SHIP' The ship's keel was laid in 1939 at Tampa Shipbuilding Company, Tampa, Florida for Merchant Marine service, and was Hrst named MS Surprise. Acquired prior to completion by the Navy in November 194o, she was commissioned USS Kilauea on zo March 1941. As Kilauea, she saw service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters during the early part of VVorld VVar II. Carrying vital ammunition in support of the U. S. and Allied Navies, she made ports in Scotland, England, Ireland and Algeria, On I7 March 1943, she was renamed MGUNT BAKER, and moved to the Pacific theater: Ulithi, Eniwetok and Manus Islands, continuing her lifeline support of ammunition to the Pacific forces. At the end of World VVar II, she was decommissioned and placed in the PACRFSFLT at San Diego in 'mothballs'.
