Martha Davis Asst. Student Director Merritt Bame 19Our Friends From Afar This year’s A.F.S. students are Ulla Littann, Paco Cuellar, and Noa Nomura. Ulla is staying at the home of Merritt Bame’s, Paco at David Hotvet’s and Nao with Dr. Ryerson American Field Service is an organization which allows qualified students to live for a year or three months in a foreign country. It has been a real enjoyment to have Paco, Nao, Ulla at our school. Sharing ideas is an essential for world peace. First I want to thank everyone here in Mound for everything you have done for me. friends teachers and especially the Hotvets, whom are wonderful people. Since I applied for the A.F.S. program, my hope of coming to the U.S.A. was becoming real. The main news came when I got a letter which brought me the award for winning a year here in Mound. I so much enjoy school and my friends and especially wrestling. I will be sorry when I have to leave. 20In Germany people think a lot about the United States, but we can never get a right picture of you when we do not live with you. During the time I have stayed in Mound I learned so many new things about you, about the way you live and your habits. I got to know you as individuals and not generalized. I think this is one of the best experiences somebody can have in a different country. I met so many people this year as never before in my life. Everybody was so kind and friendly to me. You all made my year in the United States really worthwhile and pleasant. ULLA LITTAN When I came to school on the 28th of August, I was so excited and worried. "Hi! Where do you come from?" "Pardon me? . . . Japan." "What is your name?" "Nao" "NOW!!???????" I enjoy school more every day. I learned many wonderful things and also some bad things. These are very good experience for me. I like school, lakes and people here very much. Even if I forget how to speak English, I’ll never forget this school life and friends. NAO NOMURA 21Sadie Hawkins Welcome to Dogpatch, U.S.A. This year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance was held on Nov. 22, preced-edby such activities as, “Dress-Alike Day," “Don't Talk to Boy’s Day,” “Blue Jeans Day." The band was The Batch, and the dance included a pickle-eating contest and Dave Orn as Marryin' Sam. 23The Donny Starson Show This year’s Talent Show, sponsored by the choir, was put on February 22 and February 26. Emceeing the show was Doug Stevenson. Most of the talent show participants this year were choir students, beginning and ending with the Pop Singers. Along with the vocal acts was Mary Frendel’s Dance and the highlights of the show “A terrible Horrible Awful Very Bad Day," by Amy Overson. and "That’s the Truth" by Sue Oberg. They spent many hours in and after school planning and putting this book together. It takes a lot of hard work and responsibility. but it is well worth the effort. The newspaper has reported on the issues and activities involving the students of our school. The editors and staff of the Smoke Signal worked hard throughout the year to publish the paper on a monthly schedule. In the fall the staff attended two journalism workshops sponsored by the University of Minn, and Minneapolis Tribune. At the workshops the Smoke Signal was analyzed by the staff of the Tribune and they gave their suggestions on how to improve the content and appearance of the paper. One change has been made in the format this year by printing a drawing or illustration on the cover of each issue to make design of the paper more interesting. 67ABOVE: GERMAN CLUB: Z. Holloway. B. One of the biggest highlights of the season came when our Mohawk round-bailers defeated a fifth rated Cooper team, which led the Lake red division. Two of our players, John Luse and John Grundmier, were placed on the All-Conference team. This year’s leadership was exceptional with tri-captains: John Luse, Lee Erickson, and John Grundmier, and Coaches John Blomlie, Grant Trygstad, and Larry Exel. Juniors, Jerry Gibbs, and Terry Seaman also came through and led the team to victory when the seniors had an off night. One more thing that must be said is that without the spirit of togetherness of the team, cheerleaders, and fans, we could never have made it happen. The girls compete in four events: Floor Exercise, Vaulting, Bars, and Beam. The top three scores in each event are used in totaling of the team scores in each event. So far the girls are 2-2 over-all and 2-1 in the Lake Conference. The girls are not all work and no play. The gymnastic overnight party will never be forgotten. This year the girls were invited to an invitational held at Lester Prairie High School. The girls competed against five schools. Mound came home with two trophies. One for B Squad and one for A Squad. With a theme song of "I Am Woman” and two coaches like ours, how can we go wrong. MEMBERS: Patti Simmons. capt.. Missy Thorne, capt., Monica Phillips.
