JOSEPH CONRAD Annals of the USS Mount Baker CAE-42 1967 1968 WestPac Cruise I I SHIP' The ship's keel was laid in 1939 at Tampa Shipbuilding Company, Tampa, Florida for Merchant Marine service, and was Hrst named MS Surprise. Acquired prior to completion by the Navy in November 194o, she was commissioned USS Kilauea on zo March 1941. As Kilauea, she saw service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters during the early part of VVorld VVar II. Carrying vital ammunition in support of the U. S. and Allied Navies, she made ports in Scotland, England, Ireland and Algeria, On I7 March 1943, she was renamed MGUNT BAKER, and moved to the Pacific theater: Ulithi, Eniwetok and Manus Islands, continuing her lifeline support of ammunition to the Pacific forces. At the end of World VVar II, she was decommissioned and placed in the PACRFSFLT at San Diego in 'mothballs'. We 1 AL4 soma 1:26005 3 f i For her accomplishments during this period, the Commanding Officer received the Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device. MOUNT BAKER received the U. N. Service Ribbon, the Korean Campaign Service Ribbon with 4 engagement stars and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation for her contributions to the Korean effort. Again, service to the fleet became her 'long suite' as she was awarded the American Expeditionarv medal for dutv in the Taiwan Strait's crisis of 1958-59. During the period from Korea to 196o, MOUNT B.-XKER dominated the Service Force, Pacific Battle ifihciencv Award for her class bv coping top honors in 1956, 1959 and 1960. Since 1960, MOUNT BAKER has been providing logistic support to ships of the First and Seventh Fleet. As of December 1966, she has proudlv and steadily given her services in direct support of the Vietnam crisis for zo oi' the last 26 months. For her efforts she received the Vietnam Service Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. Y. I-Ie received his B. S- egfee from Pennsylvania State University in IQ40- He entered the Navy from Scranton, Pennsylvania on I3 January 1944 and was commissioned in ILIHC 1944- I-Iis first assignment upon completion of the OHQIC'-if indoctrination course at Port Schuyler, New YQH4 was to the USS CIMARRON QAO-227 then prOV1dmg the logistic support to the Pacific P16615- In February 1946 he was released to inactive duty and returned to Scranton where he became a member of the Organized Reserve serving as Executive Officer of N. R. Surface Division 4-55 until his recall to active duty in September 1950. Erom October 1950 to October 1952 he served in MSTS Pacific as Command- ing Officer Military Department, USNS SGT MORRIS E. CRAIN and Executive Officer, Military Department, USNS General N. M. WALKER. In October 1952 he was assigned to the Naval Inspector of Ordnance Office, Archibald, Penna. as Inspection Officer and later as Executive Officer. In October 1955 he returned to sea aboard USS ACUILLA CAO-567 homeported in Barcelona, Spain, serving as First Lieutenant and, on promotion to Lieutenant Commander, as Executive Officer. During this period the ship, assigned to SIYELT, participated in the Suez Crisis. On completion of sea duty in December 1957, he was assigned as Commanding Officer of the USNRTC at NVhitestone, N. Y. and served in that capacity until june 1961. Eqmxi, 1 X U ii 1111111111-:lf l ' LCDR W. H. DeWlTT, USN EXECUTIVE OFFICER The path of preparation towards Executive Ofhcer has been both multi-patterned and complete. William H. DeWitt enlisted in the Navy at Los Angeles, Calif. in March 1947. He graduated from ET 'A' school in january 1948 and from 1948 until 1957 Mr. DeWitt vvas an electronic technician aboard various SERVPAC ships, and in AIRPAC and AIRLANT as a nuclear weapons technician. After promotion to Warrant Cfficer in 1957 he instructed at the Electronics Material School, Great Lakes, until 1959. While serving on the USS YORKTOWN QCVS-105 he vvas selected for Limited Duty Qfficer QLDOD and after promotion to Lieutenant in 1961 served as Officer in charge of ET 'B' school, Treasure Island. The Executive Officer was an adviser to Republic of Vietnam Navy from 1965-1967.
