situated tables, candlelight and cokes, a beautiful girl, and the soft strains of romantic music. The ban on corsages was altered a bit for the occasion to permit moderately priced flowers, and as a result, the room was literally blooming. The crowd, numbering close to 160 couples, included a large bloc of alumni and several members of our faculty with their wives, for example, Mr. and Mrs. Gawne, Mr. and Mrs. McBride, Nlr. and Nlrs. Dee. Bids for this y.ear's edition of the Hop were a reason- able 3E3.30, and judging by the capacity attendance, it was reasonable enough, even for the most impoverished among us. A garland of roses goes to Fr. Malachy, into whose hands the school's social activities were en trusted and his hardworking committee, Jerry Donahue, Harve Scott, john Payne, john Mohar, Pat Cullinane, Charles De Leusomme and .lim Gillen. The over-all effect of the music, the general atmos- phere and air ofgood will attributable to the Christmas season, and even the frequent snap of flash bulbs of photo enthusiasts, produced one of the most delightful affairs in Mt. Carmel's social history. R1g!1t:Sanders, O'Connor and Kratz and "date-baits" look pretty fo man in front ofthe tree. r the cam .li . Ag, 2 fn 3 4 .Ekl' XY' , ,, 9 5?
